The GOAT Competition Empty The GOAT Competition

Post by Adam D Thu 21 Feb 2013, 9:35 pm

Good Evening all,

You might have noticed that the GOAT section has been removed for the time being.

I am sure you will all agree that this has been a great feature over the last month and a huge thank you to MtotheC (and competitor champions)for running a very good event.

Unfortunately, after an indepth investigation, we have discovered widespread skulduggery when it has come to the voting of several ties.

Due to this, we have temporarily suspended the competition whilst we discuss what to do next. Needless to say, the member has received a permanent ban and this will not happen again.

Feel free to leave suggestions below but we are looking at specific ties and the possibility of rerunning these.

For the time being though, I would like to thank you all for your continued contributions to these threads - service will resume shortly

I cannot believe how sad some people are. I feel massively sorry for anyone who contributed and MtotheC. Quite ridiculous.

Possibly, one way to stop this next time is not to allow anyone to vote who has under 20 posts. Not sure if that's possible or not but it should stop saddos setting up duplicate accounts.

Hi Duty, unfortunately its not, we can limit people on when they can PM but not on voting.

The only alternative is for those wishing to take part in the GOAT that we actually take names, add them into a group and then only those people can actually see the thread in question and therefore vote.

You could remove the poll, and have people post their vote.

How about if you can only vote by PM? You still have a thread open, where people contribute their opinions, but the only way to actually vote is by PM.

At what point do you restart the competition would be the bigger question, there are certain names who have got where they are by fair means while others have not. LeBron James was beaten in the last 16 but I got the impression Khan would have fared better as he had the vocal backing of a fair few of us. It's a shame as on the whole it was good fun debating something different for a change.

Is it not possible to track the votes?

I'd argue that, except clear cases of major vote-rigging (where it should be re-run) you should go with the results.

In future perhaps voting could be done by posting in a thread: have 1 thread for the debate and another where you just vote if that makes it easier to count.

Such a shame to here this, my all round sporting knowledge isn't such that I could wade heavily into this comp but I was enjoying it.

Hope everything gets sorted out, for MtotheC (who is one of the best posters on here) and anyone else who contributed.

just to add that i have been really enjoying this as well, and hopes it can continue in some form. i dont really care who wins overall as i doubt it will change my mind who's my goat anyway, but has been interesting seeing peoples opinions on the different sports people, the poll isnt needed for this still to be a good thread.

if we were really wanting a outright winner perhaps people put there top ten in order and score system like f1, and the person with the highest score is the goat

No vote tracking isn't available either unfortunately. Having people write their vote could be an option instead of a simple click system, would be helpful from a number taking perspective though if when they posted it, they did it with a rolling total at the time to so we don't have to wade through all the posts totting it up.

If its restarted just have each section put forward 2-3 contenders so we don't have like 6cricketer and 6boxers, make it fairer to find a true GOAT with bigger sports like boxing cricket football rugby having 3 nominees and weighting based on global impact of sport

Personally i dont think all is lost yes Spaghands has wrecked this series, and thgis was patently obvious with the outstandingly high voter turnout for the Michael Jordan matches.

How hard would it be to compile a thing like a er er "Electoral roll" to qualify you have to have:
A. Been a member for six months minimum.
B. Have posted constuctive posts on your preferred sport(s) forum, and generally contributed to the forum.
C.All applications for enrolement have to approved by a mod.
All votes are cast by way of a post so that everything is transparent.

Isnt it great to see democracy in action.

Once this is done we can recommence where a number of people were trying to get Jahingar Khan into contention, (and I wanted to see Kelly Slater). but we had to put up with the ridiculous Le Bron James campaign run by Spaghands.

Footnote: I mentioned several times that anyone who felt the need to have to applaud their own post was a fool, but would anyone listen?

I think that although healthy debate has been the most fun part of this exercise I find it amazing that people are so concerned about who will win they will try and gerrymander the result of what is in essence a pretty tinpot and irrelevant poll.

JUST HOW SAD AND PATHETIC ARE YOU? It is just a bit of fun Rolling Eyes

Post by Adam D Fri 22 Feb 2013, 7:54 am

we are limited by the software as to what we can do.

Once it was discovered how deep the rigging had gone, we felt that it was fair to everyone who had taken part so far that we didnt let any dubious results stand.

We also didnt want all the hardwork to go to waste.

So there will be an announcement later today and the polls will recommence on Monday.

Most results are absolutely fine but others will have to be reran which will delay the final unfortunately.

Thanks for your continued patience.

It is a shame that there this has been ruined given it did attract posters from all over the forum to participate and exchange views on various sports.

I very much would like to those who participated and a big shout out to MtotheC.

I echo GSC's idea. Just get people to post their vote. Smile

It has indeed been good for cross forum pollination and has given a wide range of posts from the educated and informative to the purile slagging that forums are duty bound to provide. Both of which have their place and can be interesting and amusing.

Who's better than whom always brings up some rare old tussles. Objective subjectivity or subjective objectivity? Don't care. I've learned some stuff I didn't know about and I guess most people have their GOAT in their head and nothing anyone says will change that.

In terms of skullduggery - it is inevitable I'm afraid. If my memory serves, some radio station did a poll on who the most influential person of the 20th century (maybe even millennium) was. A load of QPR fans hi-jacked it and ensured (I think) former Man City defender Jamie Clapham won the title based on the stunning own goal he scored that kept QPR in the top flight one year.

Hope GOAT comes back Monday de-bugged and incorruptible.

The idea of running this tournament was fantastic - and credit has to go the the admins and mods for putting all this together. I'm gutted that one person has ruined all that hard work.

Having said that, I'm sure you'll have a solution soon, so we can get back to what we've all loved doing - defending our sporting heroes and debating those who, until now, we didn't know much about.

And it may also give us the time to pen a few more write ups for those sporting greats that didn't have champions Smile

If this gets rid of Spunky Hands and I never have to read about the Non-Event Lads ever again then it has been worth it.

Only dodgy votes I would say are anything involving basketball players so Lebron James knocking out Khan in the wc round, then obviouly Michael Jordan in every round and maybe the vote where Woods got knocked out.

VTR, the Woods one was fine, Woods was consistently behind the whole day and only lost by a couple in the end. Nothing suspicious about that, his dreadful character, rightly or wrongly was probably taken into consideration by a public that isn't overly fond of golf in a sporting context.

Post by MtotheC Fri 22 Feb 2013, 9:32 am

Mornings gents the whole concept was based around creating a new way for us all to debate on sports and sporting greats that we are not only passionate about but also have very little knowledge of. I for one have a new found respect and knowledge of ice hockey, athletics and cricket to name but a few.

It's disappointing that its come to this however we have a solution in the pipe line and are working on getting the goat back in some form next week.

Yes the tournament could have been run a shorter space of time but why condense something that obviously breeds such debate and interest across the whole forum.

Thanks to everyone who has written articles and commented.

We will crown a v2 goat sooner rather than later.

Thanks

Yes s_r I am unsure on that one. I voted Johnson myself but did expect Woods to win it easily. As you say though his character probably counted against him and some people will vote for the more athletic discipline.
