Week three results
- Norwich vs Tottenham:
Norwich were coming off a good point at Liverpool, and Tottenham a good win over Fulham as the two teams strode out at Carrow Road. Tottenham, the prematch favorites, started out well, with Ruddy forced to make a smart save from an Eden Hazard snapshot from the edge of the area. That seemed to wake Norwich up, and they showed plenty of endeavour in stifling their hosts, and even took a lead after half an hour after Jordan Rhodes caught Vertonghen napping to steal in for a backpass and smartly rounding Friedel to give Norwich a lead. Tottenham huffed and puffed, but couldn’t find a breakthrough, and it was Norwich that could’ve taken a 2-0 lead into halftime, as Naughton got forward to cross to an unmarked Holt at the backpost, only for Holt to plant his header wide.
Some harsh words from the Spurs manager at halftime almost paid dividends after the restart, as Bale got inbehind Norwich, only to see Modric meet him cutback with a shot into row Z. Norwich continued to stifle a Tottenham team content to build from deep, until the 70th minute, when Spurs brought on Jermaine Defoe, who made an immediate impact, drawing a foul from Bennett. Eden Hazard then stepped up to plant a beautiful strike past Ruddy in the Norwich goal. That goal seemed to take the life out of Norwich, and as they tired, Bale nipped in behind to cross for Defoe, who couldn’t miss from 6 yards out. Norwich had a great chance late to equalise, as some good footwork from Rhodes fashioned a chance on the edge of the area for Holt, but Friedel got fingertips to it to push it wide. However Spurs then went on to finish it off, as Fellaini played in Defoe on the counter, and he made no mistake with a deftly clipped finish over Ruddy.
The expert opinion (by Gary Neville)
For 70 minutes Norwich were a match for Spurs, they harried and hassled them everytime they got close to goal, and really squeezed them for space. Playing without a frontman didn’t really work for Spurs, and the introduction of Defoe really allowed them to stretch the Norwich backline. Quality told in the end for Spurs however, as their big guns took advantage of spaces left by a tiring Norwich team.
How the votes were spread:
0-0-5
Norwich 1-3 Tottenham
SCORERS
- Stoke vs Liverpool:
Both teams came into this game searching for their first win this season, so there was a sense of urgency among both sets of fans at the Brittannia. That sense of urgency didn’t extend to the players however, as both teams contrived to produce a half of little quality, with chances few and far between, the best of which came from one of the few moments of brilliance, as Nani skipped inside and forced Begovic to push a bending shot onto his own post and out.
Liverpool improved after the break, and took the lead soon after, as Montolivo fed Vargas who crossed for Carroll who thumped a header past Begovic to give Liverpool the lead. Then in turn woke Stoke up, and after Kakuta won a corner after a tricky run, Ryan Shawcross rose to head in past a helpless Pepe Reina. Stoke then closed the game down again, seeming to settle for a draw, and although Liverpool had joy getting at the fullbacks, they couldn’t fashion a clear cut chance, Gerrard coming off the bench to spurn the best chance from distance as the game petered out to a draw.
The expert opinion (by Alan Shearer)
After Man Utd took them apart here 2 weeks ago, Stoke will view this as a good result against a good Liverpool side. They stuck to the qualities that serve them well and really made it hard for Liverpool to break them down. But can they open it up against weaker sides?
Liverpool need to improve up front for me, even though he scored today, Carroll didn’t have the best game and Long struggled with the physicality of Shawcross and Huth. Stoke clogged the middle and it showed, they had success going out wide, but didn’t stick with it enough.
