OWGR - Week #3
I haven't been watching any of the golf action this week apart from checking the leaderboards, and from that I could see that this has been just as much about the losers as it's been about the winners... Justin Rose and Scott Stallings are the main culprits there, after throwing away almost certain wins on the final stretch, plus CHIII, of course, but we're so used to him losing by now that it's not even that much of a surprise. And you could probably add Nike to that list of losers, who's much hyped and trumpetted 'significant announcement' came to a rapid and rather embarrassing finish. You could hardly call Rory and Tiger losers though, despite their very early exits... they came, they got their very fat cheques and they left, with their minds clearly rooted in other far away places (Melbourne, Salzburg, etc...)
But back to the winners... Congratulations to Jamie Donaldson for a super win in Abu Dhabi, it's been a quite incredible rise to the very elite of the sport over the last 6-7 months. He is jumping now inside the top 30 in the world (at #29). Superb effort also from the very young and highly promissing Dane, Thorbjorn Olesen, who is moving up to #42, just ahead of the other very young prodigy, Matteo Manassero. Despite losing the tournament, Rose did just enough in the end to move back to #4, and I am looking forward now to see him having a direct battle with Oosthuizen in Qatar. Otherwise, an excellent result for the Portugese R. Santos, which will help him move just around the #180 mark, plus another sign of a return to form from David Howell who should be moving just around the top 200 after this. Harrington just about hangs on to the top 50, after another good week with the putter, but a pretty awful one with the driver, with less than half the fairways hit...
Congratulations also to Brian Gay, winner of the Humana Challenge in California, after a 3-way play off and back to the winning circle after a very long drought. He should be moving somewhere close to #115 (probably #116), while the eternal runner-up CHIII, will no doubt take some positives out of the form he showed the last couple of weeks, one of them being that he is now more or less on the bubble for the WGC-MP cutline as he moves to #66 in the ranks. Great result for the young Swedish rookie, D. Lingmerth, and a very nice move up the rankings to somewhere around #140. And finally, to add insult to injury, Scott Stallings' missed opportunity means that he is also stopping just short of the top 100...

Re: OWGR - Week #3
Very early count for this week:
- Farmers @ ~50 points (up from 48 pts last year)
- Qatar @ ~46 points (down from 48 pts last year)
Top 3 remain the same, but Rose and Oosthuizen will do head-to-head battle in Qatar for #4. Interestingly enough, Louis will move back to #4 if neither of them will score or if they finish in a tie. Bubba could move to #6 with a win...

Great work PD.............this might be a bit of an ask, but do you know how many currently non exempt for Masters, apart from Donaldson, have moved inside the top 50 since the 1st Masters cut off at end 2012

At a quick glance looks that's only one JC, and that's Harri himself (KJ the one replaced)!
Donaldson was already inside the top 50 at the end of 2012....

Thanks PD,
A Sky commentator made a big deal about a Masters Invite for Donaldson after yesterday so i thought he had only secured it now.............no need for Billy Payne to do any work so!!

Maybe he'll get two invites because he's Welsh?

Re: OWGR - Week #3
Not sure what was in his head, Donaldson finished 2012 at #47. Or... maybe they were talking about that little 'joke' that JD said he played on his mate RRock... He apparently sent him a copy of his Masters invitation asking him... "did you get one of these?"John Cregan wrote:princedracula wrote:...ah, now I see you asked about non-exempt players, so then the answer would be none...

Re: OWGR - Week #3
I think that Donaldson is now arithmetically assured of a place in the US Open field, however, which means he'll be in all the Majors and WGC's for 2013.
Welcome home pd .
Any sign of TWA at Salzburg on your way home?
Geoff Ogilvy continues his irresistable slide - from 51 a couple of weeks ago to 62 now, despite a 27th place finish in the desert. Home game for him in San Diego this week but he's on the outside looking in for Augusta as things stand - in the rest of the Majors though.

Painful & mysterious to watch Howeller 4 putt from 4 feet yesterday when tied for the lead. I see he's up 55 places to 203 but oh what could've been. Still he's probably playing better tee to green than he has been for more than 5 years and 13th green apart had been putting well too

Re: OWGR - Week #3
In two week, Geoff Ogilvie falls from #51 to #62 in the rankings. He needs to have a good tournament to make sure he is in the Match Play.
PD: Can't Sneds also get to #6 if he successfully defends this week?

Ogilvy is already at #64 as we speak, before the tournament results for this week are counted in... Yes, of course, Sned could move to #6 with win, even more so than Bubba...

