The All-new Weak Era
First topic message reminder :
With Transitional #1 Roger Federer due to sit atop the rankings on his 31st birthday, what argument is left to be made against the irrefutable proposition that this is a pitifully weak era for Mens Tennis?
It was bad enough in the mid-noughties when Swiss Shanky, aka the Basel Bungler, sat atop the tree as a young man but for the same player to now have "World #1" stamped on his pension book is laughable. It's little wonder that Ivan Ljubicic landed his only Masters title just a couple of years ago (then promptly retired!), and that David Ferrer and Mardy Fish continue to wow them in the later stages of Slams. Even Andy Roddick, making his farewell wave to the Wimbledon crowd, is yet to be passed by any but one of the youngest generation.
With Team Nemesis membership now as healthy as a bankers fan club what next for the game? I hear that Pete Sampras has been using the Legends tour as a tuning up exercise for his long-awaited return. The incentive to seize back his #1 records makes that cast-iron certainty.

Don't forget "seismic shocks" that used to follow "chilling warnings".

Re: The All-new Weak Era
At Wimbledon...Nadal received a seismic shock and Dr Ivo got 11 chilling warnings.
The problem for the era-specialists is that Federer has kind of knocked the previous era arguments into a cocked hat because his slams are won across a wide period. That said, I'm sure some people still subscribe to the 2004-7 weak era theory where "he only had to play Luber, Blake, Roddick" blah, blah...

True enough lydian (or should that be "irrefutable" ...? !!! )
And perhaps the greatest irony of all ..... it was in fact after the mythical weak era (2004-07) had ended that he then went on to become only the third player in history to compile a Career Slam. Since matched by Rafa of course.
