Quade Cooper quits the Wallabies
From the Sydney Morning Herald:
http://www.smh.com.au/rugby-union/australia-rugby/quade-cooper-quits-the-wallabies-report-20121119-29m36.html
"Controversial Wallabies flyhalf Quade Cooper has reportedly quit Australian rugby.
According to Channel Nine, Cooper has quit the ARU and the Wallabies and may now pursue a rugby career overseas or switch to rugby league.
The move comes after he was offered an incentive-only based contract by the ARU."
Hope this is just a hissy although Channel 9 don't usually take a flyer on things like this.
The Wallabies need him and it would be a shame not to see him in Wallaby gold again.

If he does quit the Wallabies for real, I wonder if he will consider playing in Europe for a while?

Re: Quade Cooper quits the Wallabies
I am not a Cooper fan by any means. I think he is 50% half-crazy. But as a Saints supporter, I would sign him right away. Crazy or not, we need an out half badly. If Cooper can help Reds win a Super 15 trophy, he can help Saints. And if Cooper gets out of control Tiny can sit on him.

The guy is an entertainer and when he's on form even the ABs can't handle him. Love to see him in Heineken Cup.

Re: Quade Cooper quits the Wallabies
No surprise the Wallabies were only willing to offer him an incentive based contract. He is a loose cannon and although he is an exciting player to watch at club level he consistently comes up short at international level. He also demonstarated that he thinks he is bigger than the management with some stupid tweets earlier in the year and therefore had it coming.

Sadly I think that the knee injury has taken a much bigger toll than has been revealed. Would have loved to see him have a go at League.

Re: Quade Cooper quits the Wallabies
Sensational player (at Super Rugby level at least) on his day, but was always erratic. Still erratic to me so why people bemoan it as a big loss I do not know. I see it as a slight loss. Barnes is still probably their best fly-half but Deans thinks differently, plus they have the non-erratic O'Connor to come back. The ARU obviously wanted to test his loyalty after his outbursts/toy-throwing and now perhaps they see that they may be better off without him?

A real shame if true as he's an entertainer. The guy can make stupid decisions both on and off the field no doubt but does spectacular things as well.
Could make a lot of money in France given the way he plays!

Can't see him in league at all with all that marking.
Plus his defence (or lack of it) would be targeted big time.
He's a bit of a street boy from Tokoroa turned prima donna and I reckon he doesnt like the space he's in at the moment.
Too risky for a large contract and I reckon the kness knocked his confidence for good.

Does it even affect the Wallabies? Most times I've seen him play he's been bullied and jeered out the game & Barnes & Beale seem quite capable of playing flyhalf.

Also depends on the time of day, which hemisphere one is in (just as water goes down the drain clockwise or anticlockwise) and sunspot activity.AlastairW wrote:LondonTiger wrote:AlastairW wrote:doctor_grey wrote:I am not a Cooper fan by any means. I think he is 50% half-crazy.

And, that in a nutshell, is the problem. If he was consistently 30% crazy, he could be managed. But this variability makes him frustrating. When playing under control, he can be truly excellent.

Half of me wants to see Quade play league to watch him get smashed. The other half wants to see him in the boxing ring to see him get smashed. I don't mean really smashed like hurt or injured, but you know, just roughed up a bit to teach him a lesson in humility.

I ave spoken to a number of Ozzies, they reckon he won't change or be learning any lessons in humility. They say he has been like this since he was a boy.ebop wrote:Half of me wants to see Quade play league to watch him get smashed. You bring a bit of it on yourself, where have you actually heard that "Cooper quits"?, apart from on a Sydney television channel, which in turn has been denied by the ARU.

The thread was on Stuff as well, talk of going League, and Boxing smacks of SBW,do they have the same Agent?
Super Rugby seems out Top14 or Japan would certainly be an option what ever you think of him as a man.
He is a good if sometimes erratic player, Carlos Spencer was one of the most
gifted players ever.He was erratic at time s too BUT he came North and was good and loyal member of his club.
He stayed with it when it was demoted and promoted again Cooper may well do the same.
It could be like Giteau he has problems with Deans style as Coach ,and if your face does`nt fit.?
Like Merthens and Cullen with Mitchell maybe the team suffers too?

It's actually been reported quite widely Laurie although as you say there's never any guidance as to who's copying whom.aucklandlaurie wrote:

For what it's worth, my boys in Brisbane who are very close to the Reds have also heard that this is a Real Thing.

Re: Quade Cooper quits the Wallabies
I think it's a real shame if we lose him. Whatever he is or isn't, people show up to watch him and kids absolutely love the guy. He's massively valuable to the Reds. He's the only rugby player in Oz that captures people's attention in the same way players like Inglis, Slater, Franklin, Ablett, Judd do (names that are not exactly Messi, Ronaldo or Peter Crouch I admit, but trust me, here they're bigger than the big pineapple, prawn and banana combined). He has to be worth more to Oz rugby than the $300 grand they could have paid. Even then they still have a choice whether or not they pick him. He'd be a handy enough 5th choice 10 to have up our sleeve.
Sport in Oz is always a bit of a circus anyway. The AFL and NRL have swarms of journos reporting every little event and making it into the days big story, and as ridiculous as it can be, it means they're always front and centre when you open the paper. Rugby in Oz being desperate to fly under the trouble radar may win over mums, but it won't win over many new players as I don't think they are paying much attention to us.
Disappointing I think, but life goes on. No one's bigger than the game etc etc etc.