Could someone explain to me why Westwood is not active at the moment but does have 6 tournaments in a row in his schedule as of Dubai (http://www.leewestwood.com/tour-schedule.html)??
That seems pretty much (including a flight from Dubai to California) to me...

Re: OWGR - Week #3
Barring any further WD's the Farmers field is set. Here are changes and other added players and/or Exemptions
WD - Brian Davis (Reason unknown)
ADDED VIA EXEMPT STATUS - David Constable (cat 25), Chez Reavie (cat 25), All cat 25 regular players make the field.
ADDED VIA RESTRICTED SPONSOR EXEMPTION - Peter Tomasulo, Neal Lancaster (cat 25 bottom of reshuffle medical status for both). Rod Pampling (cat 29).
PRIOR ANNOUNCED SPONSOR EXEMPTIONS - RESTRICTED - Camillio Villegas. UNRESTRICTED - John Daly, Stephen Fox, Patrick Cantlay. (NOTE: Villegas and Daly already had SE's before Restricted SE's were given, so at the time they were considered Unrestricted. However once all Category 25 players made the field via Status or SE... Villegas as the higher ranked Category 29 player becomes the 4th Restricted SE and Daly remains an Unrestricted SE even though he's a category 29 player)
MONDAY ADDED UNRESTRICTED SPONSOR EXEMPTION - Jordan Spieth
SECTION CHAMPION - Jon Fiedler
MONDAY FOUR SPOTTER - Mark Baker (64), Adam Hadwin (64), Brad Adamonis (66), Michael McCabe (66)
CURRENT ALTERNATES - Billy Mayfair, Gary Christian, Alexandre Rocha, D.J. Trahan, Bill Lunde, Tim Petrovic.

Cheers robo!
You're way ahead of the PGATour.com site once again. They badly need someone like you to keep them up to speed with the field situation...
Shouldn't make a difference this time to the final OWGR point allocation for Farmers...

Actually this information is from the PGAT... but the initial "filled" field after Top-10's from the prior week and restricted SE's are determined... sometimes takes a while to get to the public site. But from this point forward field changes should hit the internal and public lists pretty much simultaneously.
And as for OWGR Correct... no change... OWGR #144 Davis OUT is a loss of 1 World ERV... Adding #190 Reavie in adds 1 World ERV. All the other changes are above #200... Still a high level 50 event at this point.

They used to have that page called "Inside the field" where you could keep track of who's in/who's out the days before the start of the tournament. I haven't seen that anymore since the begining of this year...?

I asked a couple of weeks ago at the Sony... they plan on bringing that page back... but it seems they have had bigger technical issues this year thus far... It looks like their stats area is getting cleaned up quite a bit this week... so maybe we'll see the Inside the Field page come back this week as well. They have a small crew on Monday's, but [most] all hands are on deck by Tuesday's. And by the way... I'm still in Paradise and won't be in SD at all this week... so I only have access to the media HQ via the web...

NOTES:
W-M - WGC-Match Play - The OWGR top-64 qualify as of February 10 OWGR ranking. The above assumes any player currently #40 or better will remain in the top-64 as of that date and are all marked with an *. (But probably top-50 at this point is safe which would add Manassero, Bjorn, Lynn, Donaldson, Harrington)
W-C - WGC Cadillac Championship - Key remaining qualifying criteria is to get into the OWGR top-50 by Feb 27, or Mar. 5. (Martin Kaymer is #28 as of Jan 21 and assumed in as indicated by the *) Also any players top-10 in 2013 FedEx Points as of Mar 5, or top-10 Race to Dubai as of Feb 27 get in. Martin Kaymer is currently not officially qualified, but at OWGR #28 it is assumed he will remain in the top-50, thus he's included but marked with an *
MAS - Masters - Key remaining criteria is to win a PGA Tour non-alternate event or get into the OWGR top-50 after the Shell Houston Open or Trophée Hassan II (Mar 31)
PLA - the PLAYERS - Remaining qualifying criteria includes winning any PGAT event through the WGC Bridgestone the week before.
USO - U.S. Open - Remaining criteria includes winning the Masters, Players or Euro BMW PGA, or be OWGR top-60 by May 21 or June 11. PLUS the qualifiers
BOC - The Open Championship - Lots of ways remain to qualify - OWGR top-50 or some Top-20 FedEx and R2D players, Plus there are mini money lists, qualifiers, and more entry points for other world tours.
W-B - WGC Bridgestone - Key remaining criteria includes OWGR top-50 as of July 23 or July 30. Also winners of worldwide events with an OWGR ERV field strength of 115 (most level 26 events and higher)
PGA - PGA Championship - Key remaining criteria includes getting inside the OWGR top-100. That is not an official entry criteria, but traditionally the PGA of A invites all up through #100. Also top-70 on a special money list from last year's PGA through the W-Bridgestone, and playing members of the last Ryder Cup from both sides, but ONLY if they remain in the OWGR top-100 as of July 29. (The players marked PGA* have not technically qualified, but as they are/were currently inside the OWGR top-30 as of Jan 14, it's assumed they will remain inside the OWGR top-100 at the cutoff date.)

