US Open Final: ANDY MURRAY SEALS GLORY
First topic message reminder :
US OPEN ATP FINAL: Novak Djokovic (2) vs Andy Murray (4)
4 Times the Brit has reached the finals of a Grand Slam Major Championship. 4 Times Murray has left the stadium dejected, with only a runner's up plat to console him.
But this could be it. This time could be different. Maybe this time, Murray will finally seal glory and silence his doubters who have claimed that Murray isn't good enough at the highest level.
But it could all come crashing down.
There was indeed another man, by the name of Ivan Lendl, who lost his first 4 Grand Slams. He was also on his way to a fifth defeat, up against the great John McEnroe, 2 sets down and out of the match.
But, from nowhere, Lendl summoned inspiration. The French crowd were murmuring, the doubters were getting louder 'Ivan Lendl the man who couldn't win a slam' 'Ivan Lendl, the man who always lost in the finals.'
He shut them up.
Murray has another chance to do the same here, the parallel is uncanny. Lendl now works as Master Yoda mentoring the Young Jedi Andy Murray. Can Murray emulate his master?
The force it seems, is with Murray. Last year in 3 slams Andy Murray was stopped in the semi-final by Rafael Nadal. But now Nadal is injured.
In 3 of his 4 Grand Slams Finals so far, Murray has been out-hit by 17-time Grand Slam Champion Roger Federer. But the Swiss is out, slumping to a defeat inflicted by Tomas Berdych.
Only one obstacle remains: Novak Djokovic.
The two have been rivals since they were very young, even in the junior circuit. But now, the stakes are greater than ever. The scheduling arguably favours the underdog Murray, but Djokovic was quick in his dismissal of David Ferrer today.
And Djokovic is a physical beast.
This is judgement day. This is the day of destiny. Murray won the Olympic Gold medal, but now he could be on the verge of creating history, and becoming the first British male Grand Slam winner since Sir Fred Perry in 1936. Djokovic has won his last 27 matches on Hard Court Grand Slams. 27 matches.
That run could come to an end this Monday.

Say it and believe it - Britain, at long last, have a men's singles Grand Slam champion!
What a fantastic night for British sport. Well played Andy Murray.

Andy Murray grandslam champ finally it just sounds right. Poor nole he is just coming up a little bit short against his biggest rivals 3 grandslam finals 2 massive losses. Oh well he is not far off for two sets he played 2011 quality but in set 5 Andy finally took his legs. But he couldn't take his heart and effort. Good class in the celebration from murray.

We shall see.
The Brave Scot has exorcised his daemons and won his first Grand Slam trophy.
No longer will Andrew Murray be dogged and taunted by doubts about his grand slam winning pedigree.
Well played to the Scot on withstanding the bold charge by last year's champion and holding his nerve to triumph.

I think the wind undid Djokovic early on and the effort of battling it took a lot out of him. But Murray handled it better and was the stronger at the end...always a shame when someone has to lose these matches.

Generous reaction from Socal, actually there was nothing in it, they both won about the same number of points, and was it exactly the same number of games?

Fantastic - and he had to do it the hard way. He's now got wonderful memory reserves to call on when things go against him in a big match.
It's just the final piece in so many jigsaws - I'm delighted for him but it's very good for men's tennis:
a. first year of 4 separate slam winners since 2003 (Agassi, Ferrero, Federer, Roddick)
b. the top 4 are now all in the slam club along with JMDP
c. The ye #1 race has some real meaning and bit now.
d. Even one Andy slam winner going to be replaced by a new one.

Can't deny the man the fruits of his labor and efforts he deserves the glory, he deserves the distinction MFC, Andy Murray has done you guys really proud. After watching this match do you guys think tennis is still down in the dumps, albeit this was an error strewn match but these guys fought very strange winds tonight and still delivered some great stuff.

Although incidentally Murray's win means if Federer gets y/e no 1 it can't be overshadowed by another player having more slams than him.

It started off very scrappy but I'd put that down to the wind and the nerves. It gradually improved in quality as it went on and was a nail-biting match full of drama and many memorable rallies.

A very, very long shot. Unless he's predicting Murray to win the lion's share of the remaining tournament and Fed and Djoko to lose them, then it's next to impossible.

Re: US Open Final: ANDY MURRAY SEALS GLORY
I watched it with American commentary, which was pretty ordinary, but has to be better than Rusedski
I'm glad you liked Andy's reaction BB, but TBH I think it took a couple of seconds for him to actually realise he'd won. Watching the last point again, he points to say the ball's out and for a second looks like he's heading to the ball boy for the next point. Then it sinks in...
Absolutely thrilled for the man, did it the hard way, but played some great tennis in the last set to get over the line. Hopefully the first of many

Novak is my second favourite of the big guys for a reason, he's not only an unbelievable tennis player but he has tonnes of class.
But Andy Murray.... Grand slam champion!!!
76 years to the day since these shores had a major tennis winner. I hope finally the whole of Britain untites in support and pride at a marvellous sporting embassador for Britain.

That's it I can probably retire from Tennis commentary now. Britain has a male grand slam champion after 76 years.

nah it was always going to be error strewn with the wind, TBH not many players in the world could play 54 shot rallies with those sort of conditions. When the wind died down (early fourth set or thereabouts) it actually became a very good match I thought.

That is true.
I didn't support Murray to win just because it gives Fed a far higher chance of Year End No.1 (although that was part of the reason), I also felt it was his best shot and his reaction when he lost the Wimbledon final really endeared me to him and to face up to that loss and beat Federer on the same court just a month later -it showed me he had what it takes, so I'm pleased he went further and got the slam he's waited so long for.
The chances are that Djokovic can't reclaim the No.1 spot until probably the WTF unless he wins most the tournaments prior to it.

For the first time in my 50 and one third years. I'm utterly speechless!!!!!
A very mature victory as he had the courage to use the latter part of the 4th set to prepare for the 5th - and how it worked
Fully deserved, but well done to Nole and as I've stated several times these two can dominate for the next few years
It's very touching to think of these two who when they were in their early teens used to talk about days like this and imagine what it was like
