Yes we can! 14 medals in Cycling, 14 medals in Athletics, 10 medals in Swimming, 8 medals in Boxing, 7 medals in Rowing, 7 medals in Sailing are the main ones. London 2012, Jubilee Year, time for team GB to prove we're the greatest sporting nation on God's Green Earth. Here is the prediction breakdown compared to the UK Sport target:
ARCHERY: two medals (two bronze - UK Sport target: 0-1 medals)

Well, we comfortably exceeded expectations last time out.
It is probably a bit ambitious to aim at 95, but 70+ is definitely possible.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves, folks. Whilst I would be delighted if it happened, I personally don't like to make grand predictions about what we're going to win.
Such predictions have a habit of falling flat on their faces leaving those who predicted such things looking foolish, whilst feeling let down and disappointed.
Let's just enjoy the competition and celebrate every medal if / as it happens, The medal table will look after itself.

Way too optimistic. However I do enjoy the speculation and expect a 'home games' to give us a mini-bonanza but not to that extent. Also don't forget the cycling programme has changed and now only one rider per event.
Something like the following IMO seems possible:
Cycling 7
Athletics 10
Swimming (incl Open Water) 6
Boxing 5
Rowing 6
Sailing 6
Something like 60 taking all sports into consideration.

I think we could get 70 with perhaps 22 Gold. I think any improvement on last time will be very good.

It must be said that 95 is very optimistic - I guess the BBC experts counted a bronze to everybody who at least had some chance. However, we should beat Beijing which would be fantastic!

That article was selected by BBC experts, after individually going through each sport. But it is obviously highly unlikely that all 'bronze candidates' will pull through - indeed, a couple of half-chances in Badminton, Judo and Archery have already slipped away.

Weird! I never knew that.
Anyway, back on topic, I think 95 is very optimistic, having seen a few of our medal prospects fall short. If we can finish in the top 5 in the medal table, with a total haul in the region of 60-70, I'll say we've had a successful Olympics.

Well we won 47 medals at Beijing. 60+ would be lovely but UK sport have set the target of 48. And on Day 3 today, we won medal number 3, a bronze at the men's team gymnastics, stunning performance. The medals will soon flow in for Rowing, Sailing, Cycling and Boxing.

Atlanta.
The USA cheat games. They were leading after the dessage and the show jumping and cross country were so easy it was impossible to make the time up.
For the boxing if anyone is going cheer every punch, it effects the judges.

Only 91 to go then
Seriously hasn't been a great first few days towards the (rather more rational) target of 50-60. On the plus side the early medals are mostly for swimming, shooting and judo , which are not Britain's strong suit...it will get better. Though I fear swimming may be well down on "quota" , and the minor sports don't seem to have benefited much from home advantage so far.
Sort of wish you hadn't started this thread , even as a joke ...seems to be tempting fate...

I think it's interesting about the 'home advantage'. Much has been made of it so far, but to be honest I'm not sure it is an advantage at all, the pressure heaped on the athletes this year is far more than in Beijing.
We seem to expect medals this time around, last time we were happy with every medal we won.

Re: The Official *Team GB to 95 Medals* Thread
Its easy to forget that Beijings haul was well above expectation and a big step up.
Despite all the extra resources chucked at this games so far its not looking GB will greatly out do that. One good bronze for the gymnasts doesnt make up for a lot of medals in the pool events we had expected to challenge in gone begging. Even some of the bankers like the sailing chap are off the pace. Judo has just been a complete car crash. Of course its unrealistic to expect every medal prospect to get one, but there does seem to be more disappointments than successes so far, even Addlingtons bronze came in an event she took gold in at Beijing. The eventing team turned a world gold into olympic silver, its not the best they can do.

Duty - I reckon you should line out or highlight in red those sports where we have no more medal chances.
That way we can see what we have left..
So Judo, Fencing, Archery, Badminton, Shooting...so 7 Medals down for the BBC target!!
Lol at the BBC...idiots, if ever you need to see how the media blows expectations way above board then this is the perfect example.

