Must see in Berlin?
Apart from the gate, the wall, the checkpoint.
What's a must see in Berlin? Also any restaurant recommendations would be gratefully received.
Danke in advance for your suggestions!

Also - the holocaust memorial and museum are well well worth a visit.
However don't make the same mistake we did and go to the JEWISH museum as it is awful (in my opinion, probs ok if you're a Jew).

Re: Must see in Berlin?
I really enjoyed the Olympiastadion.
I like visiting sports stadiums for what they are anyway but this one has something much deeper to offer. The stadium was modernised for the 2006 World Cup but they have left much of the old Nazi era relics (parade fields, bell tower, huge bell from said tower etc) on show.
If, like me, you enjoy sport stadia and war history, it's good for both and recommended if you have time.

The Reichstag tour is a must as well. Do it at night, go to the top of the Reichstag, and see Berlin at night is a must.
Also if you have a tour guide, they might take you to the place where Hitler's underground bunker was. It is under a kids playground, not many people know about it!
It's such a lovely place, we went there on a school trip last year!

The free walking tour takes you via Hitler's bunker. As Olly says it is bizarre, under a playground/car park in front of a block of flats. Basically they didn't want it becoming a shrine to the latent neo-Nazi movement therefore they basically just covered it up and tried to forget about it as much as possible.

There are loads of beer gardens as well in Berlin where you can get a nice beer and good food.

Berlin is so awesome, had a whale of a time - thanks for the suggestions.
Checked out the bunker site under a car park - probably the best thing they could have done to stop nutters glorifying the site.
Sadly Cafe Zapata is closed now and has been for a while.
Spent most of my time mooching round Prenz Lauer Berg and Kreuzberg and am thinking of going back for a bit of clubbing over New Year's!

Re: Must see in Berlin?
Went last Autumn to Berlin, don't think I have been so cold in my life whilst walking round the Tiergarten!
Great place though, such a clean pristine modern city with loads to do and see.
How I long for their local beer again, Berliner Pilsner!

Re: Must see in Berlin?
Glad you enjoyed it, Reckoner. I must admit it's a city I have a desire to visit.
Re: Must see in Berlin?
Loved Berlin! Our trip was based on a simple recipe..
Wake up, do touristy things, have dinner, have drinks at hostel or Kreuzberg, hit clubs till most people wake up, sleep till 2pm... repeat!
It was so much fun because we covered loads of touristy stuff and got lots of fresh air to freshen ourselves up and cure the hangover. No pressure to go out early because there is always somewhere to party/get a drink. We actually even saw Merkel when we did the free tour which was a bonus, very strange.

Re: Must see in Berlin?
One of the best tourist cities to visit in Europe. The bohemian spirit is strong there.
I went for the world cup and thought it was a very affordable destination. Contrasting the difference between the buildings on the east and west side of the divide was interesting to me.
The place, at that time anyway, was overrun with street walkers, fairly forthright when it comes to selling their wares. A pretty young woman walked up to me in the street in broad daylight and asked if I wanted a BJ. Hard question to answer, my mind was conflicted, I always want BJ's but I didn't want one from a hooker.

Re: Must see in Berlin?
been a while since I'd been to Europe - about 18 months now. Been to Germany twice, but never Berlin. Seems I should make arrangements to get there, from what you're all saying! Only times I've ever been drunk on only beer was in Germany! God I miss Cologne
