The Apprentice Task 5 - Premier League XI v Premier League XI
These are the teams for this task...
Twist
OTW
Sodhat
Nando
Viva
You each have 10 teams from the Premier League, allocated based on last seasons league positions. I want you to produce me the best possible squad you can, and the best starting XI you can, along with tactics.
The catch is that your squad must contain exactly 20 players with 2 from each of your ten clubs, and your starting XI must contain 1 player from each of the ten clubs.
The two teams will be voted on by the non-Apprentice managers and the winning team will be the one with the most votes. One person from that team will then get fired. Please make your submission on this page by 2pm on Thursday 9th August
Your teams are...
Twist, OTW, Sodhat
1 Manchester City
4 Tottenham Hotspur
5 Newcastle United
8 Liverpool
9 Fulham
12 Norwich City
13 Sunderland
16 Aston Villa
17 Queens Park Rangers

2 Manchester United
3 Arsenal
6 Chelsea
7 Everton
10 West Bromwich Albion
11 Swansea City
14 Stoke City

Re: The Apprentice Task 5 - Premier League XI v Premier League XI
TEAM NANDO AND VIVA TASK
- Spoiler:
- NANDO AND VIVAS APPRENTICE TASK
The players below are the ones we have picked for our 20 man squad, we have picked two players from each side and have one player from each side in our starting XI except Man Utd who we picked two players from.
1 Manchester United = Rooney and Valencia
3 Arsenal = Koscielny and RVP
6 Chelsea = Mata and Ramires
7 Everton = Fellaini and Heitinga
10 West Bromwich Albion = Jones and Odemwingie
11 Swansea City = Allen and Taylor
14 Stoke City = Shawcross and Huth
15 Wigan Athletic = Moses and McCarthy
18 Reading = Federici and Karacan
19 Southampton = Davies and LallanaNando and Viva XI and Tactics
Formation: 4-2-3-1Davies
Jones---Shawcross---Koscielny---Taylor
Fellaini----Karacan
Valencia----Mata----Moses
Rooney
Subs
Federici
Heitinga
Ramires
Lallana
Allen
Van Persie
Odemwingie
Set Pieces
Freekick 26 yards or more: Mata/Rooney
Freekick 25 yards or less: Mata
Corner right: Mata
Corner left: Valencia
Penalty: Rooney
Defending Corners: Big plays mark their big players
Attacking Corners: Fellaini get forward make a nuisance attack ball
KEEPER
Davies be confident always communicate with defenders, if you come out for the ball we prefer you to catch it but at times you must punch, when you do this allow the defence to know that you are coming for the ball with a nice early shout. When a striker is coming at you we would like you to stand as tall and big as possible making the goal look small, try and make the striker blink first hold your nerve and it can unsettle him. If you get the ball from their attack try to hit them on the counter by spreading the ball out with a long throw to wide men to start us off or if they short at the ball an long punt to Rooney.
DEFENCE
I want you lot to work as a unit, when one pushes up you all push up like a synchronized swimmer. When we're attacking the fullbacks will push up, depending on the side we push up the opposite FB will not go further then half way line. When we are on attack CB push forward which will force the opposition strikers to drop and cause a domino affect pushing their whole team into own half. Shawcross deal with the long balls, Koscielny drop back slightly and contest the second ball or any loose ball.
Jones don't dive into the opposition winger, jockey him, position yourself in a way where he will have to go away from goal or he put on his weaker foot. If they do put a lot of pressure with long balls you can tuck inside. When going forward we prefer you to use movement making runs beyond the LB to create space and opening for Valencia most of your attacking work will be done with running.
Shawcross we prefer you to play as the dominant defender, pick up the physical striker challenge for the headers and be up for the fight. Don't go too tight on your man leave a little space, get in the way of shots, block, intercept, don't follow your man out of position stay in your zone.
