Shelvey's a great player.
I think he will be, but at the moment he isn't quite England standard for me.
In a way it shows the lack of depth we have at the moment, especially considering Spain have left Juan Mata out of there squad for the qualifiers

Obviously not yet, but he's not going to play, he's there for the experience. Hodgson's doing it the good way, calling in youngsters he'll use over the next few years and letting them get to grips with the England set up and how things, so when it it time for them to actually play they're not thrown into the deep end.
Better to put Shelvey in the squad who he'll want to use in the next few years than Carrick or Barry if he isn't going to use them at all anyway.

Shelvey's a great player.
Great? Come on.
He's good, and he's playing fairly well. His temperament is questionable at best and i've yet to see him change a game. I get giving youth a chance but unless he's gonna play him from the start against San Marino it's pointless.

Meant that he'll be a great player.
I won't repeat my post from before, but I think there is a lot more merit to selecting youth for places in the squad that won't get to play.

Yeah i saw that after i posted and i agree, but surely he's better inviting them to the setup rather than calling them into the squad. Would Shelvey not gain more experience spending time with the squad before joining the U21's?
I think against San Marino he should blood new players. I'd give Sterling a chance, but i don't see Shelvey as ready yet.

Yeah I agree, I wanna see the youngsters play, hence why I am happy no Rio in the squad. Is Caulker in the squad? I think he will be a top top CB in a few years

Yeah, Caulker and Lennon
I'd prefer Sterling over Lennon. I'd also argue that Lambert should get a chance.

The Lambert situation is akin to Holt last year, in my eyes.
He has been one of the better strikers this season though, but I just can't see him getting selected.

I'd take Sterling over Lennon also, but Caulker I think will be class.
I am for Lambert as well if he keeps up his form. I have never understood why we dont pick strikers who are scoring goals, Crouch falls into that boat as well. Scores around 15 goals a season consistently, but yet still is out of the squad

So true. I think Holt should have been selected last year, and if Lambert continues I dont see why he shouldnt be called up.

The problem with strikers like Holt, Lambert and Crouch is I imagine they'd give away a lot of fouls at international level.

He won't have near as good a season this season. Lambert's the wildcard, outside bet of a call up.

Not for me anyway.
I do like him. He's a unit. Not sure you need a unit in Intenational football. Maybe when your fighting relegation

They do in the Premier League. Holt gave away the most in the league last year I think. Already has 17 this year.
But I think it is part of there overall game, and I don't expect many defenders at international level would have faced these types before. Also they do draw a lot of fouls for the team as well.
Lambert I think is a very clever player, especially the way he drifts onto the full back for crosses, to create a mismatch

You have a good point there, I'm looking at it if we were selecting on goal scoring alone. I'm fully in agreement that those you listed are a much better fit for England.
