The Godfather 1 > The Godfather 2 - Am I right???
Godfather 1 is more compact.........Has the boss (Marlon Brando) in a starring role......Moves quicker!!........Has the great James Caan and boy doesn't he die well!!.............Is groundbreaking and has so many memorable scenes....The beating of the brother-in-law.......Frido's cowardice........The shooting of Sterling Haydn......The betrayal.......The death of Luca Brasse..........
Going against the grain maybe but The Godfather 1 is the best for me..But only by a 116-112 decision............

I'd call it an honourable draw, Truss. Think there is more scope to 2 and it's a more ambitious film and both Pacino and De Niro are brilliant in it. However, 1, was groundbreaking and it's probably the more enjoyable of the two films.

I think even without Marlon Brando I'd prefer part 1 to part 2, his performance makes it a no-brainer. Still enjoy part 2 as well though.

Gf1 - 'nuf said there.
Gf2 - I like the flashback parts; they were taken from the novel just like all of "1" (as they called it in "The Sopranos.") The "modern" bits with Michael as the Don seemed first draft stuff and foreshadowed the expensive mediocrity of Gf3.

Funny thing is The Godfather 2 got more awards and is critically more acclaimed...
Then again the critics like to see things we don't....makes them feel more special.

Not with that weak story, no. I always felt they should have had Mike die somewhere in the middle, then have a battle for the throne between Vincent with Connie as his backer, and Anthony with Tom Hagen as his backer (and they should have spent the $$$$ to get Robert Duvall.) We could have seen who could out-Godfather the other.

Godfather one was magical. Truly the greatest film ever made, the second built upon it and had some excellent scenes but is outshone by the first.

2 for me. Love the original Don Corleone. But De Niro was out of this world brilliant as the young Don. He even went as far as learn the Scicilian dialect of Italian. For me the best film ever.
