It was an absolutely stunning perforamance. Today is the start of it lads, you haven't really underperformed don't buy into the stuff BBC are pedalling. Team GB have arrived and be prepared for quite a few more medals!

So far the only gold medal favourite that has failed was Cavendish, and that's because the road race tactics didn't play out in the way GB hoped. Tom Daley and Pete Waterfield were a medal possible, but not likely to be a gold (China being dominant in diving). It's not that team GB have under-performed, more that we haven't had the same over-performance (other than the men gymnasts and perhaps the women footballers) as we had early in Beijing.

I wouldn't have fancied Cav considering how much effort he put into the TDF.

We've had more medals than I would've thought by this point. Now the events we dominate come in.

Re: Team GB's first Gold!
A wonderful victory , dominated from start to finish , well done
Hopefully this will now stop everyone fretting ( rather unnecessarily , in my opinion ) about so-called underperformance...
As dummy pointed out , most of the " missed chances " were actually only "possibles" , and while it might have been nice to have had a couple more medals instead of fifth places , we should realize that you can't win everything.
Reckon we should stay chilled and just enjoy the show - plenty more medals to come.

Elsewhere, GB beat Argentina 4-1. Alas, it wasn't football.

Re: Team GB's first Gold!
Let's not forget the mens 8 in the rowing. A very commendable bronze medal, and going into the last 500 metres they had actually gotten into the lead against the red hot, very strong German 8.
GB didn't lose that race, they made Germany win it. A fantastic race and a marvellous effort which left them exhausted and unable to fend off Canada, the reigning champions from Beijing for the silver.
Well done the Mens 8.... especially Greg Searle, getting a bronze medal 20 years after he got a gold in the coxed pairs at Barcelona in 1992.
As I type, Bradley Wiggins leads the road race by 11 seconds at the second split. Cancellara is 30 seconds behind Wiggins at that split. Wiggo is in Gold medal position. Fingers crossed.
Chris Froome is going well too.

Could potentially have both Wiggins and Froome with medals.

Yes Crimey. That would go a long way towards making up for Saturday. Phinney for USA started well but is fading. Martin is closing up at the third split. Wiggo is ahead by 22 seconds at 3rd split.

Would love to see Frome get a medal, almost more than Wiggo. Can't see him catching Martin but a Brit one-two would be phenomenal!

Re: Team GB's first Gold!
Wiggins gold, Froome bronze for GB in the time trial.
Very impressive ride from Tony Martin for Germany to take silver after a difficult last few weeks (broke his wrist in a fall early in the Tour). Good for him to have Phinney just in front on the long straight through Bushey Park. Probably didn't make a difference to the result (he'd have been 2nd anyway), but probably helped him shave a few seconds
Wiggins was though in a completely different league from everyone else - virtually 1s per km quicker than anyone else, and just kept extending his lead through the two main intermediate checks and to the end (11s, 23s and 42s).
Only way he even has a little competition for SPOTY is if Andy Murray wins everything from now to the season end.

Re: Team GB's first Gold!
Incredible stuff. Arise Sir Bradley Wiggins..and yes might as well give him the Sports Personality with his gold medal..What a Legend.
And huge round of applause for Froome and everyone involved in British Cycling.
Coach of the year has to go to Dave Brailsford and team award to SKY!
What they have done for this sport has never been done before..just sensational.!

Doesn't Bradley Wiggins look like young Ronnie Wood?
