While a little before my time, and with a test record that is good rather than great, he was the only Scotsman to captain England and a stalwart of the county game, especially for Kent.

Saddened to learn of this although had heard recently he was very ill. Hoggy's comments as to his Test and county career are spot on.

A very fine servant to cricket. Thoughts go out to his friends and family.

In my youth it was forever Brian Luckhurst and Mike Denness opening for Kent - both fine players - and sad that both claimed by cancer. They must have been one of the most prolific and solid opening county partnerships of their generation.

A fine cricketer and the only one who has dropped himself for his poor performance.

Though many spoke of his cowardness but he looked for the benefit of the team. Hats off to this man. I am not fortunate enough to see him playing.
Mostly Indians recognize because of his decision to suspend six Indian players including Sachin in SA in 2001. Later that match was called unofficial bi ICC. But that is all part of the game. Cricket has lost one of its finest man.
RIP sir.
