Pro 12 Season Preview: Scarlets
First topic message reminder :
Pro 12 Season Preview: Scarlets
The Llanelli based and West Wales region had yet another year of highs and lows for the duration of 2011/12 season. Great away wins in their Heineken Cup campaign against Northampton Saints and Castres, progressing to the quarter finals in the Amlin, progressing to the semi-finals in the LV Cup were all steps in the right direction and improvement on previous seasons, proof that Nigel Davies’ plan for progression was working. The one slight glitch was yet again finishing 5th in the RaboDirect Pro 12, agonisingly short yet again of a play-off spot. And when you look back at some of the results, the draw at home against Munster being a standout, then the Scarlets in the league at least, look to have underachieved.
The summer has been an interesting time for the Scarlets, with the quiet murmur of new signings (Kristian Phillips and Gareth Owens moving over from the Ospreys, George Earle heading to the land of the Sospan from South Africa, Tomás Vallejos moving from Harlequins) being overshadowed by the news of Nigel Davies’ departure. The man who had given 28 years, as a player then as a coach, to the West Wales side, announced his shock departure to Gloucester. Up steps Scarlets legend Simon Easterby to take the reins.
Easterby has already had two seasons of being the Scarlets’ defence coach (and in his second year making huge improvements), he’s a past Scarlets captain and a hugely respected individual in the Scarlets set up. But does he have what it takes to make the step up as head coach? Press conferences show him in a favourable light, but nervous times are ahead as the Scarlets, who should have been viewing this as the year they finally delivered some silverware, might yet again be forced into viewing this as another building season.
The departures of old heads such as Stephen Jones and Sean Lamont to new clubs and of Iestyn and Rhys Thomas to injury forced retirement could have a bigger impact than many even suspect. The Scarlets, much vaunted for their belief in giving younger players a chance, may have inadvertently gone too far in the wrong direction. They are left in the backs with their oldest player being a mere 27 years of age in Morgan Stoddart. They have lost 3 of their locks and only so far recruited two replacements (one of which the Argentinian Vallejos will miss a large chunk of the season due to international obligations). They are still to recruit a replacement prop – for either side of the scrum. They have lost Stephen Jones, and have limited back up at 10 for when Rhys Priestland will inevitably be away in the Wales camp.
It is facts like that that can send a slight shiver of unease through even the most ardent of Scarlets fan, yet there are glimmers of hope too. A second row pairing of Earle and Timani has the potential to be the boiler house workforce the Scarlets have been missing. Wise recruitment in the backs can now ensure squad cover for when Gatland comes calling. And the academy, as ever, is set again for another season of producing start. The under 20’s front row of Rob Evans, Kirby Myhill and Samson Lee will be pushing for game time. Flanker Dan Thomas, such a highlight of the Junior Rugby World Cup that saw Wales dish out New Zealand’s first ever defeat in the competition, will be eager to impress. The LV cup is likely where these youngsters will get their chance to shine, but it’s their energy, commitment, drive and competition for places that can really help spur on this young Scarlets squad. Add to that the recruitment of a new forwards coach, Danny Wilson, who is fresh from taking the Wales U20’s side to their best ever Junior Rugby World Cup result by finishing 3rd then there is a lot for the Scarlets to be positive about.
The fixtures for next season were announced just today. Scarlets have Leinster, current Heineken champions, first up, at home. They can face no sterner test. As tends to happen in the Pro 12 it will be unlikely that either side will be able to field their star players (the likes of North, Prietland and Davies will have to wait to re-prove their worth) but it will be a chance for those quality players within the squad to really show how much they want that Scarlets shirt for their own. In the Pro 12 it is the strength of your squad that will see you through to the play offs. Leinster have long mastered this aspect, the Scarlets have long been falling just short. Can this be the season they put it right?
In the first month of the new season, three of their matches will be against teams that did what they could not last season and made it to the playoffs. Leinster, Glasgow and the Opsreys. Add in there an away trip to Connacht which the Scarlets can never seem to win and it’s one of the toughest beginnings to a season the Scarlets, or indeed any side, could face.
Confidence, despite some points of alarm, seems to be high at the Scarlets. A new head coach, some bright new faces, and a real desire to right last season’s wrongs would indicate that this is a group of young, determined men set out to do nothing but win. And no one can deny the talent they have. Time and again they’ve come close to beating the top sides and fallen just short. This season is the one where they must progress. This season they have to finally learn how to close out tight matches. Fail to do that, and I for one see yet another season of being the almost team, the team that’s just short, the team that’s always second best.
Make no doubt of it, reaching the Pro-12 play-offs has to be their aim, and they are definitely a side that is capable. Whether or not they can learn from previous season’s mistakes? I for one think they will, but one thing’s for sure, it’s going to be one hell of a season finding out.
My players to watch: Rhodri Jones, Ken Owens, Liam Williams, George Earle, Rob McCusker.

