Egyptian Fans given death penalty after Rioting at a football match
RAGING Egyptians have reacted with devastating consequences to a court's decision to uphold death penalties for 21 football fans convicted of causing a deadly stadium riot.
The court also jailed two senior police officers for 15 years for their role in the violent clashes when more than 70 people died.
n Cairo, fans of the local Al-Ahly club stormed the country's Football Association headquarters and set it on fire after seven more police officers were cleared.
And in Port Said, where the deadly soccer riot occurred, locals are causing mayhem in protest of the death sentences.
A state of emergency has been declared in Sinai state after fears jihadists could act in retaliation to the verdicts.
The stadium riot last year killed 74 people. And unrest has plagued Port Said since the death sentences were announced in January, with local residents who want the fans spared fighting pitched battles with police. At least eight people have been killed this week, including three policemen.
In a ruling on live TV, the court also sentenced five more people to life in jail for the riot and acquitted 28. Others out of a total of 73 defendants received shorter jail sentences.
The stadium riot erupted at the end of a match between Cairo’s Al-Ahly team and Al-Masry, the local side.
Spectators were crushed when panicked crowds tried to escape from the stadium after a pitch invasion by supporters of Al-Masry. Others fell or were thrown from terraces.
