Jim Leyland to be back for an 8th season with the Tigers.
And James Shields reported to be re-upping with the Rays.
Lots of free agents being declared this week, quantity so far rather than quality!

I see Chicago didn't re-up on Youkilis . . . . .
And reports that the Angels have Haren and Santana on the trading block - would think the Yanks would love to add Danny Haren.

Slightly surprised about Haren, Thought the Angels would have wanted him for next year, only thing I can think off is that want someone big so don't want his wages on the bill. Same with Youkilis as well.

Rafael Soriano now a free agent, so the Yanks had better be sure that Rivera's ready to return; not sure what plan B would be.

tiger,
Unlike other teams, the Yankees have deep enough pockets to rent someone at exhorbitant cost if absolutely necessary.
In other news:
~Mike Redmond named as Miami manager.
~The always eccentric, and ultimately a coke head, Pascual Perez killed in the Dominican, allegedly during an attempted robbery, 21 years after his last MLB pitching gig. Had some good years when he was on the straight and narrow.

I know that Kiwi, but surprised that they have let/he's decided to get rid of Soriano who I thought did a decent job. I also thought that the Yankees are trying to cut there wage bill this year, but will have to wait and see. I still feel that if anyone could/do come in with an offer for A-Rod, that he will go.
Atlanta have bought back Jordan Schafer on waivers from Houston.

Ortiz close to resigning for the Red Sox - after reports that Texas had made him an offer. Good, slow motion on the basepaths.
And the Angels and Cubs close to a deal sending Danny Haren to Chicago for pitcher Marmol (who?), but apparently that fell through - Haren now a free agent.
Yanks made qualifying offers of $13.3M each to Soriano, Swisher and Kuroda. Imagine they'll keep fingers crossed that Kuroda re-signs, ambivalent about the other two.

Hopefully it will help Toronto to start to realise their potential (hate that word, euphemism for underperformance), but this is a total nonsense. Bud Selig should be locked away to protect MLB, cities and fans from his manipulative ways.

Great deal for Detroit (it's pending a physical that's all), he is just what the Tigers need, and will help them no end.
I can't help feeling that should that Miami Toronto trade go through that it would suit both clubs, Miami get a good mix of up & coming decent players, and a big chunk off there wage bill. Toronto get some experience to help there young team.

Re: after Season news 2012
tiger,
The Miami salary dump has received a shocking press here in the States, not surprisingly. There's a "good faith" component of owning a sports franchise and the Miami Marlins owners seem to violate it at every turn.
Who's going to watch them next year in the brand new stadium that the tax-payer footed the bill for?
Enterprises like this are meant to create economic revitalisation, not be a cash sink.
Don't be surprised to see the Blue Jays trade at least one of their acquisitions . . . . .

Kiwi
Are the Miami owners that bad? Has Miami ever taken to baseball? (these are genuine questions).
From what I remember baseball never really took off there, even after there world series wins, thought that could because they played at the Dolphins stadium that was way to big, for them. I sort of feel that in what is a tight division this could be the way to go, bringing in talented young players eager & hungry to prove themselves, bit like the Rays & Orioles

tiger,
Yes!
and
No!
Only time will tell with the fish, but it would be very surprising if any remotely engaged Commissioner would permit what superficially appears to be looting of the Miami tax-payer.
Loria was once the owner of the Montreal Expos and is largely thought to have bought the team with the sole intention of relocating it - in the end it went to Washington.
"Fool me once, shame on you", etc, etc, and in this case Miami and Bud Selig are the fools.
So Loria appears to be a conniving, manipulative operator. But why? And I'm not sure I know the answer to that.

The 12 player trade between the Toronto Blue Jays and Miami Marlins is now offical, after the baseball commissioner has ratified it.
Toronto get, shortstop Jose Reyes, Catcher John Buck, Fielder Emilio Bonifacio and pitchers Josh Johnson & Mark Buehrle.
Miami get, shortstop Yunel Escobar, Infielder Adeiny Hechavarria, back up catcher Jeff Mathis, outfielder Jake Marisnick and pitchers Henderson Alvarez, Justin Nicolino & Anthony Desclafani.
Toronto are also beloved to be getting about $4 million to help compensate for the almost $165 million increase in there salary bill from this deal. Given that they have also signed Izturis and are reportedly close to signing Cadrera, they are going to have one hell of a wage bill in Toronto.

