Enzo Calzaghe offers to coach dethroned Amir Khan
World champion boxing coach Enzo Calzaghe has offered former WBA light-welterweight champion Amir Khan the chance to rebuild his career with him.
Khan, 25, insists he will not retire after being stopped in the fourth round by unbeaten WBC champion Danny Garcia in Las Vegas on Sunday.
But he may look to work with another trainer because current coach Freddie Roach cannot commit totally to him.
"My next goal is to talk to Amir Khan and his team," said Calzaghe.
"We spoke before, about three years ago. I have always believed Amir is a great fighter, despite what people think.
"I would love to train the kid."
The 63-year-old, one-time coach of former super-middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe, had his training licence reinstated in June after his old one lapsed following son Joe's retirement in 2009.
Calzaghe, who took a break from boxing when Calzaghe Jr retired, has been in the corner for 33 world title fights for Calzaghe, former WBO cruiserweight champion Enzo Maccarinelli and former WBA light-welterweight titleholder Gavin Rees.
He currently has no top fighter in his south Wales stable but Calzaghe is keen to talk with 2004 Olympic silver medallist Khan, who has been trained by Roach in the United States since 2008.
The Bolton boxer, who thinks he will be back in action with another light-welterweight fight in December, has stated things must change in his preparation for bouts following successive defeats to Lamont Peterson and now Garcia.
Los Angeles-based Roach has led Khan to two world titles but the world famous coach also looks after welterweight superstar Manny Pacquiao.
While Khan is keen to remain with his current mentor, he feels he needs guarantees.
"I need a trainer with me 100%," said Khan.
"Freddie is a very busy guy and he is busy because he is a great trainer and is one of the best and biggest names out there.
"I don't really want to be sharing.
"When I'm not there I don't mind what Freddie does, but [in camp] I just need someone who is going to be with me constantly and working hard with me."

What can he offer Khan?
Why are people like Froch and Enzo so publically disregarding Roach?

Roach must have taught Khan to keep his right hand low and catch left hooks with his neck, that is all it can be.

Khan would also need to hire a translater if he does team up with Enzo.

I read that as Maccarinelli rather than Calzaghe.
Would be pretty redundant - Khan already has Maccarinelli's special skill down to a T.

I think a change of trainer would benefit Khan a hell of a lot.
My top choice would be Emmanuel Steward but if Enzo comes calling, he has a proven track record and has done/is doing a great job with Joe Calzaghe and Gavin Rees.
I think Khan needs to step off his bloody Amatuer crap, keep his guard high and use his boxing skills and not his heart.
If he chose to do that, he could be great. I hope when he moves to WW that his chin holds a little more.
A trainer that gives him 100% as opposed to a mixed bag of fighters (some absolute World class) with Roach is a bad situation for him.
A switch at this point could literally make or break his career.

If his problem is that he has to share trainers then hes going to be hard pressed to find a top level trainer that will be able to focus on him solely.
Maybe Brother Naz now that Mosley has retired?

Good point Manos, top trainers usually train more than one superstar, Khan has to realise that both Pac and Chavez are way bigger stars and so take priority. It's going to be interesting to see what choices he makes because it's make or break time, a new trainer could be a good thing but as Union says i'm sure freddy doesn't teach him to keep his right hand low, a more defensive trainer could balance him a bit but i believe his problem is more his chin than having no defense at all, being more defensive would obviously change the amount of offence and could heap even more pressure from his opponent, he definately has a problem with the punches he doesn't see coming.

I forgot to add Enzo is not the right choice and would be the beggining of the end for him, if it's not already.

Irrespective of who his trainer is, if the guy can't/won't stick to a gameplan, he's done and dusted