Koscielny pick up the SS/AM the one off the striker, we've seen you deal with Messi before so tricky customers shouldn't be to testing. Watch the ball and only put a tackle in when you can get the ball, you are quick enough so use your speed and timing of tackles and interceptions. I don't want you to leave a gap between yourself and Shawcross keep it tight.
Taylor don't dive into the opposition winger, jockey him, position yourself in a way where he will have to go away from goal or he put on his weaker foot. If they do put a lot of pressure with long balls you can tuck inside. When going forward use the ball get a feel of it link up with our wide man, pass and move get crosses in for our attackers.
MIDFIELD
Fellaini and Karacan will place as the base of our midfield, the two who will start moves for us and break up the play working together as a unit. Karacan will sit in front of the back four being disciplined in his play, he will pick up any free players or fill in for anyone out of position, get tackles in and quickly get the ball forward with snappy passes nothing Hollywood. Fellaini slightly ahead to put pressure on the opposition midfielders, use your power and strength to get at them, don't give them time to settle on the ball, drive forward with the ball support the attack and the defence.
The three in front will play as the offensive part of the midfield machine, Valencia has to give us width and protection to Jones who we have identified as our weakest player. Consistency is what we need and with Valencias crosses to Rooney we are sure of that up and down the wing use power and speed. Mata will play behind Rooney demanding the ball to play in Rooney or the other two wide players. Keep the ball ticking always look to move it. Moses to keep the defender guessing coming inside to run at them or using the width to run and get crosses, link up with Mata swapping positions.
Karacan your role will be to hold your position do not push forward play in front of the back four offering them protection and some steel. When the opposition come into your zone close them down, forcing them backwards, look for any free players to pick up intercepting, passes. When you get the ball keep it simple look for our fullbacks who will give support or Fellaini you don't need to play the through balls just simple so we retain possession.
Fellaini we are planning to use you as box to box but more work must be done in the defensive area. Help Karacan in defensive duties pressuring the opposition a little higher up so we can get the ball quicker, use your power and strength dominate the opposition you are tall look to win the aerial battles. When you get forward drive into the box make late surging runs, also when you are on the ball run with your dynamic style as you are hard to stop in full flow.
Valencia has to get the ball into the box a lot so Rooney can attack it, stay on the outside as it if effective whip it in. Use your pace to make off ball runs to stretch defence, track back and help Jones. Strong player so we expect that you can play a physical game against a tough LB.
Mata look to get into pockets and use your passing at full affect, run forward with the ball use your dribbling skills and your key passing to open up the opposition. Clip balls over the top or a defence splitting pass, get a shot in if you are in range, go out wide and use the space there if you are confined centrally. Always on the move don't be allowed to be marked.
Moses we want to see a mix from you, at times use the width of the pitch and run down it getting crosses and other times cut inside and run at the midfield or if you are closer to goal look for Rooney/Mata linking up with them. You are known for your dribbles so use your strengths and get at the opposition fullback, we want you to drop back as well when we don't have the ball.
STRIKER
Rooney will be leading our attack, I feel the three behind him offer Rooney what he needs to play at his very best as a lone striker, Valencia will always offer consistent balls for him, the other two are flexible in their positions to get beyond him at times or linking up with him with a quick one or two. We think with the team we have here Rooney will be less likely to drop deep to pick up the ball because of the quality of players behind him to give him the service.
Rooney always stay on the move get between the two CB, be aware of Valencias crossing get in front of your man make the last second movement to beat him to the ball. Mata will be looking to play you in through centrally so at times you will play very high on the shoulder of defender time your runs, link up with the attacking players behind you quick pass here and there to quicken tempo, if you can run at the opposition with the ball then do that pass and move and get into box vary your style.
