Coaches talk about 60 in the last 5 overs nowadays if you've got a set batsman and wickets in hand. That would get England 169.
Great start with that over.

Also the value by not losing wickets is that you have less new batsmen using up a few balls to get themselves acclimatised.

Morgan goes with 3 overs remaining. England 141-3.
Luke Wright reaches his highest T-20I score and the cricinfo commentator reminds that when he scored his previous highest, 71 against the Netherlands, England lost!.

Oh dear. That's the drop of the tournament surely. Even Vaughan could have taken it...
England still on course for that 170.

Same story for the Afghans.... Bowled well, but the fielding. Oh my.

These last two fours by Buttler show exactly why firing it in yorker length doesn't work anymore.
England could even get 180 here.

Can Buttler reproduce the distructive hitting against South Africa in the previous match? England 155-3 with 2 overs to go.

Buttler LBW for a decent cameo. In comes Bairstow.

Afghanistan bowling standards have been pretty OK, I would say much better than that of Zimbabwe and Bangladesh. Their batting is too much hit or miss but there is some raw tallent in there, but the fielding is just of local club standards. Absolutely awful

15 off 7 for Buttler, decent cameo. He would have liked a few more though. I thought he was a bit unlucky with the LBW on first look, but it was clipping.
Jonny. No-ball, six.

Re: T20 World Cup: Live Matches Discussion
Bairstow has a sighter first ball - 80 meters into the crowd...
3 no-balls in 2 overs is criminal though.
Afghanistan have some talent, but also quite a bit of work to make on the basics.

Buttler goes LBW(thankfully no catching involved), but Bairstow comes in and hits a 6 right away, and its a no ball too!.

And another no ball, but this time just the single. England should score 180+ here.

190 is becoming a real possibility, and 200 won't be surprising.

Got to vary your lengths and lines more Afghanistan. Full and straight too easy if you get it slightly wrong.
3 consecutive 6s from Wright, onto 94. Just beginning to think it might be time for me to eat some humble pie, although his ability to hit medium pace out of the park has never been in question.
Better. Back of a length slower ball, just a single.
Won't be far from 200.
Perfect from England.

32 runs off an over that included a wicket!
I'm definitely one of his critics but have to say well played Luke Wright today. An excellent and brutal innings.

13 of the last over, and England will be scoring 200. Afghanistan have lost it over the last 4 overs.

One thing is sure, Afghanistan will not settle for a 125-5 performance, they will be giving absolutely everything and the trigger happy lineup has a few who can hit some real big shots.

Why would you send in Patel to run for the final ball? Surely Broad would have been a better bet?

I also like Bumble but he's reminding me of the half-wits I work with that get a laugh for a comment and then feel the need to repeat it ad nauseam.
Though Jameslincs comment made me smile.

99no for Wright. Still no T20 hundred by an England player but now have two 99's

Re: T20 World Cup: Live Matches Discussion
99 not out! What is it with England players scoring 99 in T20s?
Excellent from England, particularly on this pitch. Just about the perfect knock, great stuff from Wright well supported by Morgan and Hales, then good cameos from Buttler and Bairstow.
Afghanistan will come out swinging for sure, but really they should learn from how England have played, not mind a few quiet overs, get settled then hit out on merits.

Re: T20 World Cup: Live Matches Discussion
So after a worrying first 4 overs where Afghanistan did really well, the Champions took control and Afghanistan fell to pieces. Fantastic innings by Luke Wright and 197 will be way too much for Afghanistan. Hopefully our bowlers can lay down a marker.

26-8, 50 is looking too far away from Afghanistan. A terrible disappointment after they managed to compete against the Indians in a spirited way in the first game.

Afghanistan aren't losing by the biggest margin, but they might end up posting the lowest T-20I total.

Bowled them out for 80. A very good all-round performance and our demolition of Afghanistan was far better than what the Indians did on Wednesday so that has to be a good sign. Well done England.

Gulbodin Naib's 44 help Afghanistan avoid the lowest T-20 score, but this has been a massive loss, falling short by 116 runs in the end.

Re: T20 World Cup: Live Matches Discussion
Today's matches....
NZ again saw one man get a big proportion of their runs.
I think that in the past criticism of Bangladesh has been very harsh - they shouldn't have been made a Test nation straight away in 2000 (Full Member yes, but they needed time to build a structure), and have had an extremely young team (even now the likes of Mushfiq and Shakib who have been around for years are barely older than our so called youngsters - the likes of Bairstow etc.). This year there has been significant progress, particularly in the Asia Cup and also at the BPL where a number of Bangladeshi players performed well, but they weren't great today. They'll struggle v Pakistan, as they did in their series with them at the back end of last year, because the teams are too similar and Pakistan are obviously better.
Tamim Iqbal is a very poor starter - so often he gets out for 0 or 1 in the first couple of overs.
Afghanistan fell into the trap of conceding a big total (they did well with the ball though - maybe not quite as well as v India), and not quite knowing how they could chase it down. That saw them get into the go for every ball mindset which rarely works over a 20 over period, particularly at the start of an innings when the butterflies are going. We saw much better batting from them when faced with the more manageable but still eventually out of reach 160 the other day.
Not much we can read into England, apart from to say that they showed again that they have something different about them in T20 - named a bowling attack that won't allow batsmen to boss the game.
I'm a fan of the Associates but I must say I'm looking forward to tomorrow with two competitive matches.

True, but we beat Afghanistan far better than India did so that can only be a good sign.

What like pre tournament favourites Pakistan?
Afghanistan are a nothing side, but we have seen england make heavy weather against associates in the past. Coupling this with the warm up victories and a drawn series against SA shows England are still a top side. Some of the potential weak links look to be in good shape ( notably Luke Wright ). Thare more they are beating Asian sides in Asia, something that if you listened to kp fan (or whatever hes calling himself this weak) youd believe was impossible.
Id still be surprised to see them win the thing but they have started well. and must be full of confidence. They are top of the world rankings, and only lost 6 of the 24 games since the last world cup started (26 if you include the warm ups).
The Afghanistan result may be pretty meaningless, but Im starting to get my faith back in England now.
