Task 3 - Team sodhat
You are all part of a marketing company who have been selected by the FA.
Your job is a simple one - promote women's football.
I want you to put together a campaign to increase the profile of women's football in the UK. I want you to get more women playing the game, more people watching the women's league and more companies wanting to put their money into improving the game. You can use whatever marketing tools and approaches you deem effective and appropriate, and the winner will be the one which myself and my team of advisors will best deliver this aim.

Hey team. Been out all day playing cricket. "Women's football, don't mean to be sexist but who gives one" should be our slogan

Right what are we going to do? Promote women's football. We need to aim at a demographic. I am thinking Lesbians and Men. And by that I mean an advert with the hottest women's football players in a hot tub in bikinis

Alright seriously, I think to promote it we should get some of them into FHM or Nuts.

Re: Task 3 - Team sodhat
I agree that we should be looking at places like FHM and Nuts
I don't mean to be sexist (but I'm probably going to be anyway) but it can't compete with mens football on an aesthetic level so we should be looking at other ways to get an audience interested...
- A regular column by a particularly attractive player in one of the smutty mags might be a good start.
- Various photo shoots etc.
- Getting a regular highlights slot on one of the sports channels or better still on something like C4 or 5 so there is a bit of exposure of the actual game.
- Free ticket giveaways in smutty mags
- Having games before mens matches for sides that have ladies teams and having it as part of the matchday package for ticket holders. (as Team GB did on Friday)
Any other ideas of getting it out there?

Once we have a few ideas I can allocate them out to each person to write up and develop and we can present our plan. We'll need about 8 good ideas overall, then we can each take 2 to write up and develop I reckon.

Re: Task 3 - Team sodhat
Alright mate. I'll be away for a couple of days this week, but will be back Thurs/Fri.
I reckon using magazines is the wrong way to go about it in all seriousness, I think it would be seen as demeaning.
I think getting highlights packages on a major channel would be a starter, but a biggie is getting it on the news, alongside the other sports like footie, rugby, cricket etc. I don't know how much tickets are, but that should be looked at.

Re: Task 3 - Team sodhat
It would very definitely be seen as demeaning but I don't want to discount the approaches just yet, because the aim of the task appears to be to raise the profile of the game and it would at least be effective
I personally prefer the two ideas:
- Having games before mens matches for sides that have ladies teams and having it as part of the matchday package for ticket holders. (as Team GB did on Friday)
- Getting a regular highlights slot on one of the sports channels or better still on something like C4 or 5 so there is a bit of exposure of the actual game.
Because they raise the profile of the game and toe the non-offensive line!
I'm interested in anyones ideas though, be them offensive, demeaning or sensible. We can then pick the best ones together and develop them.

I think it would have to be on terrestrial TV for that sodhat, maybe in a daytime slot for the stay at home housewife?
Sepp Blatter suggested that they should "wear tighter shorts and low cut shirts... to create a more female aesthetic"

There appears to be a marked increase in interest through success of national sides - maybe thats something we should be looking at?
Ways to get the national side a bit more exposure too, then we can drive the club game interest.

I was going to name us Team Blatter but thought better of it.
It seems we are presented with a crossroads - go all out for exposure (demeaning or not) or play it a bit more respectfully and try and push the game itself.
Which way does the team lean?

They used to be on the BBC on occasion I believe, but not sure if they are now. I don't know whether the womens domestic game gets shown either, so that's something to correct too
I think we aim for both men and women and I do think to get at the men we need a certain level of exposure in mens magazines and media, even if it is a bit borderline

Alright, but I think if certain players want to go off and do magazines then they should do that of their own accord, not as part of the game in general.
I think you could get some advertising at games, tv etc.

Re: Task 3 - Team sodhat
It wouldn't be a mandatory thing, just a way of getting some exposure for the game
It could even be as simple as a column in a magazine, or maybe a free magazine like 'Sport' (I don't know if that is distributed outside of London, but it's a free mag given on Fridays, and it's pretty good).

There's a free magazine in Manchester called Lifestyle, I think that might be our equivalent.
Yeah I get it wouldn't be mandatory, but I think if players want to do that, then they would do so of their own accord, not part of our campaign IMO. If you disagree then go for it though

I think to get the national team more exposure have all there games at Wembley. Make tickets £5 for adults and £1 for kids, so we can fill the stadium up. That way we get more exposure rather than being scattered around the country

There we go then, try and get some sort of column written by a womens player in these types of free publications. It offers pretty good exposure I'd say, and obviously they would have to promote upcoming games, important events, and also write about being a player.

One of the things is to get more women playing football. Sooooooooooo how about offering an incentive to join a club. Like a free bottle of shampoo, or a free iron or something

More small games would be good, like setting up 5 a sides for fun maybe? Fitness market is massive so maybe some sort of footie exercise.

Re: Task 3 - Team sodhat
I think you should split it into three bits.
a) More people going out and playing.
b) Getting current footie fans to watch women's as well as mens football.
c) Getting new football (female) fans.

