Egos and Golf why do they clash!
First topic message reminder :
There have been a couple of good threads on here ercently regarding the Average Golfer and the 7800 yard Torrey Pines and what does it mean to course design etc.
Well last night I came across what can only be described as the Ego of the flash golfer! Which really annoyed me so I wanted to share my frustrations with my fellow posters and as have you eperienced this and would you have behaved the same as I did....
I decided to try out a driving range not to far from my office, it was a well laid out place and balls were not what I would call well priced though but wasn't to worried about that.
It was relatively busy 40bays but only 5 were available so I took myself off to the quite spot which happened to be a few bays down from the teaching area (now in my ignorance when at the range I pay no attention to who is around me and focus purely on myself and what i am there for).
After about 15mins hitting a few warm up wedges and few little knocked down 9irons, I decided to get to work on what I was there for and work on moving the ball with the driver ready for a winter knockout i'm playing this weekend at a course where shaping the ball makes life easier, I had hit no more than half a dozen shots when an Oik appeared from seemingl out of nowhere and i quote said to me "ere mate I see you can hit a ball, but i bet i can outdrive ya on every shot!" My retort well thats nice for you but i'm here to practice not measure c*ck sizes, and went back about my business
He preceded to tee it up in the bay next to me and everytime i Hit a ball in my own time and working on my drills he would fire one off straight after then turn and say to his mate behind him you see that told I could do him on everyshot!
This then led to a brief argument in which I told him in no uncertain terms he should have respect for other range users and that I was there not see how far I can hit it but work on my game and that his behaviour ws more suited to the stands of a league 1 match and not the driving range. His response to this is what shocked me the most and again I quote "look pal i'm a 4handicap assitant pro here and this fella watching me is someone having lessons with me so I think I know how to behave it ain't my fault I can hit it further than ya and that I'm better is it!"
That really annoyed me this chav was not someone who turned up giving it large no he was worse he was someone who should know the etiquette and respect it and set an example for his pupil! With this in mind i'd had enough and said right ok 5 shots whoever is longest 3 times out of five loses and pays up a tenner to the loser! He grinned like a chesire cat accepted my wager and I out hit him 5 times out of 5, only then did I tell him of my handicap which is lower than his and picked up mubs left the half bucket of balls i had left and complained this morning in person to his head pro and club secretary on my drive into work. They assure me they will respond later today!
What would you have done, I was close to making him eat my driver! and I wont be going back there again!

How about when he claimed to have driven two par 4's in the same round, explaining that he was assisted by a strong following wind. It was amusing when someone pointed out that according to the scorecard the holes ran in the opposite direction!

Re: Egos and Golf why do they clash!
Blue i have driven 4 par 4's in round and 2 on more than 20 occasions on various courses
are you talking about any specific course where you think that is impossible or something?
not being funny but why would anyone question that. Many golf courses have about 3 drivable short 4's from yellow tees.
If you think the wind is a factor t- wind can change- or it could have been cross.
Dont get me wrong I know mav lied about a lot of stuff. But you really are grasping at straws on questioning someone driving two par 4's in one round.
There are possibly 20 plus golfers at my club that can do that

Is the point that the claim was he drove the par 4s wind assisted. If the wind is that much assistance hitting into it would not be assisted and therefore unable to help and actually making it harder.

Yeah, I don't think that's a tall tale at all, take TOC for example. You can drive 9, 10, 12 and 18 without too much bother even off the medal tees.mystiroakey wrote:Blue i have driven 4 par 4's in round and 2 on more than 20 occasions on various courses

Depends on the hole Oakey, some holes almost nil, sometimes like on 14 perhaps another 25 yards further back than the medals. Ironically some of the championship tees make it even easier as it takes certain hazards out of the equation and stops you getting too close to the green.

Re: Egos and Golf why do they clash!
plenty actually, some of the champ tees end up on other courses/driving range etc.
Played it off the yellows for the first time the other week, very short indeed.
distance though doesn't really make it much harder though because as long as you stay left on the way out and left on the way in you can't go wrong.
What they really need to do is grow the rough thick and narrow it up, put a premium on accuracy, as there are FAR too many bail outs.
I've seen guys hit it rubbish and shoot under par because bad shots simply aren't punished, you just end up playing it off a different fairway.
You certainly find youself thinking "got away with that one" rather than "give me a break" on that course.
A New/Old/Jubilee combined course would be excellent though.