Re: The Official *Team GB to 95 Medals* Thread
It's possible that we could win a medal in everything we can compete in but the chances are that we wont so whats the point in even saying it...
Just do an article with a sense of balance and realism. I know everyone was excited because it was in London and athletes would be in front of a home crowd but some of the projections and predictions I have heard are ridiculous, including this one.
The problem is that the BBC have been talking up people at every second...as soon as some one is in the final they are banging the drum that they have a decent chance and could maybe surprise and medal. When really they should be saying what a fantastic job they have done for making the final etc etc.
Realistically I didnt think we would get a medal of any kind in Judo, Fencing, Archery, Badminton or shooting.
I think so far 4 is probably what we should of expected. Possibly we could have picked up a couple more in David Florence & Cavendish...but given the fact Cavendish did 19 stages of the tour de france I felt even that was more of a case of a hope medal.
Swimming has probably been the big dissapointment so far but again things need to be put in perspective...we out performed ourselves 4 years ago and as a result raised expectations perhaps a little higher than normal.
Whilst alot of our swimmers have looked very good in European meets and the Commonwealth games it's a whole different ball game once the Americans, Chinese etc are thrown into the mix. On form I think most of swimmers have done what was expected of themselves and should feel proud. Now we have to push it on and continue building because the sport has come on leaps and bounds in the last 6 years.
I think anything between 40-50 medals would be good and would be a result we should be proud of.

Has anyone's enjoyment of the Games so far really been reduced by the fact that GBR aren't winning medals in every event?
Can't say as it bothers me any in fact I probably prefer it without wall to wall celebration of Joe Bloggs' Bronze in the individual pogo sticking on horseback.
Having said that some dude has just set a British record in the pool.

The official target for Team GB at London 2012 set by UK Sport is 48 medals, one more than Beijing. Personally, I think's that unambitious. 60+ should be our target.

Re: The Official *Team GB to 95 Medals* Thread
I think one of the pundits on the swimming said that in terms of finalists at the swimming, after 3 days of the meet they had double or something what they had in the whole meet in Athens (maybe it was Sydney). I know it's a bit disappointing that so and so only finished 6th in a final, but I think people also have to remember what they've finished 6th in.
I think in terms of each Olympics and with their obviously being slight rises and falls, there's a group of about 6 countries we should be trying to measure up against (France, Italy, Germany, Japan, Korea, Australia) and though they'll be vagaries in the sports that each does better, those are the group of countries we should at least finish around on the medal table IMO.

To be fair, The Times and Infostrada 'scientifically' worked out a prediction for every event and put it into a medal table.
They predict we'll win 19 golds and 64 medals in all, but at this stage of the event, they have us down having only got 5 medals, so 4 isn't a disaster.
That said, they reckoned we should have 2 golds by now (Adlington - in an event she was never favourite, and the eventing team, who got silver).

Yeh thats the one I remember seeing and thinking...ah now there is a more realistic outlook.
Im very happy with what we have done so far. The Gymnastics teams have been a credit to the country as have the girls football team. Adlington showed her battling spirit in a race, as you mentioned, she wasn't favourite for and which she hadn't showed a lot of form in.
The lads in the diving put up a good fight...and that really is a sport where one tiny tiny error is huge so dont think it is fair to be harsh on them.
Then we have the eventing team and armistead picking up silvers. Great job by all and in the eventing we were close to medaling individually.
Lots more opportunities to come and so far I think everyone has done a great job. Proud to say im british and will continue to enjoy what has so far been an absolute fantasic Olympic Games!!

The original article with what's happened so far, and what's left (My edits in red)
So overally, 95 would seem out of the question. But still a chance of 60+, with many of the more solid opportunites still to come.

