SOB or Ferris?
SOB Vs Ferris
Without this turning into a bitter provincial dispute, I've always wondered about this one.
A first glance, O'Brien and Ferris are very similar players. And for the most part, they are. This has contributed to the imbalance in the Irish back row.
And despite both players being sidelined with injury currently, I thought I'd go about trying to compare the two.
Attack: Both are good ball carriers - but SOB has to be ahead in this regard, being that bit quicker as well. They both also have decent hands and offloading skills. This one goes to O'Brien.
Defence: SOB isn't somebody you'd like to run into, but I've never seen Fez miss a tackle. Ferris ties it up.
Breakdown: Being the pacier player, O'Brien gets to the ruck fractionally earlier and this is represented by his ability to play open side. O'Brien has improved his game here in the last year or so.
Set pieces: Neither offer an significant presence in line outs or scrums.
For my money's worth, they are on roughly the same level but the major advantage SOB has is not being made of glass a la Ferris. Arguably Ferris is a more consistent performer but O'Brien can be hot on his day, although some may say being in a team like Leinster helps.

Re: SOB Vs Ferris
They are both very good and we are lucky to have them. 1F only has the problem of being injured quite a bit but with his style of play it's not really that surprising it can be hard to recover fully from injuries when you play as high intensity as he does. At 6 I'd have Steven at 7 or 8 i'd have O'Brien
