Favourite Comedies
Not to many to choose from now but what are your favourite comedies from the past till now?
Mine are, no particular order:
Only Fools & Horses - Yes, it went on to long but this was classic stuff in the mid eighties - early 90's.
Fawlty Towers - great writing and great characters, with some classic scenes.
The Royle Family - The story of a er working class family, somewhere in the north west was written superbly by Aherne and Cash. Not to keen on the xmas specials they are wheeling out though.
The Simspons - Not seen this programme since the 90's but it was the funniest programme on TV, for me, with Homer making the programme what it is.
Blackadder (Goes Forth) - I wasn't a big fan of the first three series but the fourth was as funny as any 6 part series that has been.
The Office - Brilliant writing and a superb character in Brent. Like Fawlty Towers, knew when it was time to quit, although the xmas specials were funny and moving.
The Inbetweeners - Relied on naughty humour but was laugh out loud humour all the same. Don't mention the film.

Here was my list from two years ago!
https://www.606v2.com/t1791-the-top-10-comedies-of-all-time
I would put How I met Your Mother in there now (and quite high as well)

I did wonder is this had been done before.
An American comedy fan, Adam? I'm not tbh. I love their films but not sitcoms, etc.

Was that the one where Barney got the dog? If so, the best one of the new series so far (which has been sub par so far).
I really fancy Victoria.

Re: Favourite Comedies
I think Peep Show is the funniest one still going at the moment, I got the boxset for Christmas and I have still watched every episode a few times and never stop laughing.
I think Friends is still the king of American sitcoms and pretenders to the thrown like How I Met Your Mother and Big Bang Theory just haven't come close for me. Neither of them have ever managed to get more than a couple of laughs from me.
I'm a big fan of Extras, weirdly don't like The Office though. Loved Gavin and Stacey, but not sure if that can be considered truly to be a comedy as it had a lot more dramatic elements than your average comedy.

How could I forget Peep Show! Hilarious programme, brilliantly done. Same goes with Gavin and Stacey.
As for American sitcoms, Frasier is definitely the king. Consistently funny throughout the whole run. Friends went rubbish for a bit when Ross and Rachel broke up (turned into a soap opera). The writing on Frasier was just genius. Cheers was the same. I also liked Home Improvement, I got more laughs out of that than Friends. The Friends characters seemed to turn into parodies of themselves.

Re: Favourite Comedies
Favourite ever would have to be Ony Fools and Horses. Predictable, yes, horrific Christmas specials between 2001 and 2003, yes, but great aside from that.
In recent years, either 'The Thick of It' or 'Early Doors', the latter of which is so underrated it's untrue. Better than The Royle Family, for me. 'The Simpsons' was brilliant up until about the turn of the century and has been absolutely terrible since ('Hurricane Neddy' and the episode where Homer becomes the regional Krusy look-a-like, can't remember the name though, being the two greatest episodes ever!). 'Family Guy' has followed a similar pattern; brilliant up until about series 7, but I'd give anything after that a wide berth.

Re: Favourite Comedies
The first series (not season, thanks) of The Mighty Boosh, when they worked in the zoo. The second and third seasons weren't very good. But that first one was unreal.
Have to agree with Chris about Early Doors too. It's nice to know someone else watched it.

Re: Favourite Comedies
You're a man of great taste, Il G. Cracking little comedy, Early Doors.
As a side note, I agree that they really, really need to stop making terrible Christmas 'specials' of the Royle Family - they're in danger of tarnishing the reputation of the original series, which were brilliant. Did anyone else see the one which aired on Christmas day just gone? It was painful, felt as if it was going on forever....

Surprised South Park doesn't seem to have too much of a following. Kath & Kim is another underrated one.

Re: Favourite Comedies
Brass Eye
Arrested Development
The Office (UK)
Black Books
Peep Show
Community
Parks and Recreation
Monkey Dust
All phenomenal shows
Very much a mixture of late 90s/early 00s British stuff and mid-late 00s american works.
I'd recommend giving the american ones which you may or may not have come across a shot, some of the best written comedy I've seen in a long time.

I was never overly impressed with Green Wing, felt a little too forced at times the humour.
