Connery & Ferguson embarrass everyone but think its wonderful.
This is what happens to old men who spend too much time being told how marvellous and funny they are.
What pains.
Ferguson: "I've been coming here the last three years and I explained how Scotland invented the World. Today we invented the wind" you don't say Alex, how great of you to share that with us.
Connery: "Today (Scotland) conquered the world" FFS what are you on about?
It would be like having my Dad turn up at my daughters 21st and telling everyone stories from his childhood. The only difference is I'd be there to drag him off.

BB... Old people should be allowed their amnesiac trips down memory lanes. The Young 'uns should pardon us our senility and look at us fondly because we were once young as well, in a bygone era, perhaps.

Personally, I would have preferred it if such a scene had been left until after a slam win.

Great Scot - didn't realise they are interviewed 007 and the Guvnor, not that I can understand the latter anyway (it's not the accent, it's the fact that he barely parts his lips to speak!!)
I did see them looking all paternal and fondly at Murray

Ferguson was at the wine!!
The exchange, peppered by much lubricated laughter, went like this: Connery: "Excuse me for interrupting, but I just wanted to make a point. Where's Alex? [Applause]. I don't know where your mother is. Ah, there she is."
Murray: "Are you going to be around tomorrow?" Connery [deaf to the question]: "Come on, Judy. Judy, Judy, Judy." Murray [to his mum]: "You smell of wine." Judy [nodding at Ferguson]: "He made me have wine. He's just been telling me that Scotland invented the world." Ferguson: "Been coming here the last three years to New York, and I explained how Scotland invented the world; today we invented the wind."
Connery: "Today they conquered the world!" Ferguson: "Very good. Fantastic." Murray [beaming and bemused]: "See you after the match tomorrow." Ferguson: "Continue your interview … You know I don't talk to journalists."

I saw Connery's straw hat yesterday...how could a formerly stylish and eloquent James Bond stoop so low....as he would say it was a "Sh1te for shore eyes".
Alex Salmond would lapping those comments up, being the reptilian politician he is.

Outside of their specialist fields Connery and Fergussion are just rich ordinary blokes. What reporters wish to report during some random drunken revelry are not the musings of two philosophers, but the drunken meanderings of two half-pi$$ed elderly celebrities. However these "private" warblings made public by hard-pressed journo's should not detract us from the qualities of these two seniors in their respective fields.

Poor old Andy, though. I hadn't realised it all involved his Mother. the guy has real stuff to do and doesn't need drunk old men and a tipsy Mum showing him up.
Please God no invasion at the ceremony if he wins.
Its impossible to guess what Lendl makes of it.

Hopefully a glance from Llendl will keep them all in place until the match is over!
I think Judy is great, fab for British tennis etc, etc, but she really should watch the match out of sight of her son - it's too much added pressure on him to watch her tight lipped with tension and hysterical with relief at different points - he doesn't need to carry that as well as trying to deal with his own emotions imo. He needs to do it for himself and not feel that its causing his mother agonies (she can tell him that afterwards).
Judy should take a leaf out of Uncle Toni's inscrutable countenance (not Sebastien Nadal - looks like he needs anger management!)

Good point. I'd like to ask if anyone can say whether there was any correlation between Djokovic winning stuff and his parents being lower profile.time please wrote:Hopefully a glance from Llendl will keep them all in place until the match is over!

Why couldn't they just wait until after he wins, you just feel like they're jinxing it. A final is nothing new or special for Andy anymore; he needs the win.

I don't think it is easy for children to make them responsible for their parents' happiness or sanity - so I'd say, yeah definitely a correlation.
I find Judy adds to my anxiety if I am rooting for Murray, so can't imagine what it is like for him.

I noticed that from his reaction to winning. There was a fist pump, a jump and a "Come On!" but not much else. He didn't do a "Nadal" and collapse on his back.

I think that is really a sign of how ready he is for it. I always remember his tears, and sinking to his knees after coming through against Stan Wawrinka in 5 sets under the roof in 2009, I think. I always thought that whatever that match cost him he should have put on a public face that said it was just another day at the office, albeit a tough one.
His response to coming through against Berdych was that the real business has yet to be conducted and it sent a clear message that he expects nothing less from himself now. That's good body language and I think the granite jawed Ivan has to be thanked for that.

To be honest I think Murray will be able to handle the additional attention associated with the inebriated interventions of these two caledonians. I thought he would be distracted by all the attention given to him during the Olympics, but I couldn't have been further from the truth.

I remember that too, it changed the opinion of him that I had built up during 2008. I always had his mentality down as that he felt he was the best and should be winning and that the pressure was under control so I too was confused by his reaction after that match. Then a series of further damaging losses brought him to where he was about a year ago mentally. A win here should restore what he once had and then some.

No pressure at the moment too. The rest of Britain has forgotten about him just now because of the Games.
Lendl deserves so much credit for this upward curve though.