Your fitness idea fits perfectly here

Coverage on TV - how about a short round up show between MOTD and The Football League Show? Maybe a way of keeping people sat down while they wait for their team!
Having womens games played before the mens games where possible, with ticket holders getting the womens game free with their ticket.
c) Getting new football (female) fans.
Coverage in female publications?
Emphasis on football in young girls either at school or through FA programmes - get them early.
That is what I believe we have so far - any more before we split them up for development?

Re: Task 3 - Team sodhat
I don't think so olly, women in general don't tend to play footie games, if they play anything it's the sims
I think women are less concerned about playing for competitiveness and more for fun, so I think different types of games which are a bit of a laugh would be good. Maybe charity games in communities, I think on a smaller scale is the best way to do that.

Re: Task 3 - Team sodhat
Right, we will have to go with what we have, and so I'm dividing the ideas as follows:
Trebs - Fitness football idea. I like that one a lot and as it's yours I think it's right that you expand on it.
Olly - You're the youngest so I'm giving you the task of getting an emphasis on football in schools and after school clubs.
Nando - I want you to look at getting a show on television to round up the womens football action, as well as being a sort of 'magazine' show to discuss it all.
I'll do the womens games being played before mens and publications etc
Any other ideas you have, throw them in and bring it all back to me Sunday. If that's going to be a problem, let me know and we'll re-jig it.

Yes, just a couple of paragraphs about the idea and how you would go about implementing it, and then the benefits it would have to the womens game

Re: Task 3 - Team sodhat
- Spoiler:
- We want to get more people to go out and play the beautiful game. A way that has worked in other sports is to mix it into a workout routine. This is particularly common in other sports. For example in martial arts, where they are playing the sport in such a way which improves the body and health.
The exercises would help tone legs in the most part, which is what a lot of women want and would be a good aerobic workout. This would begin with stretches and running, mainly focussing on the leg muscles. Then it would move into more specifically football activities, where they do passing, tackling, shooting drills. Then they would end with five a side game(s), which would be fun and have a small prize for the winning team.
We would take our brand and try to get it into a large chain of health clubs, such as Virgin Active (124 UK Clubs) or Bannatyne's (61 UK Clubs) firstly on a trial basis in five or so clubs, then hopefully into all of the clubs. From the club's perspective, the only equipment that would be required would be balls and goals. We could also suggest a discount for women that book in groups of five, as in the games they can play together.

Re: Task 3 - Team sodhat
- Spoiler:
- Expanding the reach
One idea we have is to have womens matches staged on the same day as mens games on several occasions throughout the year, where teams are affiliated with clubs. While this may not be possible for all clubs – and while I don’t suggest it should be every game played either – it will hopefully grow interest and make ‘events’ out of these matches.
The womens game would kick off prior to the mens match, with an hour or so between matches. The idea would be for ticket holders and season ticket holders to get a two for one deal on match days and see both matches for their money.
These ‘bumper’ matches would be publicised throughout the club and spectators would be encouraged to come along and see both matches. Tickets for such events would be offered at discounted rates for women, and children, and hopefully drive up support and interest in the female game.
While we don’t expect full stadiums, we do expect the exposure at the very least would have a positive impact. It has been shown with Team GB that two games can be held at the same ground for the same ticket holders so logistically we are comfortable with the idea.
With larger grounds being able to host television comfortably, we believe there is some scope for these matches to be televised on Saturdays too, with traditionally a little bit of a lull in football coverage before 3pm when games are not scheduled for lunchtime kick offs.
Publicising to a wider audience
Aside from the idea above, part of the scope is to publicise the game and make people aware of it's existence. A part of this for us is the idea to utilise free magazines issued on the streets every day. In London alone there are various publications such as the Evening Standard, Sport, and the Metro that could open up a new audience and reach the wider public.
Our idea is to acquire regular space in these publications. Columns by female players is a starting point, and I can see both the Evening Standard in London (and it's equivalents in other cities), and Sport magazine being willing to allow space for such an article.
In the same space, we would be filling it with information on upcoming matches, past results, players to watch, and local events designed to get women and children playing football. With a wider audience being reached, the hope would be that interest could be driven upwards and publicitiy could be generated for our other ideas such as football for fitness, 'bumper' match days, and a TV highlights and magazine show.
Beyond this the idea would be to move into other publications, and other media forms, and with each publicising the game and pointing in the direction of other sources of information.

- Olly - You're the youngest so I'm giving you the task of getting an emphasis on football in schools and after school clubs.
What we are going to do is link up with one of the main supermarket chains, like TESCO and set up a Girls Football Foundation. It will be like the ASDA Kwik Cricket, we will go into every school in the country, with the financial backing of TESCO, and then with the help of fully qualified coaches we will try and get girls involved in football at a school level. Our ultimate aim here is to get at least one session per week with girls playing football. Our fully qualified coaches will be male or female, and will have good knowledge of the game. If we can get this implemented in every school in the country, then this should increase participation levels in women's football.
Also what we will do is set up a competition. Each county will have one team to go through to a national round. And in each county we will have a regional round, where the winner goes into the final county round. Then the winner of the county round will go into the national round, and the winner of the whole competition will get to train with the England Women's team for a week! What this will do is get multiple girls from the around the whole country playing football, and trying to enjoy it, with a little carrot at the end of the road for them.