How the votes were spread:
1-3-0
Stoke 1-1 Liverpool
Shawcross 64; Carroll 51
- West Ham vs Newcastle:
Theo Walcott proved the hero for Newcastle today after the winger was cruicial in their 1-3 away win over a poor West Ham side, The home side got off to a great start backed by a passionate crowd but after 25 mins Ben Arfa set Cisse through on goal and the finish was of the highest quality. West Ham fought back towards half time but were kept out of it by Tim Krul. The 2nd half started in the same vein as the 1st except Newcastle started to play on the counter against a West Ham side trying to get back in the game. Eventually West Ham was caught out as a long ball by Mikel Arteta into space behind Matt Taylor set Walcott free who cooled finished past Paul Robinson for 2-0 in the 70th min, At this point the Newcastle started to dominate and could have scored more after hitting the bar twice, In the 82nd minutes Walcott got in behind again but squared it to a free Papiss Cisse. West Ham then bombed forward with nothing to lose and got a consolation goal from Pedersen in injury time
The expert opinion (by Andy Townsend)
Newcastle simply outclassed West Ham today they were best all over the pitch and Walcott vs Taylor was a mismatch to say the least, Once 2-0 up Newcastle dominated the play and could have scored several more. Cisse was in top form again scoring 2 from 3 chances
How the votes were spread:
0-0-6
West Ham 1-3 Newcastle
Pederson 90+1; Cisse 25, 82, Walcott 70
- Arsenal vs Man Utd:
Two of the season's title contenders battled this one out. Arsenal played with an attacking system, Gervinho and Podolski attacking as it was almost a 4-2-4, as they opened the scoring early on. Valencia was caught in possession by Gibbs who found Podolski, who made an excellent run down the wing before finding Giroud who side-footed home a great opener. United reacted well and created chances, Strootman winning a free kick from a M'Vila foul, and Rooney sending the ball just over the bar, and Welbeck smashing a header just over the bar from a corner when he maybe should have scored. But, just before half time United got a big chance. Smalling made an excellent run down the right and crossed the ball, Vermaelen cleared the ball but was adjusted to have done so with his hand and United had a penalty. Rooney stepped up to take it but Lloris guessed right and got a hand to it, tipping it onto the post before Sagna hacked the ball clear for a corner.
The second half started with Arsenal having all of the ball. Wilshere, who had a great game, found Van Persie who was clattered into by Vidic. The referee waved advantage and Gervinho raced clear before slotting past Lloris. Man United brought on Hernandez who caused problems with his pace, and a lovely long ball over the top from Schurrle found him who got past Kolscielny but blasted his shot wide. With ten minutes to go, United finally got back into the game. Scholes, who had been quiet, took a long range effort which was only parried by Lloris. Hernandez however was on hand to score a tap in. United were spurred on by this and won a late corner, De Gea even went forward but it was Ferdinand who won the header but it crashed against the post and Valencia missed from three yards as it ended it disappointment.
The expert opinion (by Andy Townsend)
This was a great game but Arsenal had the edge over United this time. Both sides were fairly even in the middle of the park, but Arsenal seemed more capable of making that moment of magic to win the game. They seemed to take the game to United more as Giroud impressed.
How the votes were spread:
3-3-0
Arsenal 2-1 Man Utd
Giroud 4, Gervinho 49; Hernandez 82
- West Brom vs Reading:
A Close fought game at the Hawthorns today as Reading came away with 3 points after coming from behind to snatch 3 pts at the death, West Brom's lack of prowess up front eventually cost them on the day but went ahead in the 38th minute after Dos Santos wriggled free on the wing and sent a 25 yard rocket into the top corner to send then fans into raptures, Reading started to build up the pressure from the kick off but couldn't make the break through before the end of the 1st half. Reading came out in the 2nd half like a team possessed eventually leading to a leveler in the 73rd minute after Didier Drogba scored a superb free kick. The West Brom manager was furious with the decision for the free kick and was sent to the stands by Chris Atkinson, Reading with there tails up went for the winner and duly got in the 4th minute of injury time when Angel Rangel bundled in from a corner
The expert opinion (by Guy Mowbray)
The game today was a tight affair over 90 mins, The WBA defence struggled to contain an on form Drogba whilst their lack of finishing in front of goal eventually proved costly for them.
How the votes were spread:
0-2-3
West Brom 1-2 Reading
Dos Santos 38; Drogba 73, Rangel 90+4
- Southampton vs Chelsea:
Southampton began this game in the relegation zone and needed to get something. Chelsea were hoping to continue from a strong opening to the season. From the outset Southampton's gameplan was obvious as they went very defensive. Chelsea started by getting a couple of good chances, Mata managed to get between the lines and found Higuain who beat King but shot wide. Ramires drove the ball forward and found Cole who shrugged off Gunter, crossed the ball in for Torres but the Chelsea striker headed tamely at Davis. Chelsea got more and more men forward and it was only after half an hour and Cahill took the ball out of defense and beat Lallana before striking a long range effort well wide. Southampton had a rare chance on the counter when Fonte made a crunching tackle, the Chelsea players stopped expecting a foul but the ball was played long to Malouda who ran at Terry and arrowed a powerful strike which seemed to be going into the top corner, but Courtois was equal to it and parried it away to safety.