I think the fact that there was so much focus on all the British Olympians so he shared the pressure with several elite athletes helped, and he clearly enjoyed the companionship and being part of a huge sporting event.
He looks very relaxed here when interviewed after the semi, so I think the experience of the Olympics has helped him enormously.

To be fair Nadal only does that when he wins a final. But I assume, as I didn't get to see the match, that his reaction was more measured and typical which I agree is a good sign.

I don't know. Gavin Rossdale is that most unpleasant fixture at any tennis event.

This really.
It wouldn't shock me if someone (seriously, not just in a hawkeye sense) started a thread stating that Alex Ferguson just cost Murray the US Open title and give us long and explained reasoning into why it is so.
Some people need to start just enjoying the tennis and not be spending so much time panicking about tiny little issues in their lives.

Any extravagant celebration may have looked silly since Berdych was challenging the last point. Well out it was, but worth a challenge, you can't take them home with you.
Add to that there was hordes of burly security men probably ready to manhandle Murray off the court if he celebrated for more than 10 seconds as they rushed to get the second match on.

On the other hand when we're not embarressing we can also be "gay", which appears to cover more or less anything we do that falls short of her standards.

I think that's true. We Dads seem to get some slack cut by our daughters; I think mostly we just don't fuss so much whereas girls and their Mums are simply incompatable on every level possible. It's understandable, as they mostly end up turning into their Mums anyway (which is another subject and a massive concern for all husbands).time please wrote:bogbrush wrote:Very wise of her. Sons are way easier. Even in monosyllabic mode they more or less just need food and the ocassional kick up the @r$e.
A friend told me once, when we had our first (a boy) that little boys are like puppies - they run around exitedly and so long as you play with them they are happy and enthusiastic. Little girls, he said, are basically miniature women and come ready equipped with all the complications of their larger versions.
Having two of each I know how wise those words were.

Re: Connery & Ferguson embarrass everyone but think its wonderful.
Yes there is that frightening realisation we all go through when we catch ourselves in the mirror, or hear ourselves speak when we just know the metamorphosis into one parent or the other has started. Its like we've been able to suppress the irresistable parental pull for many years but just when our guard is dropped, bang - our inherited DNA takes over and says "sorry, no more individuality...its time" and before we know it we're looking at Betterware catalogues, buying things in bulk and thinking about weedkiller plans for the garden 2 seasons in advance, etc.
I agree with the gender differences BB. Having 3 children (not 1 of each, lol) I get to see The Daily Politics show. 2 younger boys who like to knock 7 bells out of each other and an older teenage daughter who acts as ringmaster for the boys - either as umpire, negotiator or parental go-between. All roles come with their own parental price tag - I cut more deals on a daily basis at home than I ever do in business. But what never fails to impress me is the innate way they can play politics between family members...maybe grown up politicians are in fact still children? Appears so - Nick Clegg is fetal in my opinion.
Of course the ultimate reality check is when your kids start to not only notice but delight in telling you the traits you have that are similar to their grandparents. Then you really know Betterware Man has arrived

The true horror is in realising how many of my opinions have evolved towards my Dads. The issue there is that I have only really had one argument with my Dad; it began when I was 13 and is still going on.
Obviously I can't admit this business of the opinions to him.

Absolutely. Having opinions is not de rigeur with parents - and as you allude to over time your differing opinion moves innately in their direction. I suspect the early 'programming' we received as kids sits in our subconscious just waiting for the time to spring out again - and before we know it we shockingly catch ourselves nodding our head like a Churchill Dog in a car back window at our fathers opinions over the dinner table and furthermore even become aware we start to espouse them onto other people.
A Churchillian Canine example - manufacturing. Back in the late 80s/early 90s my father was adamant our loss of nationally owned large corporations was the single largest issue holding Britain back. As a young emergent university student I was all globally minded about it being market forces, inevitable softening of trade barriers and boundaries, etc...but then as I got older I started to agree with him that globalisation of business isnt necessarily the best foot forwards. Of course my father can now point to Europe, say "I told you so 20 years ago" and grins at me like a Cheshire Cat.
But in general its amazing how we cut our parents opinion slack we would never dream of giving other people...maybe because we realise they tend to be more right than wrong down the track.
Dont you just hate wisdom

Indeed; in my case though I never cut his opinions slack (nor him mine; to visualise the scene think me growing up with someone much more argumentative.... Add two brothers of mine in a small semi-detatched house that you can't swing a cat in and I have no idea how we co-existed there until the first left at 21) so now as I am older I'm stuck with adopting many of his mindsets but being utterly unable to admit this to him.lydian wrote:Absolutely. He is absolutely the most opinionated person I have ever met - and I know the humour value of that comment - and "I told you so" just wouldn't fully cover how he'd greet that sort of news.......
