Women's boxing
Anyone watching this? It is absolutely awesome, they really do have a war, far better than the mens competition so far!

Re: Women's boxing
The atmosphere for the womens seems far better and noisier than for the men!
The Irish girl was impressive, especially in the 3rd round. I thought our girl was unlucky to get those counts but the Irish girl was better overall. There has been alot of talk about her as favourite to win gold.
I think I prefer the 2 minute, 4 round format. Seems to allow for better action as the fighters are not so tired.

Katie taylor is a national icon in Ireland, almost like what bolt means for Jamaica or even pacquiao for the phillapines. I have a lot of family in Ireland and they all adore her.
She has won loads of medals and is a brilliant fighter

Re: Women's boxing
Gotta agree with you gordy, I think the 4 x 2minute rounds make the amature boxing more exciting. The Irish girl was unbelievable in the 3rd, the GB girl really put it up to her in the first 2 rounds before getting blown away in the 3rd. Great entertainment.Gordy wrote:The atmosphere for the womens seems far better and noisier than for the men!

You do realise Gordy that the Irish girl is nothing but a BBC hype job.

Maybe so. There has been alot of hype about her for sure. The BBC have a profile of her even though she is not part of Team GB. But I thought she was good in her fight and looked very strong. She also has a great record of winning in other competitions. I think the hype is different for women because they are not being compared to greats. Comparing this guy Joshua to Lennox Lewis is ridiculous but Taylor is not being compared to anyone even if she is being overhyped.

Alma - it's an awesome night out! Was there for a weekend a month or so ago.
LJ - I know, it was funny talking to people about them as they didn't seem very popular when we were up there, sad really. Our taxi driver said they can't go out in Newcastle anymore as they're so disliked they'd get filled in and they know it.

One of them already has I beleive, not sure which one, dont really care actually.
It's a canny night out, but having lived here for 24 years I'm used to it so it isnt the same for me as 'tourists'.
Was in London for the Haye fight, I must say I've never met are more obnoxious, arrogant set of door staff. I couldn't get in any bar after the fight, had to resign myself to the casino to watch Khan get knocked out.

Re: Women's boxing
Yeh it's really tough here, found the Newcastle door staff much more 'accommodating'. That said, one of my mates (when I wasn't there) got kicked in the nuts by one of them for no good reason which was out of order (though, given he's a twit, very funny).

Re: Women's boxing
According to Lennox Lewis and BBC correspondent Ben Dirs the atmosphere for the womens boxing was better than the mens. I had no idea it was so popular seeing as this was the first time its been in the Olympics. The noise in the Jonas fight against Taylor was the loudest I have heard by a stretch. Seems like its really catching on.

Had two nights there. Highlight of Friday night was Floritas followed by Perdu (having gone to Sharks bar for the football and some crappy place on the main drag called Sammy Jacks's or something like that, big place, bit like a walkabout, with stripper like girls feeding guys shots on a stage).
Saturday night we started off in the Gate going to Players Bar and somewhere else (maybe Mood or Indigo) before heading on to Digital which was awesome.
Great bars/clubs, good prices, seriously hot girls, just a pity about the amount of meat-head guys (no offence ) though they thinned out at the better places.

Re: Women's boxing
The decibel level during Katie Taylor’s fight with Natasha Jonas this afternoon hit 113.7 – the highest recorded at London 2012 so far.
An International Olympic Committee official said the noise surpassed the sound recorded during GB's win in the cycling finals at the Velodrome last week.
The noise of a jet engine is around 140 decibels.
When Taylor's name was mentioned for the first time a full 90 minutes before her fight, London's ExCel boxing arena shook with a roar that one Irish fan said could even be heard at the nearby wrestling arena.

Sammy Jacks is awful, although the atmosphere on match days is pretty decent. Digital can be quite decent too, although the amount of drug users in there trying to be your best friend is annoying, especially when you don't touch that filth.
Flo's and Perdu and the rest of the bars on that strip are the best, although they can get a little busy.
And yes, Newcastle does have a lot of meat heads in white t-shirts that they (presumeably) bought from a womans shop.
I am going back to London soon (with work). Where is a good place to go. Tried Camden and a long street with lots of bars (??) with no luck. Where should I go?

lol your best bet is to read through some of the tips on the London 2012 visitors guide thread on here:

Think the best stuff is on the first couple of pages.

Is womens boxing exceptionally popular in Ireland then?

Katie Taylor is. Added the fact she is the country's greatest gold medal hope for the games, her record to date is impeccable.

Katie Taylor is a sporting icon over here. She also represents our national football team internationally. Women's team that is but going by the Euro's she's in with a shout for the mens team too
She's sparred some of the top male boxers from throughout the world also. She was sparring with Rigandeoux (not sure if spelling right) and she said she called him The Ghost as it's almost impossible to hit him. She's a 4 time world champion and currently the most successful amateur boxer in the world, male or female. Good article here today wrote on her in the US.

I knew there was alot of talk about Taylor being favourite to win a gold medal but I didnt realise womens boxing was that big in Ireland. Seems like its bigger than the mens going off the reception. It was definately the loudest I have heard of all the boxing I have watched so far.