Both trios were knocked out. Godfrey still in, so it will be 1 at most and with the Koreans looming that will be very difficult
ATHLETICS: 14 medals (three gold, two silver, nine bronze - UK Sport: 5-8 medals)
Athletics hasn't started yet, but Paula Radcliffe, considered an outside bet in the article, has withdrawn
BADMINTON: one medal (bronze - UK Sport: 0-1 medals)
All of our Badminton players have been eliminated
BASKETBALL: one medal (bronze - UK Sport: no medals)
A very ambitious prediction but we've only played 2 matches so far
BOXING: eight medals (three gold, three silver, two bronze - UK Sport: 3-5 medals)
Early days but good results so far
CANOEING: four medals (one gold, two silver, one bronze - UK Sport: 3-4 medals)
One chance has gone a begging. Others still intact.
CYCLING: 14 medals (six gold, three silver, five bronze - UK Sport: 6-10 medals)
Cavendish has missed out, but still plenty of cycling medals available.
EQUESTRIAN: six medals (two gold, one silver, three bronze - UK Sport: 3-4 medals)
The Eventing results will be a tad disappointing. Gold was a strong possibility for the team and it would have been hoped that at least one of the five could medal individually
FENCING: one medal (bronze - UK Sport: 0-1 medals)
Kruse lost
FOOTBALL: one medal (bronze - UK Sport: no target as unfunded)
Things are looking pretty good at the moment but early days
GYMNASTICS: four medals (one gold, one silver, two bronze - UK Sport: 1-2 medals)
Bold prediction of bronze for the men's team proved correct, but Purvis isn't in his final. Tweddle and Smith should still medal.
HOCKEY: two medals (one gold, one bronze - UK Sport: 1-2 medals)
Early days
JUDO: two medals (two bronze - UK Sport: 0-1 medals)
A disaster so far. We won't get a medal with all the strongest hopes already having had their opportunities
MODERN PENTATHLON: two medals (one silver, one bronze - UK Sport: 1-2 medals)
Yet to come...
ROWING: seven medals (two gold, three silver, two bronze - UK Sport: 6 medals)
Seven perhaps a little on the pessimistic side. We should sail past that!
SAILING: seven medals (two gold, three silver, two bronze - UK Sport: 3-5 medals)
Early days but Ainslie might have to settle for silver
SHOOTING: one medal (one silver - UK Sport: 0-1 medals)
Double trap still to follow...
SWIMMING: 10 medals (four gold, two silver, four bronze - UK Sport: 5-7 medals)
10? You must be having a laugh. 5 would be great right now. The BBC expert picked Gandy for gold in an event where she didn't even make the final
TAEKWONDO: three medals (one gold, one silver, one bronze - UK Sport: 1-3 medals)
Hasn't started yet
TENNIS: two medals (one silver, one bronze - UK Sport: 0-2 medals)
Murray will medal if everything goes to plan. Doubles very difficult to predict, with a lot of pairs that wouldn't normally play the doubles featuring
TRIATHLON: three medals (one gold, one silver, one bronze - UK Sport: 1-2 medals)
Not yet happened
Yes we can!
So overally, 95 would seem out of the question. But still a chance of 60+, with many of the more solid opportunites still to come.

So only 56 more to get, Shelsey.
That was a very fine forensic assessment of our prospects, but as a wise old general once commented: "No plan ever survives first contact with the enemy".
Of course, predictions are made on the basis of form book analysis, but there are too many "human" variables in the mix at an Olympic Games. Who would have seen Christensen beating Ben Ainslie in the first four races of the Finn class..? But reports from Denmark indicate that he is very highly motivated by the thought that if somebody doesn't stop Ainslie, then he Ainsley) would become the greatest medal winner in Olympic sailing history, replacing his (Christensen's) hero Paul Elvstrom. That is a factor that I bet nobody included in their medal calculations.
I cite that as an example of the "human factor". People have all sorts of motivations for wanting to win and some individuals can come from relative or even absolute obscurity to produce results nobody thought them capable of.
I don't like predictions in sport. I'm not good at them. If I was, I'd get an account with Paddy Power and make a fortune then retire to a life of indolent luxury. But I'm not, and it would seem that very few people are.
So I tend to treat medal predictions with distrust. They're usually compiled by people with as much gambling credibility as me.
And I'd never put money on that.

60 would have been a good target with 50 as the minimum.
The sport I've been following most closely is swimming. Several disappointments but most have either swam to their best or in a few cases exceeded it.
Mens 200m breastroke has been a revelation with two realistic medal chances. Goddard, Adlington, womens medlay relay and Payne still to come. 5 - 6 medals should still be possible.