The second half was more of the same. Ivanovic sent in a crossed which was deflected wide off Richardson. Gourcuff took the corner and found Terry who headed wide. Chelsea were getting frustrated and brought on Kalou and Marin which added more width. They improved and Marin made a fantastic run between Gunter and Fonte and smashed a powerful cross in which Davis reacted well to, punching clear. Chelsea's big moment came in injury time when Essien's energy drove him past Davis and Diarra, before passing to Kalou. He ran through and squared to Torres, who blasted home a late goal which sent the Chelsea fans into jubilation before their celebrations were cut short by a late offside flag as Southampton held on for a point.
The expert opinion (by John Motson)
Southampton parked the bus and it worked. Chelsea struggled to break them down despite having all of the ball. Southampton had one shot all game but it was their hard work in defense that sees them get a point which could be crucial later in the season.
How the votes were spread:
0-4-2
Southampton 0-0 Chelsea

- Everton vs Aston Villa:
Two teams who have started the season unbeaten played out a good game here. Everton made the stronger start and created chances. Cahill beat Bassong in the air from Enrique's cross but sent his header wide, and Landon Donavan cut inside and blasted an effort which Given superbly saved. Villa were creating chances of their own though, as Aquilani got the ball to N'Zogbia who showed his trickery as he got past Dawson but Vorm came out quickly to make the challenge. Bent then had a great chance when one on one with the keeper but Vorm saved and it went out for a corner. Weiss took an accurate corner which swung in and Dunne connected well to power in the header to give Villa the lead eight minutes before half time, and it was the last meaningful moment of the half. Everton came out in the second half more determined and right from the kick off Donavan played the ball back to Pranjic, who hit a long ball to Jelavic but Dunne got back just in time to make a crucial challenge. Everton had more of the ball as they tried to find an equaliser but Villa were defending well, particularly the full backs. Ziegler got through however and played in Jelavic, who made a clever run dropping slightly deeper and he continued his superb goal record as he pulled them back into the game. Downing and Lennon came on and their pace was a real threat as Lennon found Jelavic who beat Dunne in the air but couldn't direct his header on goal. Makoun and Weimann came on for Villa as the game became a bit disjointed in the closing stages. Aston Villa had the final chance though, and it fell to Weimann who turned past Jagielka but the defender recovered to hack the ball away to prevent what would have probably been a goal.
The expert opinion (by Emile Heskey)
This was a great game of football. Both teams were very evenly matched and Lopes and Warnock both had good games, keeping Donavan and Ziegler quiet. Both teams had similar styles of play and a draw was a fair result, both managers can go home happy.
How the votes were spread:
1-3-0
Everton 1-1 Aston Villa
Jelavic 58; Dunne 37
- Fulham vs Swansea:
This game was the pick of the bunch for the neutral this week, full of excitement. Both teams came flying out of the blocks and De Silvestri robbed Dyer of the ball and ran forward, crossing for Pogrebynak who rose higher than Williams to open the scoring. Fulham doubled their lead just four minutes later and Dempsey made a well timed run to latch onto a Sidwell through ball and hit it first time past Howard. Fulham continued to attack in the opening stages and could have ran up a cricket score. But Rodwell and Ramsey were getting into the game and dominated the centre of the park later on the half. Rodwell shackled Murphy in the middle, found Joe Cole who could have went for the shot but instead passed to Hoilett who took a touch forward and hammered home a goal back to give Swansea some hope going into the second half.
Fulham came out quickly and Riise played a neat one-two with Dembele before passing back to Murphy, but he failed to connect properly as the ball went well wide for a goal kick. Howard sent a long goal kick over the top which found Jay Rodriguez who caught Hughes napping. He used his pace to great effect to give himself time to steady himself for the shot before slotting home an equalizer. Substitute Craig Bellamy got the ball late on and ran at a tiring De Silvestri who couldn't stop him and he cut inside before playing the ball back to Britton, who was fouled inside the area, giving Swansea a late penalty. Joe Cole fancied it and went for the top right corner, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to give Swansea a late win in a crazy game.
The expert opinion (by Mark Lawrenson)
In Riise and De Silvestri Fulham have great full backs who could get down and get good crosses in to create chances for Fulham, but Swansea had Rodwell and Ramsey in the centre who seemed to dominate in the centre of the park with their younger legs, and more energy. Jay Rodriguez was a handful for the Fulham defense and had a great day today.
How the votes were spread:
2-0-4
Fulham 2-3 Swansea
Pogrebnyak 2, Dempsey 6; Hoilett 45+2, Rodriguez 66, Cole 86

Great write ups Trebs.
Obviously happy to win, particularly by 2 goals
Got a real dilemma with Walcott/Ben Arfa/Varela now
