Davis Cup Final
Since no one created this thread.......thought I would create one
Nadal - Rosol on this quick surface would have been a pre match classic but nevertheless this should be keenly fought contest with the potential to go to a deciding fifth rubber. The classic here would definitely be Berdych - Ferrer.
What do the esteemed tennis enthusiasts of 606 v2 reckon this to be?

Re: Davis Cup Final
I wouldn´t consider a match between Ferrer and Berdych necessarily a classic.
David is up on H 2 H against Berdych.. Daveed is playing the tennis of his life at the moment and has a good record against tall big servers. And Berdych will doubtless do what he does best.... choke !!!! Spain should win the DC their doubles pair Lopez & Granollers have just won the APT Tour. Almagro is a bit flakey and will be the weak link for Spain But I give it to Spain

Berdbrain did in Almugro in 5. If he'd have lost that it would have been curtains. Any idea who plays with (presumably) Stepanek in the doubles?

Rosol I believe !!!!!not sure.
Trouble with Almagro .. he has ability, fantastic serve and backhand but like birdy prone to choking. cant play the big points.... shame he lost but my money is still on Spain !!

Re: Davis Cup Final
Almagro is good on lesser stages...gets his points from 250s in the main. When it comes to Masters, Slams or DC he simply can't reflect his ranking - only playing vs Nadal seemingly inspires him to play well at RG or clay Masters.
By the way, presume it'll be Granola/Lopez in doubles...surely they'll be favourite to win that.
BUT...the return rubbers could be interesting....Berdy has a very decent chance vs Ferrer, and you can bet Almagro will hate taking Mr Awkward-to-Play, Stepanek. So Czech Rep still have very really chance of snatching this.

Yep, they'll be faves.
Berdy does have home advantage, plus DC can elevate players - look at Verdasco a couple of years back. It's very hard to predict DC matches, they seem to bring out different elements vs ordinary ATP matches.

Not sure David alone can win it now, as Czechs need just 1 more win after their fantastic double win today, David might pull one back so its left to Mugro to pull the other one which he is more than capable of, but I have sneaky feeling Berdych will win it for them tomorrow against Daveed.

Re: Davis Cup Final
mmm not so sure ic Daveed has all the incentive now and after the year he has had he will put all his heart and soul into that game and then some.
However disappointing that the pair didn´t play as well as they should have done albeit that the Czechs must be pretty desperate to have to play Bertdy in all three .. Still Spain has had a good innings and as they say "you cant win em all"

I want Spain to win, and Daveed will win Berdy on most occasions, but right now Berdy is inspired and he knows once in a lifetime opportunity has come his way and he wants to achieve what the GOAT haven't achieved thats winning Davis Cup.
I never like Berdy as a player and see him as a guy who wins just by power and hence would love to see Spain lift the trophy but I don't think so it be the result, lets see.

It was doubles tennis at its very best earlier today. I'd urge anyone who didn't see it live to try & catch the edited highlights on Eurosport

I actually felt Verdasco should have played this tie........his big booming game is made for this slick and quick surface. He might have had a better chance to beat Berdych.
Probably the Spanish camp felt that he might not have had the match practice for such a big occasion.........Not sure how many of you'll agree with me!!!!!

Re: Davis Cup Final
No definitely not ... sadly Verdasco is way off form still recovering from injury I think. An on form Nando is a joy to behold but something tells me you might not see him in that form for some while if ever. But the Spanish Armada are much happier on clay and the Czechs were obviously well aware of that. I still have my hope pinned on Daveed.... and Nico can play really well on a good day... Just hope tomorrow is one of them
They obviously miss Rafa (but shouldn´t say that I suppose )

bird was 18 in 2004 (before he burst onto the scene) and that was early in the rounds, 09 was the final but away to spain, on clay, against rafa = no chance.
2011 the czechs lost to Kazakhstan in the first round, so not sure where you got that from.
i think maybe he is saying this is a once in a lifetime chance to play spain, in the final, at home, without rafa!!!

Re: Davis Cup Final
And it's going to the fifth rubber - Almagro v Stepanek.
Whilst Berdy must have been somewhat tired, Ferrer's consistency this year has been mightily impressive and I hope it carries over to 2013. I think Stepanek is going to need to find some inspired tennis to get past Almagro

Why is it that all the dodgy doping doctors are from Spain?

Re: Davis Cup Final
On a fast HC you'd think Spain would have gone for Lopez rather than Le-Mug, who right now is living up to his billing.
If anyone has been watching these matches then they'll attest to how good the tennis has been, particularly the Berdych-Mug match.
Most of the rallies are baseline, many of them prolonged. It just destroys Socal's thesis that faster courts won't allow for rallies and that they immediately mean a return to the 'serve and volley fests' of the nineties.
Even this match is full of long rallies despite one of the protagonists being primarily a serve and volleyer. A great mixture of points. Much better than the to me-to you tennis of the snail pace courts.

2 sets to 1 now, but Stepanek has got a break advantage in the fourth, can he use the crowd and momentum to seal his biggest win?

So the Czechs have won both the Davis and Fed Cups. At least one country has their tennis in a good place for men and women.

Shame I forgot about this until slightly too late. Looks like a good contest. A good team performance with Berdych and Stepanek both with 2 wins and a defeat. A really sad day for Almagro with 2 defeats, while Ferrer posted 2 impressive wins.

Re: Davis Cup Final
picking Almagro on a fast indoor HC was a bizarre move by Spain IMO, though had he beaten Berdych it would have been a masterstroke. Can't help but feel Feliciano Lopez or Verdasco would have been better options?

Thats what Stepha reflected on his on court interview.
I had a sneaky feeling Czech will pull it off but least expected Stepha to win the final tie, well done CR team.

Further evidence of how even a veteran who can volley kills a modern player when they play on a decent fast court.
And plenty of rallies; fast courts don't mean serve domination.

Why they didn't play Lopez in doubles or singles over Almagro I'll never know...the guys game is tailor made to faster courts. Almagro has never shown cojones in big events.
