best and worst commentators Empty best and worst commentators

'Evening all'.

Thoughts please on you favourite and worst commentators.

For the worst I would go mainly with itv ones. Jim beglin and Andy Townsend being the most annoying I feel. David pleat is also in this bracket but recently I have been introduced to a drinking game for when he gets players names wrong so now I find him useless but amusing.

Whilst we are on it how about pundits. Southgate I feel was a terrible commentator but a very good pundit

I like Roy Keane, Gary Neville, Martin Keown and Lee Dixon as pundits.

Neville is also good as a co-commentator.

The worst commentators for me, are, Lawrenson and the other BBC guy, who commentated during the euro's. Both smug know it all's.

I don't actually mind Townsend or Tyldesley although the latter can be a tad biased.

I do miss Andy Gray though. He said the obvious at times but was always passionate.

Martin Tyler is clearly for me the best commentator at the moment. He is so much better than any of the play by play guys. Can't stand Alan Parry.

I also miss Andy Gray, his partnership with Tyler was the best out there. Gary Neville is alright but the likes of Quinn and Le Tissier aren't good enough.

Without doubt the worst ever commentator is Archie McPherson. In fact any commentator from Scotland is rubbish.
Stuart Hall makes me laugh as a reporter.

For a commentator , i often think knowledge of the game can be a hindrance. You want to leave all the "analysis" to a co-commentator or the studio guests.

Take John Motson, superb commentator, but any time ive heard him interviewed, i dont think he has a good knowledge of the game.

As for the studio pundits, Sky dont want their puindits to be good analysts at all, they prefer some fella who preferably played for both teams in action, or an injured player from one of the teams. Ryan Giggs was on for a Wales match once - his analysis was shocking. Dwight Yorke is another shocker.

There is also a tendancy on Sky not to highlight certain players poor performances, unless it is conduct related.
This can often be put down to ex or current players being hopelessly biased..........not a good starting point for a pundit. I recall Darren Fletcher being excused from answering any acquard Suarez questions last year........just what you want in a pundit!!

In ireland, John Giles is peerless.

Niall Quinn is awful, even if the ref makes a howler he says it was the right decision.

Couldn't agree more. By far the most annoying commentator I can remember.

Clive Tyldsely, John Motson, Andy Townsend are all atrocious one eyed morons. David Provan is also useless.

Agreed on Martin Tyler being the best, one i used to like but i don't know who he works for now was Peter Brackley. He was great back in the days of Football Italia.

I know a lot don't like him, but I quite like Jonathan Pearce as well as Martin Tyler.

The worst pundit has got to be Emmanuel Adebayor in BBC's world cup coverage.

To be honest, I've started to dislike most pundits.

Presenters - Linekar and Chiles in equal measure make my blood boil, can't stand the pair of them.

Pundits - Shearer, Souness, Crooks, Yorke and Le Tissier are awful. Do like Seedorf, Neville, Dixon, Wilkins among others.

Commentators - Motson drives me mental along with Townsend - always liked Pearce and Tyler. Thank god Gray is gone, he was the worst and most biased commentator / pundit I have ever seen, would literally salavate over 'Stevie G'. Good riddance.

Andy Gray always loved the top players. I get the feeling he thought he could relate to them, because he considered himself to be on their level back in his day

I couldn't stand Andy Gray. I watched a re-run of the 2005 League Cup final last week and he just didn't shut up. Sometimes it's best to let the action speak for itself, especially during the umpteenth replay. There is passion and there is overkill. If that guy was chocolate he'd eat himself.

Garth crooks is shocking. He is always so aggressive and when you watch match of the day after having seen final score you wonder what game he has been watching.

Plus I love stats as much as the next person but when motty gets on to them he misses mostof the action. Lawrenson on five live is much better than when he is on tv. He's a lot funnier in the radio

Laugh I know!! What tense does he speak in? He talks about the match in the past tense but reacts to seeing them live. Plus he has a stupid voice.

Other poor commentators include Niall Quinn, who I've noticed is a teensy bit biased at times, Jonathan Legard and Stephen Craigan.

Roy Keane tends to be poor in the general sense of a pundit but gold in the comedy stakes as he usually starts debate, whether it being with a person in the room or someone on the pitch he has offended.

G Nev also seems to have swung a lot of peoples opinion of him around a fair bit. With the exception of the Torres orgasm he does come across as very clued up.

I love Clive Tyldesley and Andy Townsend when they commentate on England, their so biased towards England...just the way it should be! I can't stand Pearce and Lawrenson on the BBC. Overall, Martin Tyler is probably the best.

That would be former Republic of Ireland international Andy Townsend. Born in Maidstone and raised in Bexley (Irish granny).

Yep. The same man that struggles to refer to England as 'they' and not 'we'.

I haven't listened to Durham for a couple of years now. Is he still as annoying as ever? Drivetime was never the same after Mike Parry left. Legend that guy if not a little nuts!
