Final play hypothetical for Cardiff next weekend
If I understand correctly then a 7 point winning margin is required against England for Wales to win the 6 nations title. Some would argue that a victory by less than 7 points would be meaningless.
The situation could only apply to Wales (this year at least) but is a question for everybody
My scenario is this; Wales lead by 2 points with time expired and the ball dead but have been awarded a penalty in mid-field. Should they boot the ball dead, take the win and forget about the title? Or should they jeopardise the win and take the scrum/tap and go in the hope of obtaining a title-winning try?
Would it make a difference if the lead was 5 points and they only needed a penalty/drop goal (assume for this one that the penalty is out of even 1/2p's range)?
And a question for English/Welsh fans- how would a less than 7 point Welsh victory leave you feeling come Saturday?

Nice...
I am an all or nothing kinda guy (and coach) if Wales in that scenario are happy with second and the win (denying of the GS) then I will be hugely angry at such a lack of ambition.
I would much rather see England win the GS while trying to take the title any day of the week.
The interesting scenario is what do England do???
Take the 2 point loss, let the GS disapear and hoof the ball out for the championship? Or attack for the GS and run the risk of Wales scoring a title winning try?

Stuff the championship, I just want Wales to win the game any way they can.
We lost to Ireland, no grand slam so anything else is meaningless. Just concentrate on winning the match, if Wales start worrying about winning margins we will end up losing.

It's a question of what's more important?
A win over England? Which isn't rare anymore
The title.
Not really hard isit? Your scenario says that wales are already winning though. So Wales attempting to get another try for the title, even if the don't manage it they would probably win anyway.
The title is what we all want. Back to back titles for tiny Wales would be a dream.

Winning the championship is winning the championship, slam or no slam.
Saying the championship title is meaningless because it's not a grandslam is ridiculous!
Plenty of teams have won the title but not the slam in receny years. Walea are just lucky that they won all their recent grand slam matches.
In 1987 and 1994 Wales lost their final match but won the triple crown in 88 and title in 94.

Question for you.
Why didn't Henson take the penalty from Halfway at the end of the Ireland v Wales 2009 match?
I know Henson missed one badly earlier in the game but he should have been made to take it! !
I thought Jones attempting a 50m penalty was absurd.

Jones assumed seniority and went for the glory even though he was never going to make it. Typical welsh decision making when the chips are down

The final play?: Ashton swan-dive to win the game, the TC, the GS and all bragging rights.
The Splash to make a damp squib of the Millenium.
You know it, you just don't dare think it.

The final play?: Ashton swan-dive to win the game and he knocks on as he hits the deck, the TC, the GS and all his Lions chances go up in red smoke.
The Splash leaves the field looking like a damp squib and Mannu just launches a right upper cut for good measure - Swing Low

I want Wales to win, I couldn't really care if we get the championship. In fact, I'd possibly like it if Wales won, but England were champions as a sort of revenge for 1994