Re: Egos and Golf why do they clash!
I remeber once playing a inks with a friend- Princes.
He was so wild he was hitting other fairways- he did that 9 times in the round- i hit the ball in the rough about 6 times and lost my ball 5 times!
He beat me being wilder./
grrr.
That is the thing about links for us ams!!
Its all well and good for the pros that have a 100 and 1 spotters.. But sometimes links are no fun for us

Won't come as any shock to you Mysti but 'twas I that questioned it. I was clearly right to question it as well because as it turned out was boollacks.mystiroakey wrote:Blue i have driven 4 par 4's in round and 2 on more than 20 occasions on various courses

Re: Egos and Golf why do they clash!
No I am not surprised it was you that questioned it.
You played addington palace last year didn't you.
Would it shock you if a golfer could hit the 4th , 5th and 15th in one round there. I mean yes tough to be that accurate , but very easy to get around the green in 1, even for regular to long hitters. Infact I and many cant even hit a driver on any of those mentioned holes in regular conditions of the back tees, a 3 wood is sufficient on the 4th and 5th and a driving iron or 3 iron with fade on the 15th
No I haven't rejoined- But I am rejoining next April, I still see my club as my club even though I am not this year or last year officially a member

Re: Egos and Golf why do they clash!
Depends what you call regular or long players mate. I'm a decent player and would consider myself regular (6am every morning......) but struggle to get it past 250-260 without wind assistance. In the scratch open I played in I'd be staggered if anyone hit more than one of those greens in any particular round. They're over 300yds mate.
When you say "your club" I take it you mean Croham yes? It's a shame with over 20 players that can hit all those par 4's in one they were unable to field a team of 6 sub 12 handicappers for this years Hilliard league match.

Its a shame because I used to play in it-but these days the golfing clique there dont bother turning up in that particular comp- but there are some real high quality members at croham, as there are at Addington palace and woodcote.

I'm guessing these "real high quality" members don't bother with the Surrey scratch either?
Either you've been out of the scene for too long or you're kidding yourself mate but with the exception of the elite few the standard of top amateur golf in Surrey is pretty poor Mysti.
Actually the standard of golf in general is pretty poor. It's definitely the pastime that those who've been rejected from all other sports figure they'll give a go.
I still maintain it's the best "sport" to be bad at.
So long as people enjoy themselves though and don't take it seriously then they're good with me.

Re: Egos and Golf why do they clash!
No they dont any more.
But there are a few(not going to name names) that should have played in the surrey amatuer 2011 but just didn't bother(held at Croham and palace). Its sad.. And I tell(one especially- good friend) a lot, he just cant be bothered.
However if your standard is that you have to be exceptional to hit 2 par 4's in one round on the average course then you are miles of base. As I have stated before i know plenty that have and i have hit the 3rd, 4th and 9th at my club 2 times that i can remember(possibly more) in one round.
So if thats your acid test(hitting 2 par 4's in a round) then yes there must be many expetional players at the clubs i mention..
It off course isn't mine in the slightest!! There are literally loads of players that have hit the 3rd and 4th on the spin, golf however isnt about length as we all know!!
If you had played croham you would understand about the 3rd and 4th.
and i am struggling to work out how you think the holes mentioned at the palace are so hard to hit in one(especially the downhill 4th and the 250 yard 15th!!)
PS: i didnt mention before that the 15th isnt 300 yards -but for accuracy it is no way near!

I must be mad to be getting into this with you Mysti but where did all this come from? I'm pretty sure that all I said was that I didn't believe Maverick had hit the 2 par fours in one he said he had. Later evidence suggests I was correct to question it.mystiroakey wrote:No they dont any more.

I also said that I'm a decent (I'm being modest, in comparison to the average I'm f=ing brilliant) player but only hit my driver about 250-260. I don't think it's a huge leap of faith to claim that someone who hits it 280+ in the direction they intend (to within a tiny fraction if they're hitting the green) more than say 1 in 10 is pretty exceptional.
If that makes you and all your 20 fellow members at Croham who can do likewise exceptional then so be it.

But isn't the point that if you hit the green wind assisted as it seems was mentioned then it's going to be very hard if not impossible to drive a green into said green. So the arguement over hitting greens isn't the actual point. It's the wind.
And aren't most standard golfers hackers who rarely ever hit a fairway let Sloane drive par 4s

Suppose it doesn't matter though as the guy was a fantasist bullcrapper so he probably didn't play golf that day let Sloane drive a par 4 into a strong wind.

Re: Egos and Golf why do they clash!
Mysti I don't really want to get into a big debate with you on this one mate, but with respect and despite the best efforts of Beninho and Hibbz you have completely missed the point! Of course you are correct in that most courses have par 4's that are reachable by the longer hitters, especially from the yellow tees...Christ I've even managed that feat on the odd occasion myself, with a rare strike out of the middle of the driver from the forward tees and aided by a hard summer fairway and a couple of favourable bounces!
The point was that our Walter Mitty character from Kent claimed that he had driven two consecutive par 4 holes on a particular course, assisted on both by a strong following wind. We were all amused when armed with personal knowledge of the course, that bright young detective Hibbz was quick to point out that the two holes run parallel to each other and are played in the opposite direction! I can't remember the exact length of the two holes but they comfortably exceeded 300 yards and whilst it was entirely probable that low handicap Walter could have driven the first hole, it was entirely improbable that even bombers like Dustin Johnson or Nicolas Colsaerts could drive the next hole considering it would have been straight back into the teeth of the howling wind!
Don't get me wrong I was taken in by Mav like most of us. Up until this story appeared that is.
