Charteris out for the season

So, Wales will have the defend their 6Ns title without both their first choice locks, with Alun Wyn Jones unlikely to make a return before the start of the 6Ns.
Having lost 4 locks to injury in the autumn, we are down 2 already and the 6Ns is still months away.

You are never, ever in a position to pick up somebody on a mistake. Their are? Where are you wandering?
Bad news about Long Dog. Wales and possibly the Lions will miss his workrate and lineout work (even as a decoy).

A real shame for Charteris given there's a Lions tour coming up. Would you still say AWJ is first choice though wales606? I've always viewed him as lock who isn't particularly good at being a lock - i.e. grunt work. With Evans,Davies and Charteris Wales have plenty of options at full choice though.

I would say that AWJ and Charteris are our 2 first choice locks. AWJ is a leader and a good athletic lock. You could make a case for Ian Evans to be 1st, but I still fear he is too much of a penalty machine.

Charteris and Evans should be first choice.
Looks like could be Evans and Davies now

Fair enough, personally I'd go with Charteris/Evans or Evans/Davies now. Admittedly AWJ is very athletic but I've always been a big fan of locks who to the basics of their job very well first and foremost. I would say all of Charteris,Evans and Davies usually have more of an impact in the scrum than AWJ for instance. From an England perspective that's why I always loved the 2003era locks with Johnson,Kay,Grewcock and Shaw all very good in the scrum, line-out (Johnson/Kay were exceptional there) and general dirty work.
That's also something that frustrates me with Courtney Lawes. Very athletic and powerful, he puts in some good hits and is solid in the line-out but I've never considered him to offer as much in the scrum as a lock should. The scrum is an 8 man shove yet many people seem to consider it to be a 3 man effort at the front these days which just doesn't make sense to me!