Great work robo. Thanks. Suprised to see Poults not in the US Open (yet).
Btw, you got Bernd Wiesberger on the wrong list. Jim Carrey could have done the same...

themightyone wrote:Could someone explain to me why Westwood is not active at the moment but does have 6 tournaments in a row in his schedule as of Dubai (http://www.leewestwood.com/tour-schedule.html)??
That seems pretty much (including a flight from Dubai to California) to me...
He'll be coming off a long break, and working his way back towards his new home over the period. He'll be there for the Honda and pretty close for Doral, the last of the 6. Thereafter, he's not got more than 2 in a row planned until late in the year; week off, Palmer, Shell, week off, Masters, 2 off, QH, Players, week off, Wentworth, Memorial, week off, US Open, week off, AT&T, French, week off, The Open, week off, WGC, USPGA, week off, fedex * 2, week off, fedex * 2, dunhill, seve, 2 off, RTD * 4.
Think it could be a tiring end, 8 tournaments in 10 weeks, but I like the mid-season pattern. Of course, if he's not high up enough in the fedex come August/September and or RTD come October that could be irrelevant!

Apparently not, which I think is a positive sign.

It coincides with Quail Hollow, the week before the Players, which is probably why he skips it.

Re: OWGR - Week #3
Seems that I missed counting one of the top guys in Qatar first time round, so actually looks like Qatar should be worth 48pts instead of 46...
Any guys playing in Qatar from Els upwards could reach top 10 with a win (Garcia could move as high as 8th).
At Farmers, anyone from BVP up could reach top 10 with win...

As I mentioned previously: Luiten has reentered the top 100 so could be included in the PGA Championship provisional qualifyers (he lead that one at one stage last year by the way), although he has a veeeeeeery long way to go...

I wonder if Daly is exepmt for anything anymore, both ET and PGAT, or if he solely lives off sponsor invites?

In the US, just the PGA Championship, plus the Tour recognises the Open Championship.

GPB... Didn't see this question earlier... but Daly got into the Farmers via Sponsors exemption... not past champion status. Category 19 Past Champion status (for a specific event) only goes back 5 years now.... So without the SE... Daly would have been a few spots short of getting in as the field just barely dipped into category 29... and Daly is 13th in that category.

Re: OWGR - Week #3
Thanks Robo, Kwini already answered that question above.
Ogilvy out of the top 64. Played horribly this week. I know he is playing Phoenix, but not sure about Pebble Beach. If he does happen to sneak in to MP, I wouldn't want to face him if I were one of the top seeds.
KJ could fall out of the top 64 this week too.
From another board, a guy connected with the WMO says the long term weather forecast looks great, with little chance of frost issues that they have encountered in recent years. Preparing for over 500K people!
Not a great field in Phoenix. Sneds, Bubba, Dufner are the highest ranked players.
Paddy is making his PGAT 2013 debut at Phoenix.
Westy is playing Pebble Beach. Will Chubby be his amateur partner?

Not sure of that... I'll wait and do the math with the new rankings (or just wait for PD to do it :-)... but I looked over the field and it "seems" a little better than last year (even with PM's drop in the rankings)... I'm guessing it'll go up 2-4 points this year... to 52-54.

Re: OWGR - Week #3
At a first glance, with the changes taking place after Qatar, Phoenix looks somewhere around 50-52 pts... too early to tell. But I would be surprised if it goes anywhere near 54 pts unless something pretty dramatic changes...
Dubai, also at a pre-early glance, looks to be somewhere around 36 pts, give or take...
We'll know better by... Monday, by the looks of things...

Re: OWGR - Week #3
Here's the deal...
IF Tiger chooses to play another tournament between Farmers and the Match Play and IF he wins all three of them, he could certainly become #1 again.
If that extra tournament would be Riviera for example, then it's likely that Rory would need to make the final against him at the WGC-MP to retain the #1...