65 MIN SUB
Moses off Ramires on (Fresh legs and energy into midfield)
75 MIN SUB IF LOSING
Karacan off Van Persie on (We play 4-4-2 with Rooney and Persie up top)
75 MIN SUB IF WINNING
Karacan off Allen on (Someone who cna keep ball well)
82 MIN SUB IF LOSING
Valencia off Odemwingie on (Play as wide forward)
On paper this task looked very easy but in fact it was very very difficult, each time we thought of a player we had to think of the only two player per club rule. We had to change a lot to get the team we wanted. Below we will give reasons on why we picked the 20 players.
Kelvin Davies was voted in the Championship team of the season, earlier on in the season he was the reason why Southampton were in the race for promotion during the Nov-Jan time where he picked up points for them.
Adam Federici another keeper who had an outstanding season in the Championship and helped his team win the league. There are some who say he should have been in the team. I'm happy to have two very good keepers.
Billy Jones in a season where WBA had problems at that back and made many changes Jones showed his pedigree and stood out. He may not be the most technically gifted but a team does need players who give their all.
Ryan Shawcross had a very good season with Stoke, a solid dependable defender who we feel we need against the big physical strikers.
Laurent Koscielny was Arsenals stand out defender yet again, he has bulked up since his debut season and is improving every time. We knew we had to pick him he has played against the best and does not look out of place.
Robert Huth played 34 games for Stoke last was their player of the year in 2011, has improved massively from his days at Chelsea an he can also cover at RB.
John Heitinga one of the most consistent players for Everton last season, Baines may have got all the plaudits but this guy was fantastic. A born leader and can raise his game for the big matches also cover at a good level as a DM.
Neil Taylor played in a side who like to play Football last season one of the main reasons we bought him in. Looking for a fullback who is comfortable on the ball and he ticks the box good at defending an decent going forward.
Marouane Fellaini Evertons answer to Yaya Toure, such a talented player he can play all over the midfield and even cover as a striker. A very tenacious player but he knows how to play Football the right way.
Jem Karacan a smart intelligent player who plays his role very well, mature for his age as he has already captained the Turkish U-21 side. Feel he will work well with Fellaini as he will sit back more.
Joe Allen different to the other midfielders we have, very tidy on the ball and he will always look to keep it on the deck our style of play and constant pass and move which gives him a place in our squad.
James McCarthy another young intelligent player, powerful also intelligent, a high energy player who works well off and on the ball.
Ramires AM, LM, RM, CM, DM box to box this guy can do it all and at a very very good level, he has the energy, the determination and the will. With only 20 players allowed he is perfect as a he is very versatile.
Adam Lallana plays as an attacking midfielder, gets goal from midfield something that is vital to any team. An eye for goal, with silky skills and the ability to match. He also made the Championship team of the year last season.
Antonio Valencia one of the most consistent players in the league, I know he will link up well with Rooney. Gives us proper width and is different to the other wide men we have.
Juan Mata a quality player can make something out of nothing, knows how to use the ball and when to use it, very good at keeping it. Is comfortable playing anywhere in the attacking area and will always be a threat.
Victor Moses looked very good in a poor Wigan team, he had the highest dribble ratio in the league. Quick, strong and athletic, he knows where the goal is despite playing wide.
Robin Van Persie one of the best strikers in the world, scored goals at a weak Arsenal team. Not only goals but he is very good linking up with others dropping deep and involving teammates into play.
Wayne Rooney do I really need to explain his inclusion, scores goals, creates goals, works for the team, unselfish, he can do everything, shoot, tackle, head, finish, pass. The most complete player in the Premier League.
Peter Odemwingie different to the strikers we currently have at the side, he has raw pace something we need against tiring defences or we could use him out wide and he can unleash the pace. He also knows how to score goals so he would be good as an impact player.
Re: The Apprentice Task 5 - Premier League XI v Premier League XI
Team TOS' Submission
- Spoiler:
- Apprentice Task 5
The task sees us making a side out of 10 Premier League clubs, and with the caveat of using only 2 from each club, and one of each in the starting XI.
