Apologies if this has already been mentioned but Martin Murray is set to face Sergio Martinez in April, in Argentina.

Can anyone see an upset or do we all reckon it'll be a fairly routine victory for Martinez?

it will be macklin and barker all over again- maybe murray might make the 12 rounds as he's slighter tougher (maybe not more so than macklin) but i would have thought in martinez's home town will urge him on more than usual so i doubt it

I don't know, I think it could be a bit of a money-spinner. He could probably sell out a stadium in Argentina whilst fighting a one-legged rooster so not such a bad idea to take on a relatively low-risk fight.

Isn't he awaiting a ban or serving one?

Good in Martinez for fighting the guys who are normally overlooked for those less deserving if a shot. That being said I can't see Murray causing Martinez too many problems. Macklin is the best out of the 3 imo and depart his best efforts he couldn't take Martinez power and speed for 12 rounds. Murray is a solid fighter but tbh I don't really rate him and thought that he was lucky not to lose to Sturm who was past his best

Will be interesting to see how Martinez starts as he is ageing and injuries like the one he suffered (knee & hand) take longer to recover from at his age

Would pretty much agree with that although wasn't Macklin ahead on one of the cards and in danger of causing an upset? Could be wrong though.

Can't see much past a Martinez win, within the distance. Would agree too that Macklin is the best of the British trio.
The fight will fill a soccer stadium. Big payday for Martinez. There is a lot of chatter about Martinez retiring after this fight. I hope that is not the case. There is still a couple of interesting fights out there for him. But cant agree that Murray is one of them.

Can't see Murray causing problems in this one. Martinez is a class above everyone else in the division and with the home crowd behind him I fancy him to be in top form.

A nice trilogy between Murray, Barker and Macklin would be great to see though.

i actually think murray would give macklin a run for his money, the sturm fight as a measuring stick i'd say there about even. barker seemed amazing but his proneness to injuries and lack of power let him down.

A totally blind judge if that was the case.

Most certainly Macklin caused him PLENTY of problems early on in an absolutely outstanding effort throughout the first 6, and he did knock Martinez down, and he may have just been shading it, but after that it literally was just all Martinez.

Judge: Carlos Ortiz Jr 105-101
Judge: Don Trella 105-101
Judge: Julie Lederman 103-103

Not sure how Lederman had it even.

I remember that HBO were seriously trashing Martinez during the bout, in there blatant attempt to make Chavez Jr. seem like he had a chance.

Didn't watch the fight myself but, if I remember correctly, the general consensus was that Martinez stepped it up after the 'knockdown'? Like most, I would expect a similar outcome here with Murray putting in a very game effort but being stopped late on.

Yeah I remember Martinez stepping it up after the knockdown, seemed to annoy him and made him want to put the record straight.

It was more or less because the knockdown was mildly dubious, it was partially a slip but a punch landed at the same time.

Macklins lead left leg was outside of Martinez right leg so as they grappled Martinez lost balance so Macklin hit (pushed) him with a right hand which meant that Martinez fell over macklins leg though he wasn't hurt at all which annoyed him so he stepped it up

Macklin did very well but i can't really see how he was level going into the 11th

Just on an outside note, does anyone smell a robbery that was being attempted given the scorecards? Also given the fact that the WBC seemed desperate to keep Martinez away from Cheabez Jr. It would have thrown the ultimate spanner in the works to stop that fight from happening, saying that Martinez doesn't deserve a shot, he lost to Macklin etc.

Lederman is obsolete in my eyes these days. He's thrown in some shocking cards recently and seems oblivious to the concepts of boxing off the back foot, counter punching and quality over quantity. His refusal to give even rounds winds me up a bit, too. I try to avoid them wherever possible, but they crop up every now and then.

I doubt it. While I don't think they wanted Martinez-Chavez Macklin wouldn't make sense for them financially as he isn't a name in America and it wouldn't have been PPV. I think they were happy to wait for Martinez to show signs of ageing (Macklin and Barker) then profit from it not knowing how good Martinez really is or how poor Chavez is

Going to make a slightly silly statement and state 'Jr' isn't actually "poor". Yes, he's not great, yes he has big limitations and yes he got the WBC belt given to him with birthday cake included... But the kid can fight and was only shown to be a bit amateurish by a guy who's hit massive form from not exactly being much a few years back.

And I'm not saying he's a world beater/P4P fighter, but he's better than some/most of the alphabet champs and isn't exactly a complete bore to watch. I've started giving the kid a bit of slack, after all it's not often you have the #3 P4P fighter in all sorts of fits and barring him would probably match most of the other guys in the division.

I meant poor as a boxer, no jab, no head movement, no defence but meerly getting close and getting to the body enough to take them out late.

He gave Martinez fits in the 12th but the other 11th were pathetic and I thought that Zbik and Molina beat him and Rubio pushed him very close. Obviously others have their opinions but throughout his campaign at MW I haven't been impressed with him and after Martinez I think that even more and I won't be changing my mind anytime soon

I would put money on both Macklin and (less so) Murray to beat Chavez should they fight him because he has a poor workrate due to poor stamina, having to rehydrate 25lbs doesn't help, whereas those 2 Brits have good engines and good chins so like Zbik they could outwork him

Gotta be fair guys, when Martinez was beating Williams, Pavlik and Dzinzuruk HBO were all over him. When Chavez jumped in the picture they were slagging him off at every opportunity.

I dont understand why people bang on about why does'nt he fight Chavez Jr in a rematch.

Errrrrr why would he?

It was probably (apart from round 12) the most one sided title fight in the modern era.

Chavez was schooled by Martinez, something i didnt think would happen so easily.

It was ridiculous, not to mention he had broke his hand in the 4th round! Imagine if it had not been broken??

Never the less, a good home fight against a challenger who took Sturm the distance in Germany and was unlucky on the cards.

I think Martinez will win this via UD or LKO

Merely wonderingf why he is taking a small nobody when he could fight Chavez again for a big Purse or even another heavy. But Chavez has the biggest name and ppv status

Chavez Jr is out until September.

That's when the rematch has been set.

Martinez has already disposed of Macklin and Barker - whom are both better than Murray.

Murray isn't a puncher. Martinez will mesmerise him with his blistering speed.

Martinez wins by KO inside 8.

And for those claiming Murray beat Sturn. Don't be silly. Macklin beat Sturm. But Murray was given a draw due to the robbery Macklin suffered.