Evan Longeria has signed a contract extension to stay with the Tampa Bay Rays through till the end of 2022 season, with an option for 2023. His contract stays the same till the end of the original one, then he earns $100 million for his new one.
Considering that he's a quality batsman, and what he means to the Rays Club, I think that extending his contract is a very wise move by the Rays.

At last something to cheer about. Not sure about the Gibbons bit but seems like he's happy to be in Toronto (unlike Farrell who couldn't wait to get out).
Seems like the Jays have a surplus of catchers. So JPA and/or Buck may be moved.

teassoc, tiger,
Is 2013 going to be the year for the Blue Jays?
Interesting article about Mark Buerle in the Globe and Mail, suggesting he might have to live in Buffalo and commute in order to keep his pit-bull!
Talking of catchers, the Skanks will miss Russell Martin, his competitiveness and nous - a big hole for someone to fill.
Big move by the Braves to pick up Upton, a bit of a gamble I'd think.
And a helluva commitment to David Wright by the Mutts, Dickey now wondering when it's going to be his turn.
Owners Meetings starting Sunday . . . . . . .

Re: after Season news 2012
I actually think 2013 will be the Tribes year. Upton is a gamble, but the signing of Laird & Waldren strengthens them considerably, they already were a decent side that are now good.
I think Toronto have actually made to many signings, and will take a year's find there best side/rotation,, I think that 2014 is more the season that we see Toronto making big moves in the league.
The Martin move is interesting, by his own standards he was terrible last year, maybe this will regenerate him, The Yankees now do have a hole to fill which will be interesting to see who they go with, Whiteside or will they bring in someone else.
I'm nit sure about the Wright Mets thing. Whilst there's no denying what he done there, or that he is that teams franchise player, I can't help feeling that they've tied alot of money into 1 player when they need quite a few, and with Dickey also now looking for big bucks, that they are almost sealing themselves in the market. Maybe now was the time to trade Wright?
Monday will be interesting, as there are quite a few teams that have not made any big moves yet, and only one of the big free agents has moved, so Sunday could be when we see big things happening.

Re: after Season news 2012
The Tampa Bay Rays have traded pitcher Burke Badenhop to the Milwaukee Brewers for minor league outfielder Raul Mondesi Jr.
And Jonny Gomes has now completed his 2 year $10 million contract, Move to the Boston Red Soxs.
Sorry Kiwi, I forgot to add that part of Toronto's biggest problem is the division. The Yankees, whilst losing Martin is big, other than that are no weaker than last year, Tampa are a good side that's always there or there abouts. It's hard to imagine the Red Soxs being as bad as they were last year. Baltimore are a wild card in that will they continue with the massive progress of last year, or was that a one off and they'll return to form. Whilst I think Tornoto are building a good side, I'm not sure that they're better than a couple of those sides.

Re: after Season news 2012
tiger,
Would say that, with good fortune, the Blue Jays could easily challenge New York and Tampa; Orioles to be competitive again but can't see the Red Sox doing anything unless they orchestrate some massive trades - a decent rotation will only take you so far, and Elsbury and Pedroia would need career years (and they've already had them!) to make up for weaknesses elsewhere.
Speculation this morning that Alex Rodriguez will need hip surgery before the season. Eric Chavez's value just soared! Or will they be forced into the trade market?

Now we have reports of Mike Napoli signing a 3-year contract with the Red Sox, and Loney signing for Tampa . . . . . .

The Jays would have been a lot more competitive if they hadn't lost 3 starters in the space of a week or so. The prospects they then brought up were no match to those sidelined.
Their line-up for next season looks a whole lot better but they need to stay healthy. Not sure about their supposed ace, Romero, but hopefully his end of season surgery will have sorted him out.
It also remains to be seen whether they have any more trades to pull off. I wouldn't be surprised to see another starting pitcher (from the Mets?) for JPA and one other (Lind?).
Unlike other seasons, I expect the Jays to have a very good chance of making the play-offs.
