SARU takes a stand with issuing new Springbok contracts.
Found this on a South Arican site, it seems SARU has made a decision not to award contracts to any Boks playing overseas.
And rightly so.
And rightly so.
The South African Rugby Union (SARU) today announced that 15 players, including exciting youngsters such as Eben Etzebeth, Marcell Coetzee, Juan de Jongh and Pat Lambie and world stars such as Jean de Villiers, Tendai Mtawarira and Bismarck du Plessis, have been awarded Springbok contracts for 2013.
The group – whose average age is just over 26 years – includes the core of the Springboks Test players from 2012, while players who are based overseas or who have signed contracts with overseas clubs, were not awarded national contracts.
“We’ve kept as many of our top players in South Africa as we could by awarding them national contracts, despite the powerful lure of the pound, euro and yen,” said SARU CEO Jurie Roux.
“We worked hard with the Springbok Management and Sarpa to ensure the best possible deal is placed on the table for the players. A further five contracts are still available and will be finalised in due course.
“Last year provided Heyneke Meyer with an ideal opportunity to see what is needed in the Test arena, and by contracting this group of players, we have secured a core group for 2013. The average age of the contracted group is not very high for Test rugby, which bodes well for the future.”
The following players, who represented the Springboks last year but will be leaving South Africa to play abroad in the next couple of months, were not awarded contracts: Andries Bekker, Juandré Kruger, Morné Steyn, Bryan Habana, JP Pietersen and Zane Kirchner.
“All six of these players were going to receive contracts, but the fact that they have indicated that they have signed with overseas clubs or are planning to do so, has ruled them out of the reckoning,” said Roux.
Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer said: “I’m very excited about the contract group. Most of these players showed last year they have what it takes to play for the Springboks and they can only get more experienced and improve further.
“Losing experienced players to overseas teams is not ideal, but it’s their right to further their careers abroad.”
The Springbok contract group is:
Name Province Test caps
Willem Alberts The Sharks 20
Marcell Coetzee The Sharks 12
Juan de Jongh DHL Western Province 14
Jean de Villiers DHL Western Province 84
Bismarck du Plessis The Sharks 46

Why didnt Johan Goosen and Schalk Burger get contracts yet Kirchner was going to get a contract until he decided to leave?
Is it because they are both injured? Surely not.

Goosen is out for the year and Schalk hasn't played rugby since the RWC.
Remember Goosen only played half a game for the Boks, that being said apparantly there are more players that will get contracts later.

So does not having a contract mean theyre not eligible for the RC etc this year, or does it mean 'We won't gve you a contract now but when we select the side we'll just take care of the paperwork then" kind of thing.

Oh yep. They'll need more than 15 or so but at least its a small sign od possibly things to come. Not a lot of bargaining power mind you.

If they do get selected they will only earn a match fee and if they win they will get the win bonus.
From what I understand the match fee is R40 000 and a win bonus R35 000
I do think it is important that these players know if they show commitment to other unions, they won't get any from SARU no matter who they are.
It is only fair to those who remain in SA.

Hopefully this common sense might spread to other countries too.
Cheers for the post bill, I think all of us Welsh lads are keen to find a great resolution to a similar player drain to that which SA face.
How do the SA contracts work in relation to the franchises?
Are teams compensated for player loss?
Do the Bok contracted guys also get a club wage?

From how I understand it the Bok contracts are totally seperated from the Franchise contracts.
In other words a player will be contracted by his province either on a Currie Cup contract or by the Super XV Frabchise he represents.
Players such as Willie le Roux has a contract with Griquas but a Super XV contract with the Cheetahs.
So in some cases where players represent one province in Currie Cup and another in Super XV he can have the Super XV top up.
Obviously the Super XV Francise will compensate the Alternative province for the use of their player in Super XV.
The Boks are then contracted over and above the franchise contracts.

Restructuring the NH season would solve so many of our issues.
So what you think RE Sa players uncontracted. Do you think this will encourage them to return home / discourage players leaving?

Well I suppose it is an important step for SARU, the next important issue is not to select them even when injuries are rife at home.
For me it is a clear cut issue.
You choose to go abroad, you don't represent SA. It is only fair that the guys who are commited to SA rugby get selected.
I like JP Pietersen, Habana etc, but the way I see it their priorities have moved on and therefor so must SARU.

Its a difficult environment out there its not just players being offered large money in contracts that affect decisions, agents can be persuasive people out for their own interests too.
I hope it works for SA. It will be interesting to see in the next squad selection how many players are not selected outside the homeland.

Re: SARU takes a stand with issuing new Springbok contracts.
Like I was saying on the other thread, I really hope this means you don't pick overseas players... because we need Ruan big time next season! Summer off would do him the world of good.
But there are still only 15 guys on this list- I guess its an indication of who is first choice, but whats to stop them filling up the rest of squad with overseas?
Time will tell. In the meantime, I'll be hoping some young 9 starts playing out of his skin and doing a rain dance for the continuing good health of Master Hougaard.

I think for the June series Meyer willgo with local talent only.
But come the Rugby Championship if he hasn't seen what hewanted he will be calling back some players.

We have a mini tournament lined up for June, Scotland, Samoa and Italy, so it will be an interesting month.

It'll certainly be a more interesting month Post-6N than it might have been considered to be Pre-6N! A chance for Scotland and Italy to test whether the upswing in fortunes continues to face up. And a tough, tough opponent to go look for answers to that question!
And Scotland might be without a decent number of first choices too. So Test rugby, for sure.

I knew JdV had lost a yard of pace, but didn't realise he was 84!
