Certainly, Hampshire took a gamble when they through him, Bates and Briggs into the side around the same time and backed them to come good and it looks as though it is going to pay off for them and you can't knock that.

Looks like there will be a very exciting end to the last two of the current Championship matches which could have quite a bearing at the top of the table - provided the weather behaves!
Middlesex need three more Warks' wickets to pull off a stunning victory. Debutant Patel has 3 wickets second time round.
With 5 wickets left, Sussex need 49 more to defeat Somerset. The match is due to resume in the next few minutes.

I jinx the Somerset v Sussex match!
Further rain prevents a resumption as both sides have to settle for a draw. Good news for Warks as that cements their top place spot ....

Somerset - Sussex rain-off must be of huge disappointment to Sussex, and is very good news indeed for Warwickshire, who now have 11 points and a game in hand on Sussex and 27 points without the game in hand on Notts.
With three games left you've got to think another win would just about do it, whilst with only two games left Sussex would probably have to win both now.
Derbyshire's Division Two lead is now 17 points and a game in hand on Hampshire, and 30 points without the game in hand on Yorkshire. Again you've got to think that one more win would secure promotion for them.

Re: County Championship Round 17 Discussion Thread
Weather intervenes in the Sussex and Middlesex matches.
I think Middlesex will be very pleased with their performance: Murtagh and Rolland-Jones continuing their fine form, a contribution from the spinner (!) and Malan scoring some runs (at last!).
I'm off to Lords on Monday for the final (and somewhat meaningless, but it should be fun anyway) 40-over match.
Sussex will be very frustrated, that was a great chance to really put the pressure on Warwickshire. That really should be game over concerning the championship now, but we've said that before...
Hampshire with a very poor performance (until a somewhat silly last wicket stand - silly season amongst us apparently - it used to be these tail-enders would just slog a quick 30 at best then hole out somewhere (or be clean bowled) now we've had 2 tail-end centuries in a couple of days, middlesex's last wicket producing almost 100 in two goes against Surrey, etc.). Kent and Yorkshire now right back in it for promotion.

Amazing to think that Yorkshire have won two games all season, but would still currently be favourites to be the 2nd promoted side...
