Ospreys vs Cardiff Blues - Friday 19.05
Ospreys have Moldovan front-rower Dmitri Arhip on the replacements bench for Friday night's RaboDirect clash with Cardiff Blues at the Liberty Stadium. Arhip will make his regional debut if he comes on.
Arhip has arrived as the Ospreys find themselves in the midst of a prop crisis. They are without injured trio of tight-heads, Adam Jones, Aaron Jarvis and Joe Rees, who are all out injured.. The 23-year-old had signed an initial deal with the Welsh region until the end of the season, subject to Arhip obtaining a work permit. Arhip, capped 19-times by Moldova, has an option to extend his stay with the Pro12 champions for a further year.
Head coach Steve Tandy said the region will be recruiting further cover for injured props.
"It's a high priority for us to get someone in for Heineken Cup time," he said. "The boys are working behind the scenes trying to get a couple of people in which we will need to cover us through the Heineken Cup and a hectic Christmas period."
Ospreys have won their last four matches against fellow Welsh regions, and have lost only once at home to such a side since 2007.
The region are unbeaten at Liberty Stadium since Glasgow Warriors were the visitors on 14 September.
The Blues ended a four game losing run in the Pro12 with their 14-7 victory over Zebre in Italy last Sunday.
The Blues only win over a rival Welsh region in their last seven encounters was 16-5 at the Dragons on 15 September.
Ospreys are unbeaten in their last four fixtures with the Blues in all competitions, while the Cardiff-based outfit have triumphed just once on Ospreys soil since the regions were formed - 28-9 at Liberty Stadium on 22 December 2005.
"Since the start of the season we have got better week in week out but we have not had the rewards on the scoreboard, which is the most important thing, as obviously we want to win every game," said Cardiff Blues Director of Rugby Phil Davies.
"We were very unlucky against Munster, but had a good win against Wasps and played well against the Scarlets, a little ill discipline cost us the game.
"We did end that game with a bonus point meaning we finished the LV campaign in joint top of the group, which is pleasing.
"We have said since the start of the season that we are in transition and we have a lot of young players coming through.
"What we have done over the last few months, although it has been painful at times with some of the results, is create some depth and given a lot of players opportunities.
"We have given opportunities to twelve or fourteen players many of whom are under the age of 22."

Chris Czekaj (foot), Tom Davies (knee), Dan Fish (shoulder) and, Tom James (toe) are all unavailable due to injury, while Jamie Roberts, Leigh Halfpenny, Alex Cuthbert, Harry Robinson, Scott Andrews, Bradley Davies, Sam Warburton, Lou Reed are with the Wales squad.
TEAMS
Ospreys
15 Richard Fussell
14 Ross Jones
13 Tom Isaacs
12 Andrew Bishop
11 Eli Walker
10 Matthew Morgan
9 Kahn Fotuali'i (Capt)
1 Duncan Jones
2 Scott Baldwin
3 Cai Griffiths
4 Ian Gough
5 James King
6 George Stowers
7 Sam Lewis
8 Joe Bearman
REPLACEMENTS
16 Matthew Dwyer
17 Marc Thomas
18 Dmitri Arhip
19 Lloyd Peers
20 Morgan Allen
21 Rhys Webb
22 Sam Davies
23 Jonathan Spratt
Cardiff Blues: Rhys Patchell, Tom Williams, Gavin Evans, Dafydd Hewitt, Owen Williams, Ceri Sweeney, Lloyd Williams; Sam Hobbs, Marc Breeze, Taufa'ao Filise, Michael Paterson, James Down, Rory Watts-Jones, Josh Navidi (c), Robin Copeland.
Replacements: Andi Kyriacou, Nathan Trevett, Benoit Bourrust, Macauley Cook, Andries Pretorius, Lewis Jones, Gareth Davies, Jason Tovey
Referee: Leighton Hodges (WRU)
Assistant Referees: Gwyn Morris, Wayne Davies (both WRU)
Citing Commissioner: Richard Gwynn (WRU)
TMO: Paul Adams (WRU)
.................
So the Blues have 4 flyhalves in the 23. I'm surprised not to see Patchell at 12, but with Fish injured he is moved to cover FB while Tovey covers 15 from the bench and Davies 10 and 12.
Predictions?
Ospreys to win with home advantage I expect, but I expect a fairly close affair with internationals away.

That's a strong O's team, with plenty of experience. A good kicking game from Sweeney and Patchell could work though

Re: Ospreys vs Cardiff Blues - Friday 19.05
To be fair this match should have been moved somewhere else int he fixture list, after allthis is meant to be a proper welsh derby match, yet the sides look more like LV= teams (no disrespect).
It should be interesting though, with the Dragons just a few points behind them (and playing in Treviso at the weekend) and the Ospreys are just a few points infront of them, this match should really show what sort of mentality Phil Davies and the management team have.