As a team we have worked together to:- Identify players from each side;
- Select two of each club;
- Organise them into a starting line-up;
- Flesh out the squad;
- Create a tactical plan; and
- Justify our decisions.
As the Project Manager, I now present our full squad, our starting line-up and our tactical vision.
With thanks to Twist and Trebs for their efforts.
Squad (20):
Goalkeepers
John Ruddy (Nor)
England's number 3 keeper, before injury robbed him of his Euro 2012 place. Dependable and one of the main reasons for Norwich's good season.
Rob Green (QPR)
Rob Green has just joined from West Ham and has had several years experience at the top level, including international recognition. He is a sound goalkeeper, and will act as our number 2 behind Ruddy. We can rest easy knowing we have extremely sound cover in the goalkeeper position.
Centre Backs
Vincent Kompany (Man City)
The rock in the centre of Man City's defence. Hugely important to our side as will provide strength in the centre, as well as good ball playing ability to turn defense into attack. A great leader as well.
James Tomkins (W Ham)
James Tomkins has established himself as the first choice CB for West Ham and has had experience of the Premier League before. He was called up to the GB team for the Olympic games, cementing his position as one of the brightest prospects at CB for England. He will play alongside Kompany, and will seek to learn his craft from the more experienced player – but have no doubt he is up to the task here.
Martin Skrtel (L’pool)
One of the best defenders in the EPL last season. A strong body, very good in the air and he is dangerous at set-pieces for the opponent.
Full Backs
John O’Shea (Sund)
John O’Shea is a versatile footballer, and his versatility makes him vital to our squad. He will cover a number of positions, and with masses of experience with Manchester United at the top level, and Sunderland more recently, we know he can be depended on to perform for us.
Fabio (QPR)
The young left back is on loan at QPR this season, and will relish the chance to further his experience in the Premier League. He has been with Manchester United since the age of 15 and so must have huge ability. His attacking instincts will sit well with our team’s philosophy.
Phillip Bardsley (Sund)
A very good RB, and has the ability to play anywhere across the back four.
Alan Hutton (Villa)
Another dependable RB which will provide good cover for Bardsley.
Central Midfielders
Kevin Nolan (W Ham)
Another leader in the squad, and is known for the impact he can have as an attacking midfielder. Great dedication and can play in any central position in midfield and also as a second striker.
Yohan Cabaye (Newc)
An amazing first season at Newcastle. Known for his vision and passing ability, as well as his defensive capabilities. Will provide the platform for most of our attacks.
Scott Parker (Tott)
Scott Parker has had an outstanding few years and his energy in the middle has been harnessed to good effect in a DM role. He will provide cover here, but he is so much more than a DM, and should we need to utilise him in a box to box role or a more advanced area, he is capable.
Lucas Leiva (L’pool)
Lucas was probably Liverpool’s best player prior to his injury and we want the combative Brazilian to anchor the midfield and break up play for us all day long. He is an international with years of experience at the top level, and probably just coming into his prime.
Attacking Midfield/Wingers
Moussa Dembele (Ful)
Dembele was a surprise performer for Fulham and the Belgian is versatile enough to play in several forward roles. We want to utilise that versatility and use him wherever possible.
David Silva (Man C)
Maybe the best player on the Champions’ team, Silva will unlock defences for us from the middle or the flank. He is a winner of more or less everything at the top level, and still young.
Clint Dempsey (Ful)
Dempsey has been impressive ever since arriving at Fulham. While always touted for a big move, it is yet to occur, but he will be a big player for us on either flank or through the middle in midfield or up front.
Anthony Pilkington (Nor)
Good young player who will only get better. Provided vital goals for Norwich last season, and would be a good impact sub to have.
Rafael van der Vaart (Tott)
With a lone striker, VDV is probably the best EPL second striker/attacking midfield player you can have. Like Nolan, is able to play any central position in midfield.