Re: Pro 12 Season Preview: Scarlets
So the Top 14 starts next week, then the Celtic League 2-3 weeks later, can we assume Scarlets will not be doing any more recruitment? From what I read they struggled physically against Narbonne. Consdiering all the French teams being big up front and Scarlets fielding U20 players in the front row, it was a decent result. Perhaps Scarlets could still really do with at TH. I know Lee, Evans and Myhill are young but they will be expected to make the step-up now. They're big and strong enough they just need the chance to show it.

Danny Wilson and the Scarlets management. Unless decent front rowers are going to magically appear? If Wilson can improve Scarlets set-piece I think he has a big future in Welsh rugby.

But the scarlets management and wilson have said they r goin to sign a th. They also have r jones, p john, manu, edwards, phillips, rees and owens. Theres also a rumour we may sign 2 props.
I dont think (or hope) theres an expectation among the management that lee, myhill and evans are suddenly our best front rowers and ready for top level senior rugby just becoz they had a good jwc

The season is almost upon us and there are no new signings though, you're certain there are still signings to be made? R.Jones and your Hookers are about the only decent front rowers.

Re: Pro 12 Season Preview: Scarlets
To be honest that was not the best of results, but to be fair it does sound like a little ring rust, which the pre-season matches are about. We have a few more players left to return to the side (and a few new names to add hoepfully), so hopefully with nearer a full strength side against London Welsh we can turn things around.
(p.s. Just thought I will stop liking London Welsh if they make us have to wear our away shirt).

I'll dislike anything to do with any game where we have to wear our away shirt!
Apparently the Worcester game was awful, from the delayed start due to the Scarlets team being stuck in traffic, to poor handling, including a terrible 1st half. According to some, there were some fans who were tempted to walk out at half time - which says something considering it was an away friendly. Sounds like more than rustiness.
But we should improve though, and hopefully should be reinforced by new signings before the season starts (even if they don't play in the 1st few games).

Priest - just remember how bad we were at the start of last season, we were not dropping balls, we were flat out failing to get our hands in a position where we could catch them. Have faith.

True true, and last year we were awful (handling skills wise) Nov because of the absence of our internationals. I think we should see more in the LW friendly as we will have had more time with the side. I think it's a shame we couldn't have gotten our forward signings done early so Darren could have had a full preseason to 'beast' them and work on their technique.
But we'll see in the Leinster game how they look (though I'm gutted I'm going to miss it for a bleeding family thing... )
I just thought it showed they must have played bad if some fans got so worked up in a friendly.

12 Adam Warren
11 Andy Fenby

Scarlets Head Coach, Simon Easterby said: "This is a very important game for us in our preparation for Leinster a week Saturday, pushing on from what we have done in our pre-season phase and now moving into the final elements of building our performance. We're looking at more continuity in our selection and so there won't be as many changes on the field early on as we've seen in previous weeks.
"It's the first time some of our new players will have got a home run out in Scarlets colours including second row George Earle and I'm sure they'll get a very warm reception from our home supporters.
"As well as being a key game in our build-up the new season kick-off for our rugby group, it should be a great afternoon out for our supporters with the added colour, spice and tradition of playing London Welsh here in Llanelli and the boys are all eager and looking forward to the contest."

I like the look of that backline, even with it being shorn of it's internationals, and there's Owen, Dale Ford & Stoddart to return from injury.
Be interesting to see how Kelly goes, but the back has a very much 2nd string look to it (P John, Kelly, Edwards) but we've got plenty of options on the bench, and nice to see Pugh back.
Who is Craig Price, is he a flanker?

rumours of Henson injured with a broken cheek bone and gone to hospital. Not sure as I'm not at the match but if anybody's got any info let me know...
If it is true then it's harsh for Henson, and may well end his career

apparently it was a suspected fractured cheek bone and he went straight off to get an xray when he left the pitch. Think he picked up the injury in the first 5 mins, he certainly didn't look too happy for the half hour he was on the pitch. Unlucky for him if it turns out he has damaged it.

Kelly seemed to be decent enough, probably not any worse than Day or Welch, and IMO he put in a better display than Earle.
The match was not the best, London Welsh seemed to want to feild their whole squad, and James Jones, well I don't really have to say anything, he was James Jones. The good thing was how well we scored our final try. London welsh just thumped the ball down to our posts from their 22, and we countered. It went through about four or five hands, Maule juggled it, and stayed in feild, and then it was finished off nicely. we certainly hhave plenty of skill in our backline, and more strength to be added when players return (Foxy, Priestland etc).

cheers SS - was hoping Earle would start off really well and show up as much better than what we had, but according to what I heard he's just average (which I'd feared).
Can only hope he improves through the season ala Rhys Thomas
