Norwich vs Stoke
Man Utd vs WBA
Tottenham v Swansea
Aston Villa v Fulham
Chelsea v Everton
Reading v Southampton
Newcastle v Arsenal
Liverpool v West Ham
- Spoiler:
- Norwich needed to rebound from a loss last time out, while Stoke looked to start picking up points against easier opposition. Stoke looked to surprise with a 3-4-3 formation, that initially seemed to take Norwich by surprise with Seedorf and Diaby getting good possession in midfield and distributing well for Stoke. This in turn led to the opener, coming for Stoke, as Seedorf, allowed too much time in midfield, clipped a delightful ball for a sprinting Young to finish low past Stockdale. Stoke continued to press and could’ve added a 2nd immediately after, Etherington having all kinds of time to find Kakuta 12 yards out, whose shot on the turn was deflected by Stockdale before Bennett got back to clear off the line. After dominating the half, Stoke were then pegged back against the run of play, Snodgrass free on the left, cutting inside to curl a fine strike just inside the post.
Norwich came out much better for the 2nd, taking advantage of the holes left wide by the lack of FBs, and the lack of pace throughout the spine of the Stoke team was really exposed, as Norwich went close through Rhodes and Howson early on. Norwich resisted valiantly, but with 20 minutes to go the barrier was broken, Howson feeding Burke outside, who ran at Upson before firing a right shot across Begovic and in. Stoke panicked and went with 4 up top and just 2 at the back, exposing themselves badly, Holt in particular spurning a free header that could’ve clinched it. However Norwich held on for a first win of the season.
The expert opinion (by Mark Lawrenson)
Stoke went for a surprise formation that really took Norwich by surprise and allowed them to monopolise possession. However Norwich adapted after the break and really took advantage of the holes left wide, and really should’ve made it safe long before time.
How the votes were spread:
4-2-2
Norwich 2-1 Stoke
Snodgrass, Burke - Young
Man Utd vs WBA
- Spoiler:
- West Brom were playing their first game since being taken over last week and they started with the positivity their fans will hope to see continued, as they made much of the early running at OT, Lukaku making a nuisance of himself among the Utd backline. West Brom really upped the tempo and Man Utd were really struggling to contain them, Lukaku popping up to feed Dorrans who stung De Gea’s gloves from range. De Gea was called into action again soon after, first pushing Lukaku’s drive past the post, before pushing Tamas’ header from the corner over. West Brom were made to pay for their wastefulness however, as Rooney skipped past Pienaar before shooting range at Fulop who could only parry it into the path of Welbeck who made it 1-0 to send Utd into the break ahead.
West Brom continued to press after the break, but couldn’t find a way past an inspired De Gea, who rescued his side on two more occasions, Lukaku continuing to spurn chances. Man Utd then found a way to get it done, as they have so many times over the years, Schurrle coming in off the wing to fire a low shot that deflected off Collins past a despairing Fulop. West Brom rightly felt hard done by and continued to press, but couldn’t find a way past De Gea, until 3 minutes from time when Wondolowski showed Lukaku how it’s done, coolly collecting Dorrans past and sliding a finish past De Gea. However it proved to be nothing more than a consolation, as Utd held on for the win.
The expert opinion (by Andy Townsend)
You have to commend West Brom, they came to play, and had they been clinical, they could’ve won handily. For United, they really must improve, this was a poor showing rescued by their big players. Better teams can and will punish them. Tactically must do better.
How the votes were spread:
4-3-1
Man Utd 2-1 West Brom
Welbeck, Collins - Wondolowski
Tottenham v Swansea
- Spoiler:
- We turn out here at White Hart Lane to see Spurs play Swansea. Spurs are red hot at the moment, after a good win at Norwich. Swansea after a good start are faltering a bit, however look a good side. Spurs took the lead early on through hitman Adebayor, and after that they looked in cruise control. Unfortunately for Swansea, Joe Cole is failed to get into the game due to Fellaini's good work, and because of this they offered little attacking threat. Spurs took a 2-0 lead on the stroke of halftime with that man Adebayor scoring from a Hazard cross. Swansea came out second half, and looked a little better. Jay Rodriguez scored after 63 minutes to make it interesting, however this only riled Spurs and Defoe rounded off the win in style with a 25 yard strike into the top corner.
The Expert Opinion (By Lee Dixon)
The Spurs team had a tight midfield and dominated there despite a good fight from Swansea. It was a tight game and good performances from both but Spurs have the better players and eventually their quality shone through. Cole was nullified well by Fellaini. Spurs continue there good start to the season, but Swansea can take heart from a gutsy performance.
How the votes were spread
5-2-0
Tottenham 3-1 Swansea
Defoe, Adebayor x2 - Rodriguez
Aston Villa v Fulham
- Spoiler:
- Aston Villa the draw specialists turn up at home against a very solid Fulham side. This was a game where both sides set out in similar ways, and this was further backed up by a uneventful first half where neither side looked like scoring and the game was very even. Villa started the second half stronger, and they took advantage with talismanic striker Darren Bent poaching a goal on 56 minutes. However Villa went into there shell, and Fulham played like the home side and piled on the pressure. This pressure finally told when Moussa Dembele scored with 8 minutes remaining to gain a draw for Fulham. An even results for two evenly matched sides.