Re: Ospreys vs Cardiff Blues - Friday 19.05
I was thinking the same Maes! Madness...
I think the fact that a big Welsh derby has only 5 comments on this thread/forum the day of the match says a lot about how the WRU have again shafted the regions, and with it damaged the marketing of the league as well.
As SS says this should be one of THE games of the Welsh 1st half of the Season - instead it's been treated as an afterthought to the Wales money making extra game (which is a friendly don't forget). Understand they need to make money - but surely they need to help the regions be profitable and competitive as well, if your going to take all their internationals, then at least help promote their games and encourage programmes like Scrum V (I imagine the WRU has a bit of influence with BBC Wales) to give some coverage to a big Welsh derby, and a Top of the table clash (Scarlets v Ulster).
Then all the rugby fans and fairweather fans priced out of the Wales game (or in town FOR the Wales game the day after) may pop into Swansea/Llanelli before/after and catch a important game.

anyway back to the game (soz for the rant)!
Decent Blues side, and good to see Tovey and Patchell back - but I'd go for the O's in almost all positions (Cai being the exception as well as Navidi)

Not sure why Patch is at 15, he was doing a very good job before he got hurt.

Baffling. It's a sad state when Ceri Sweeney is the main fly half for a region.

Especially when Patchell, Tovey and Gareth Davies are in the match day ssquad (Can Owen Williams play fly half?)

Would be interesting to hear Phil Davies give his reasons because it is completely negative. Ignoring young talent will not help the Blues progress.

Re: Ospreys vs Cardiff Blues - Friday 19.05
Yeah I have no clues what’s happening at the moment. Having 4 Fly half’s in the match day squad is ridiculous. With Dan Fish out, I assume that Tovey is on the bench as fullback cover, because Davies isn’t a regional level 10, let alone fullback.

Re: Ospreys vs Cardiff Blues - Friday 19.05
It's probably Patchell is seen as the best 10 to cover 15, G Davies (whose prob the worst 10 of the bunch) is covering 10 and 12, and Tovey (who I can only imagine isn't training well enough after injury) is covering 15 - Personally I still can't believe that he hasn't chosen Tovey at FB and Patchell at 10 with Sweeney and a wing on the bench to cover 11, 12, 13, 14

Re: Ospreys vs Cardiff Blues - Friday 19.05
I think to be fair Sweeney is defensively very solid, and to be fair whilst not the most flashy he is also consistant. So I would assume Phil is going for the safe option of defending well and hoping to just put in a bit more of a plodding slowly but surely attack as opposed to trying to be a pretty team that leak tries left right and centre. Maybe it is his time in the Englsih system has given him the more conservative mentality.

Re: Ospreys vs Cardiff Blues - Friday 19.05
At the beginning of the season when fixtures are announced do the Regions have a say in when games are played or are they just told the dates?
Reason for asking is why the hell is a derby match played whenwe have a Welsh game on, the Regions arers truggling to sell/market games as it now they have to try and sell one of the seasons biggest pay days whilst both squads are hit by call ups.

At least the Welsh game affects them both (relatively) equally. What if one of them had to play Ulster?bedfordwelsh wrote:At the beginning of the season when fixtures are announced do the Regions have a say in when games are played or are they just told the dates?

No that pleasure is reserved for the Scarlets, this is the second season on the trot the WRU have conspired to have us play them at a disadvantage.

Re: Ospreys vs Cardiff Blues - Friday 19.05
O's are strong favorites mainly because they have plenty of old heads in the forwards. But there shold be some interesting contests such as Copeland v Bearman and Navidi v Sam. If Fotuali'i plays to his Samoa form then he will probably win the match by himself but if not then the Blues may have enough playmakers to make it interesting
For the last five years at least it has often looked like the Blues had given up on this fixture before the kick off as the games have often been very one sided, tonights game will hopefully be closer and more entertaining

Re: Ospreys vs Cardiff Blues - Friday 19.05
Really looking forward to this game tonight. Im off to the Liberty in the first time in ages this season. Moving away has made it hard to get to games.
My father was always a Cardiff fan, he came up the Cape as a young engineer and started our family there.
As a kid he was the only Cardiff fan we knew. We were always jealous that he had such great players in the team he supported. Cliff, Bleddyn, Dr Jack, and legendary stories of Wilf before them.
I always loved it when Cardiff came to play my childhood club Neath, it meant a guaranteed trip to the Gnoll.
Cardiff vs Neath, or the modern regional equivalent Ospreys vs Blues brings back many happy memories.
Im doing my bit and taking the whole family tonight, we should help swell the West stand.

The Blues are trying to sign Matthew Rees for next season. I heard a bit about this last season, but with Rees out of contract this year it makes sense for the Blues to be trying now.
Perhaps there is some truth in the rumour

Evening All.
O's were close there, but the line was well defended by the Blues, and Fotuali'i went the wrong way.

Jesus, Lloyd Williams is incompetent
First Blues scrum he lets Fotuali walk over and take the ball at the back, then the second scrum he walks away from the breakdown when the ref calls use it - so Tom Williams attempts a hurried clearance kick and gets charged down.
Copeland off injured, Pretorious on
0 - 0
6 minutes.
Blues gifting the Ospreys possession continuously.

I do wonder how on earth Lloyd Williams made it into the Welsh squad...
10-0 after 16 minutes. Morgs attempts a DG but it misses. At least he gives it a go. He likes them.

Blues kick off is awful - a clumsy knock-on is all they can get. Let Patchell take the kickoffs please.

Patchell and Pretorious with good runs
I don't know how the ref can call back for a penalty advantage when your on the try line in possession.
Still, it's 13 - 3
