6Ns - Inside the coaches' minds
Anyone see this on the BBC website - a look at the England coaches approach before, during and after the game.
Quite interesting, particularly re information overload and asking players to come up with solutions. A lot just sounds like common sense. These always tend to focus on the English team, I'd like to see similar ones for the other coaching set-ups.
Any thoughts?

It's an excellent piece.
I'd like to see similar ones for each nation.

Jenks.
Food.Park. Walk. Food. Sleep Hooray!

Re: 6Ns - Inside the coaches' minds
Good article. Interesting to see how they structure, prioritise and deliver communication.
Obviously a winning side is a happy group but they do jolly in that photograph
I wonder whether it works similarly in other camps?
Common sense is not to be underestimated, especially in pressurised situations before and during matches. Modern rugby is all about being well-drilled and knowing your roles. It's when you can trust players to do this that they can be given a bit more freedom to express themselves. England now have a no-nonsense, common sense coaching approach that is reaping rewards.Hood83 wrote:A lot just sounds like common sense.

They named a great rock band after the current welsh coaches - "Don't You Forget About Me"

I would agree, but I reckon that has to be balanced with a degree of imagination and creativity. Providing that along with common sense in bite sized nuggets is surely the key. I still think the England coaching set-up could benefit from a few (any) fresh ideas on first phase attacking moves.

Re: 6Ns - Inside the coaches' minds
Everything I read at the moment (not just this article) highlights how important Andy Farrell seems to be to this English setup. He just seems to love what he does and demands/inspires excellence from those around him.
Hope the RFU puts him on a lifetime contract!

Re: 6Ns - Inside the coaches' minds
Apart from GR this coaching team was nobody's top choice. Now after year we are largely convinced and SL is the one making it work. He is positive about the way his experience is being used to great advantage and the key to match day seems to be keep it simple, the rest has already been done in training. There also appears to be a real belief in the individual players to make decisions on the pitch and they will only get better at thinking for themselves as time goes on.
Good article I think which fills me with hope that there is a lot more to come from this group as it evolves.

Thanks for posting that, an interesting read. It is interesting to read just how important the video analysis team are these days.

Re: 6Ns - Inside the coaches' minds
One of Lancasters greatest strengths is that he doesn't get hysterical about things or show his emotion inappropraitely. He's a modern professional coach and the players are feeding off that in a paternalistic fashion. It creates a positive psychology unlike the victim mentality and lack of leadership that Johnson was unknowingly creating. Lancaster takes responsibility in an emotionally mature fashion and that is infectious and instills both an individual and a collective responsibility within the team - win or lose that is what he continues to instill and it is a great asset to have - even greater when i think he is someone I haven't taught

Re: 6Ns - Inside the coaches' minds
Something that did slightly worry my came in another piece where Lancaster talked of gainline options. It all made sense, bit it seemed like his focus almost relentlessly was on going 'over' the gainline. I know it's technically correct, but there seemed very little interest in unlocking defences just - move the point of attack, hit the line at pace, ruck quickly rinse and repeat. That's an excellent start - but what about SOME pre-planned moves, a short kicking game to turn a midfield, dummy runners etc etc.
Our backline could learn from Wasps going forward - quick, accurate passers drawing the man on at a genuine lick. Been really impressed by them in that regard but I suppose it helps them having lots of pace in the team.
The off-loading looked a step up against Scotland so hopefully that is something that is brought forward as an option and strength.

Re: 6Ns - Inside the coaches' minds
I like the French version of this
Would love to see the equivalent article for France.
Pre kick off: "I quickly try and teach players how to play new positions, check the horoscope"
Time to tweak: "We sip a coffee"
Half time: "I tell Michalak how well he's playing, everyone looks at me crazy"
Second half trouble: "I shout encouragement to Freddie, I love him"
Final whistle: "Why the boos?"
Match day evening: "Baguette anyone?"
