Scotland's annual wum (or not)
wum alert! wum alert!
For the umpteenth year in a row Scotland enter the upcoming international season with great prospects.
Once again there has been a triumphal summer for the nation in the Southern hemisphere sweeping aside not only the PIs but Oz.
Added to this Edinburgh were HEC semi-finalists and Glasgow came third in the Rabo.
This time Scotland will progress. This year McYoungsters will come to the fore (well maybe next year). This year (next year, sometime never ...).

Re: Scotland's annual wum (or not)
It's important that before the start of each season Scotland are labelled 'dark horses' and tipped for great things. This yearly ritual 'tops up' the dark magic which keeps Scotland in the bottom two of the 6 nations. Without it we would all be crushed under boot. Well done Portnoy for keeping this cruel but necessary ritual alive.

Re: Scotland's annual wum (or not)
Ah its just the usual cliché that journos trot out every year.
Lets play a game. I'll write an over used cliche and you all guess what team it refers to.
"Which team will turn up?"
"Still Rebuilding"
"A plucky defeat but full of passion"
"Played well for 60 minutes but ultimately beaten by a better side"
"A dark horse for the 6 Nations"
"They did well last season but are inconsistent year after year"

You can be as patronizing as you like, but this time I for one am convinced Scotland can do even better than last 6N

"Which team will turn up?" - France? Edinburgh perhaps!
"Still Rebuilding" - Probs england, but its more fun to think they mean Oz
"A plucky defeat but full of passion" - Scotland
"Played well for 60 minutes but ultimately beaten by a better side" - ireland?
"A dark horse for the 6 Nations" - Scotland again?
"They did well last season but are inconsistent year after year" - Take yer pick, Ireland, Wales, England, SA, Arg

How bout these ones?
"they are an ageing team"
"They've promised so much but delivered so little"
"They have some world class players but they don't perform together"
"When the big occasion comes, they tend to go hiding"
"The team needs more than one leader"
"The captain needs to lead by example, not cry like a baby"

They need some consistentcy in their rugby. The only thing they are consistent at is being dark horses, which is their annual label. But I to think they will do a lot better this time around. Just who will it be at the expense of? France hopefully.

Re: Scotland's annual wum (or not)
Scotland have three home games in a row (sandwiched between trips to Twickenham and Paris). That should be a chance to get some momentum going.
They should be confident of beating Italy at home and possibly Ireland. Wales will be tough (even at home) and going to Twickenham in the first game will be very difficult, considering their previous record there. I can see them winning against France if they've already got a couple of good results under their belt by then unless the French are having a good tournament.
Two wins should be a minimum aim, but I don't see them getting top half.

look at their fixtures
it is all about the calcutta cup and if they can win that anything is possible
beat eng at twix and they will smash italy at home; with that momentum i think beating ireland at home won't be all that hard. that's 3/3
they then have wales at home too who if history has tuaght us anything, will finish 4th after a slam year.
so its France in Paris for the Slam....easy

Scotland to be thrown out of the 6 Nations for paying match organisers to play Kenny Loggins' 'Playing With The Boys' whenever England take the field.

Oh ye of little faith,Scotland have nothing like the resources of England ,who has? They did something none of the other touring sides WIN.Belittle them all you like at least they beat Australia, something Wales failed to do at 3 attempts. As an Anglo-Scot i`m proud of my heritage against any versus the All Blacks.Sometimes when threads like this appear and I remember smug England and France sides.Counting there chickens, then going home with there tails between there legs. They won`t win the 6Ns,but just may rub some noses in the dirt too!!!

I certainly hope that Scotland do win a few more in the 6N this year because with the same certainty as Inverdale having three shirt buttons undone, all of the Lions 50:50 player calls will fall in the favour of the player who has been on a winning side the most.

Wales most recent probable team
Leigh Halfpenny
Alex Cuthbert Gloucester
Jonathan Davies Solihull
Ashley Beck
George North Kings Lynn
Rhys Priestland
Mike Phillips
Gethin Jenkins
Matthew Rees
Adam Jones
Luke Charteris Camborne
Alun Wyn Jones
Dan Lydiate Salford
Sam Warburton
Toby Faletau - Tonga
Lets not talk about the birth place two most influential members of the coaching staff
yeah thats 6 out 15 starters...... not exactly a Welsh team that has won so much over the last two seasons is it
To get back to the original thread
Autumn Internationals will give the inexperienced but talented players some added game time against the "best of breed" which can only bode well for the 6Ns which by the way is SIX MONTHS AWAY....... I am confident we will have a better 6Ns that the last five

Where has anyone in this thread mentioned the birth place of the Scottish players? Nowhere. When then, out of the blue, do you feel the need to have a pop at the birth place of our players? That's worse than a HERSH level WUM.

Actually Morg did Griff. So you've made an unnecessary personal attack in response to FF's testy response to Morgs slightly tetchy original post. So none of you look particularly good.

Unfortunately Morgannwg has the knack of sabotaging a decent thread with one liners (with no back up) that will wind up people . I have responded with facts........... as one of my compatriots said maybe he should stick to winding up people on the welsh threads

I assumed, maybe wrongly, that Morgannwg was referring to Emack being an All Black fan but not actually being a New Zealander. Why else would he mention new zealand and scotland? There aren't any kiwis in the Scotland team are there?
Was a bit harsh though. Hot headed maybe. Apologies.

little bit off thread here (sorry)
but I think Prydie of the NGDs (and the Scarlets Liam Williams) have had a great start to the season and are well placed to back up 1/2p at FB if he is injured long term

Yes, I think those two have started brilliantly. Liam Williams reminds me a bit of JPR! All action, no fear, etc. Prydie is bringing something new to the Dragons, and is a great kicker which I never knew before.

The only unnecessary comment was from FHF. Griff is correct, my comment had nothing to with Scotlands players. Seeing as Emack mentioned he likes to follow Scotland because he has some Scottish heritage, I asked about his Kiwi heritage (if any?) because he supports the All Blacks. I can't see how anyone, least of all you Pete, could get confused by that comment.
And going on about where players were born is a pedantic isn't it? How can they help where they were born and how does a birthplace define who you are? Genuinely puzzled.

Folks, general warning coming up.
Please all mind your language, it does not hurt to remain polite.
Following that, it also does not hurt to refrain from commenting on an article when all you are seeking to do is irritate other posters and spoil what could be a perfectly decent thread. It's also pretty obvious who those posters are. Please just behave yourselves or further action will be taken. Ta.

I agree with Mowgli. If the Scots can beat England then that will give them sufficient momentum to carry them a good way through the competition.
There's nothing to say they couldn't either. A lot of rugby to be played between now and the 6 Nations.
