The decision was made more in light of discussion on the board being taken away by the chat box, rather than the behaviour on the chatbox.

Which is quite frankly rubbish.
Less than 1% of people on the site use the chatbox. It hardly takes away from discussion. Seems to me someone has a dislike for it, has been itching to get rid of it, and now has a chance to make it a scapegoat.

Exactly. Couldn't have put it better myself. Most of what I say ends up on the board also.

I can guarantee it won't make me post on other areas of the site. Like someone else said, it's more likely to force me into a different method of IM, such as Facebook.
I agree with Dave. Was that Marinus Van Der Lubbe i saw outside the Chatbox with a box of mathes the other night?

I'm sorry but I can see the logic for some unpopular decisions, but theres very little in this decision. There are a few more homepages that seem to encompass more general chat that would need to be closed also.

Agreed, also looking at the posts in the International section of Football less than 10 posts were there from 7:30-9:45
I think that the box stimulates instant reactions from people regarding these events and those I feel are needed. Put the box on for the next qualifying matches and see how many people discuss sport in the box, heck I guess at least 40% of those in the box would be watching the game live. If people say that it detracts from talking about sport then I call BS on that. The chatbox is essentially the 606V2 Pub and in all pubs you get the occational fight but most of the chat is nice, friendly and good. The only occations where I remember stuff happening that was bad was stuff involving me looking at it the wrong way or me being a complete asshat at the time.
I want the 606V2 Pub to stay open, I wanna eat my invisible pork scratchings, I wanna enjoy the sports that its on for and occationally get into a fist fight when the bar staff ( mods / admins) are not looking! I wanna enjoy the banter it brings, the different opinions and different people who walk through its merry doors. Shutting it down will not help in my opinion.

Re: Chatbox
This only a scapegoat due to people apparently not pressing the banner ads and getting revenue for the site. Which I said at the time was absurd because turning chat box off doesn't make people click on the banners.
So don't give us the "woooo bad stuff been happening on chatbox" rubbish.
Plus and I said it a few nights ago, if you want to make revenue then you don't use CPC banners on the forum.
Now if you don't mind, ebbsfleet have put in a shocking first half performance, and I have a greasy burger to eat.

Lets put the cards on the table. Adam said on chatbox two nights ago that chatbox took general chat away from the boards. He said that it stopped people talking on the threads and potentially pressing the banners. Thus creating money and stopping the admins putting their hand in their pocket to pay for the forum.
thats the long and short of it. Others were on that night that saw what was said.. Thats why the chatbox is now banned until they see fit.

Re: Chatbox
Seems to be the case.
It's a decision completely bereft of logic, and the tone we were told it in was well along the lines of "it's my site, I can do what I want". Those may not have been the actual words used, but those there can verify the tone.
Well, Adam, you do great work for the site, excellent podcasts - but it's not YOUR site. It's OUR site. Every single member on here's site. From the founders to the newbies - all of us.

Re: Chatbox
It's not anybody pulling rank, every admin who has been involved with the, discussion was in agreement of the decision to trial a period without the box. It's felt that discussion on the box rather than threads not only prevents other areas/topics being viewed, but that there is no record for future discussion. The last point is obviously more related to after match discussion rather than updates, it may be that we need to find a way to strike a balance.
As I said this is a temporary decision atm with the support of the whole team.

Re: Chatbox
Well that conflicts with what we were told.
"I have told the other admins not to turn on the box", or words to that affect. Again, those who were on Chatbox on Thursday will verify this.
Quite a Quantum Leap from behaviour to that, Sam Beckett would be proud.

Does it have any support from outside of "the team"?
Because if there is not, then this situation begins to sound dangerously like Dave's point above.

Was it ever appropriate to open up this discussion to outside your little band of which only 1 really frequents the box that much.
From 8 to 9.45 yesterday you had 10 posts in the thread.
Still waiting for a proper explanation (and I still suspect despite half hearted appeals to the contrary theres only 1 person who can provide a real one)

Let's have a Case Study.
It's Sunday Night, its NFL time.
There is talk of NFL on the box.
There is also a pretty detailed thread in the American Football section.
Many frequent both.
Does the Chatbox harm the thread?
No it doesn't!

Dave, I don't know what was said on the box but Adam raised the issue with admin and all responses were positive. The admin section is a democracy...as much as everyone believes Adam to be a Machiavellian dictator!
Demon the decision was reached by the admims, we have taken on board the points in this thread and will continue to listen to anyone else making constructive points...admin, mods or posters.

Re: Chatbox
Yes it does, to an outsider when they look over the site do they see the remains of the chatbox days after the event, do they think they can join in with the conversation that is on a thread or one they can no longer see on a chatbox?
Simply put chat boxes destroy forums, I've been a part of the very same one that Crimey is mentioning, Kayfabe as well, a thriving community where there was lots of threads every day, they trialled the chatbox and within a few months it died a death.

Someone didn't like the chatbox. They've been itching to get rid of it. Now we have a chance to make it a scapegoat........and voila!
For all this hoo-ha over a box wrecking this place, it looks pretty thriving to me, where all tastes are catered for!
Now, I'm going out for a drive.

Because if you were all instead posting on a thread then it would show to everyone else a thriving community rather than one where nothing is happening on the site due to everything taking place in a temporary environment.

I don't think for one second that this forum is in any danger of dying. There was over 1000 people logged in at the same time the other day. And chatbox isn't a new thing. It's positively thriving.
And the order may not have come from Adam alone, but the decision has clearly been taken with no consultation outside of the corridor of power. So you're right, Adam isn't a dictator, of course he isn't, but this decision made by a small collective bears the hallmark of one

Of the 4.5k users (not all are active I accept) probably less than 1% use the box regularly.
And there were literally 10 posts on the thread last night during the England game, and a couple more when you include Scotland and Wales' extra 15 mins. Did a lop sided population that strongly features users interested in Rugby and Wrestling come into consideration?

Incorrect Dave, I'm an advocate for the chat box when it's used correctly, but it wasn't, it's for live events to discuss the live events. Instead it's become a chit chat amongst an insular group. It should be used in future but not for every single night as a local.

5-6 people is a pitiful sample size and would rightfully be laughed at in any serious context.
The decision makes 0 sense unless the few people that populated the chat were supposed to make up 90% of the discussion on underused boards

To take Dave's lead, a case study.
Someone visits v2 for the first time following a big event.
They look in the relevant section for a discusion thread, they don't find one as it was discussed in the chatbox.
They don't feel that v2 is a site that discuses events they're interested in and never post.