The Expert's opinion (by Gary Neville)
This game was always going to be a tight game, and so it proved. Not much to choose between them, Fulham have the better attacking quality but Villa were set up defensively well and in the end a 1-1 draw was the fair result. Both teams can take heart from this game.
How the votes were spread
3-2-2
Aston Villa 1-1 Fulham
Bent - Dembele
Chelsea v Everton
- Spoiler:
- A rather wet day at Stamford Bridge for Pull to make his debut as Chelsea manager against a strong Everton side. This game looks like a good match on paper, and it turned out to be. Everton set out to play a counter attacking style and this worked well early on when Jelavic sprung the offside trap to score after 7 minutes. Everton sat back and set out a solid defensive base, and went into the break 1-0 ahead. However Chelsea came out a different side, and Torres scored after 52 minutes to make it 1-1. Lampard then struck a 30 yard thunder bolt to make it 2-1 to Chelsea on 55 minutes. Now Everton had to show what they were made of, and Chelsea went to sleep as Aaron Lennon capped off an incredible period of play by equalising on 60 minutes. However both teams couldn't find the scoresheet again, and this ended in a well deserved draw for Everton, and Chelsea will see this as 2 points dropped at home/
The Expert's Opinion (by Alan Shearer)
Chelsea could and should have got the win, the decision to play Gourcuff on the right must have left Ramires scratching his head at to what he has to do. Everton set out very well and got a well deserved draw and should be well pleased. Chelsea will have to improve if they are to mount a serious title challenge.
How the votes were spread
3-3-2
Chelsea 2-2 Everton
Lampard, Torres - Jelavic, Lennon
Reading v Southampton
- Spoiler:
- This is a match up between the two promoted sides from last season. Southampton come here after a decent start, and Reading are looking good. This game is a tight affair throughout. Southampton seem intent on keeping Drogba quiet, which is a tactic that kept him well quiet. However they are set up very defensively and Reading had lots of possession. The first half however went by without much to note, apart from Cole missing a half chance for Reading. Southampton continued to play defensively second half, just inviting Reading onto them. And this worked well until 77 minutes when Cole pounced onto a cross, to head powerfully home. Saints didn't know how to react to this, and ultimately they lost this match as soon as Reading scored. Reading should have won by more, but needed more creativity.
The Expert's Opinion (by Steve Claridge)
Southampton's defensive tactics didn't work as well this time away from home and they should see this as an opportunity missed. Reading played well, and picked up 3 points, they look a good side this season. Saints need to be more attacking entering an away arena, as the home side just piled on the pressure and backed by the crowd won this game.
How the votes were spread
3-4-1
Reading 1-0 Southampton
Cole
Newcastle v Arsenal
- Spoiler:
- This is a big game in terms of what both teams will be aiming for come the season end. Thus this was a cagey affair for the most part. Both sides looked to retain possession in midfield but in defence looked to get men behind the ball. Newcastle started off the better with Walcott beating Gibbs and putting in a great cross from which Ba missed a big chance. This was the main chance of the first half, of which in the end Arsenal took control of possession. The second half started with Arsenal in control of the midfield battle. And they managed to create a chance which RVP converted on 68 minutes. And after that Arsenal just dominated possession and Newcastle as much as they ran and tried just didn't quite have it on the day, and the Geordie fans went home a bit unhappy.
The Expert's Opinion (by Gareth Southgate)
This was a game of possession chess between two quite even sides. However today Arsenal just managed to gain the upper hand in possession and this eventually told as Newcastle apart from the Ba chance didn't create a lot. RVP took the one chance he got, and in the end it's a very good win for Arsenal.
How the votes were spread
0-6-3
Newcastle 0-1 Arsenal
RVP
Liverpool v West Ham
- Spoiler:
- We turn up at Anfield wondering, will it be another draw for Liverpool? Well they came out as a side possessed today, and in the end a win for them was the only result. They took the lead when Luis Suarez waltzed past Paulo Ferreira to slot cooly home from 13 yards out on 20 minutes. Liverpool continued to dominate the first half, however West Ham did look dangerous with Sturridge causing Toure some problems. It was 1-0 to the home team at the break. Liverpool came out second half and again controlled the game, with Suarez scoring a second goal from a Nani cross on 51 minutes to all but kill off the game. West Ham's ageing defence struggled against the pace and skill of Liverpool, and this was shown again when Liverpool scored a 3rd goal on 81 minutes with Carroll scoring after some good work by Carroll. Liverpool will be glad to get that win under there belt, and West Ham will have to put this down as another loss, but look to there home games especially to pick up points.
The Expert's Opinion (by Martin Keown)
Liverpool set up with good skill and pace against what was a slow and ageing West Ham defence. In the end it was a comfortable win for Liverpool with West Ham not really getting anything going up front. They need to get this defeat out of there system and look to pick up home points. Liverpool will look to use this to kickstart there campaign.
How the votes were spread
6-2-0
Liverpool 3-0 West Ham
Carroll, Suarez x2
