Best Commentator??
Who is the Best Commentator/s ever?
JR,Jerry Lawler, Michael Cole,Booker T,Josh Matthews,Matt Striker,Todd Grisham,Joey Styles,Mick Foley,Tazz,Mike Tenay,Don West,Vince Mcmahon,Gorilla Monsoon, Bobby Heenan?
Personally i would go for JR and Heenan. Put everything they had/have in to commentating.

did JR and Heenan ever call a match together? I'd be very interested to hear that.

Al Snow and Jonathan Coachman were the best duo, but on his own, there is no-one better than Jack Corpella

I'll always be a big fan for the JR and King duo, but its got to go to Mcmahon and Ventura partnership.
Honorable mention to JBL aswell.

Heenan and JR did WrestleMania IX together, Jesse Ventura is the head and shoulders best for me

Come on mate another awful list....
I look for partnerships when speaking about commentators...
Top 3
Gorilla & The Brain
McMahon & Ventura
Ross & Lawler
I think Heyman is another glaring omission.

Re: Best Commentator??
Personally think JR is overrated, he has been poor since he's been back.
Can't comment on the likes of Monsoon and Heenan as they were before my time.
Loved Lawler as a heel, Michael Cole has always been solid as a play by play when he was just a normal face not attracting attention.
JBL was brilliant in his little stint.
I also think Regal could be brilliant as he is doing a great job currently on NXT.

Think your a bit harsh on JR. Considering the guy's health of late it is amazing how he has come back at all.
Monsoon and Heenan are great. WWE had a show called challenge and they were brilliant.
But Ventura with McMahon was great because Ventura just literally ate McMahon week in and week out and that pretty much set the standard for todays commentators by where one is impartial and mainly a babyface and one portrays the heel.

Ventura was terrific but the greatest commentary I ever heard was for The Royal Rumble 92

Re: Best Commentator??
Sadly my knowledge of the business is restricted pretty much to the King/JR time in WWE. I thought that early 00's they worked brilliantly together as they played face/heel without King being nasty or ripping anyone's performances in the ring (like Cole).
I would like to see Joey Styles mentioned for his time on ECW... OH MY GAHD!

Styles is a top shout, the fact he did it alone has to go in his favour

Re: Best Commentator??
JBL was my personal favourite on colour commentary, perhaps exacerbated by my feeling that king isn't what he was...
Oddly part of the JBL appeal was his partnership with Cole.
Obviously JR is my pick of the play by play guys...I'm not old enough to really remember much of Vince or any others.
I'd like to put on record my disdain for both Striker and Booker. Booker may win me over yet though.

Re: Best Commentator??
Striker should have been statto in the corner feeding the odd fact to the audience. He doesn't have a great commentary voice, though I think Regal could be great. That posh British accent that often veers into Black Country! Great combo.

Re: Best Commentator??
JR and Bobby Hennan I would love to have heard as a combo. Probably my favourite single commentator and co-commentator respectively.
I actually liked quite a few others as well, McMahon, Monsoon, Ventura and Schiavone.
Each and every one of them had many memorable lines too. 'He got 'em, he's got 'em, Wannne... Twoooo... annnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn..... Naaaoooooooo. 2 and 7/8!' This was after something like a body slam or something. Classic!

Re: Best Commentator??
One of my favourite Vince McMahon calls is Wrestlemania 10 during the Lex Luger/Yokozuna match. I think the guest ref Mr. Perfect is down at this point, Luger's doing a number on Yoko and in the middle of it all Jim Cornette gets up on the apron and dragged into the ring by Flexy Lexy.
The whole time this is going on McMahon is STANDING (you can see him in the background) with his arms waving about shouting:
"YES! NO! YES! NO! YES! NO! NO! NO! YES! YES! NO! NO! YES!"
Unreal!

"WITH GOD AS MY WITNESS HE IS BROKEN IN HALF"
"WOULD SOMEBODY STOP THE DAMN MATCH"
Both JR both in the same match and still to me the greatest lines in WWE history

Loved Gorilla's language to - if you wanna call it that!
'Bread-basket', 'kisser', 'drumsticks', 'lights are on and no ones home', 'will you stop' 'will you be serious', 'right in the occipital proturbence' and 'this whole place has gone bananas'.