Strikers
Papiss Cisse (Newc)
Superb first season, and scored some unbelivable goals. Fantastic finishing, and proved his calibre with 13 goals in 14 matches last season.
Darren Bent (Villa)
Darren Bent just scores goals. He may get criticised for other aspects, but as long as he scores we don’t care. He operates as a lone front man at club level and we have no doubt that the players behind him will lay it all on a plate for the archetypal poacher to do his stuff.
Starting XI
-------------------------------Ruddy (Nor)
Bardsley (Sund)---Kompany (Man C)---Tomkins (W Ham)---Fabio (QPR)
--------------------Lucas (L’pool)----Cabaye (Newc)
Dempsey (Ful)-----------------VDV (Tott)------------Silva (Man C)
-------------------------------Bent (Villa)
Tactics
In Kompany we have the leader of our side, who can organise the defensive line. The attacking three behind the striker are all able to play in a central role and should interchange. This makes it difficult for them to be picked up by man-markers. We should look to make sure we keep the ball and dominate possession, with Bent able to put the chances away.
We should be patient when we have the ball and focus on getting the basics right and retaining possession. We have some good technical players going forward and they can beat their men.
Defence
Kompany runs the defense, he can win headers, make tackles, blocks. He is one of the best defenders in the Premier League. Tomkins is also big and strong and can dominate aerially. He has came off the back of a strong season at West Ham.
Bardsley and especially Fabio can make runs down the flanks and get balls in. When they defend they should make sure they keep in line with the flat back four, which Kompany organises and show their winger wide, force them to attempt a cross rather than allowing them infield. If the cross comes in both Kompany and Tomkins at 6'4 can deal with it.
Midfield
Lucas should be our screen in front of the back four and should pretty much defend as this allows the full backs to be more aggressive. If they play an attacking midfielder then he has the responsibility of pressurizing him, making him think quickly and make mistakes. Cabaye should play in a box to box role where he can help Lucas when we don't have possession, but when we have it he can play long balls through to our attacking players.
Van Der Vaart can create chances, shoot, and do about everything. He should try to get just between the midfield and defensive lines, and try to make some space there. Silva and Dempsey are both quality playmakers and can come infield, due to the full backs attacking where we will have space created. There will be a lot of uncertainty throughout their defense as to who they should mark. They both have the dribbling ability and skills to take on a man and play the killer pass or go for a shot, whichever is the better option.
Attack
Darren Bent is a very experienced striker. When he is fit, he scores goals. In his last two clubs (Aston Villa and Sunderland) he scored 50 goals in 96 games. Silva, Dempsey and Van Der Vaart will create the chances and he is more than capable of putting them away. He can look to get on the shoulder of the last man which would cause problems, as they will be forced into a deeper defensive line due to his pace and then the midfield will have even more space to operate in.
Set Pieces
Kompany and Tomkins should both get forward for set pieces. Bent is a poacher and should get on the six yard line, and either Cabaye or Dempsey should get just outside the box for a long range effort.
Left Corner - Silva
Right Corner - Dempsey
Free Kicks - Silva/Cabaye
Penalties - Dempsey
Substitutions
We have a lot of good options throughout our squad. Depending on the situation, we could change the squad however we wanted.
If winning
Bring on Scott Parker for VDV. This would give us more steel in the middle of the park and with Lucas/Parker/Cabaye we would dominate the ball and add extra energy to the midfield.
If drawing
Mix up the attack a bit, bring on Cisse for Bent who can score great goals and use his pace to attack a tiring defense. Parker or Nolan could come on for Lucas to provide more of an attacking threat there. Even bring on Dembele for one of the three behind the striker to give us an out and out winger to threaten.
If losing
Move to a more attacking 4-4-2. Parker and Cabaye should be partners in the centre of midfield, and Cisse can partner Darren Bent in attack. We would have a more narrow midfield and Hutton can come on to provide more attacking threat down the right to match Fabio on the left. - Identify players from each side;
