NUKQ Lions
Two Tongans, two Maoris, two South Africans, a Samoan and 9 Irishmen walk into a bar, and the barman says, "well done on your selection for the British & Irish Lions tour to OZ lads".
This has surprised me.

You left out the 9 Irishmen in your NUKQs.
What's the point you're making?

Re: NUKQ Lions
So 'outsiders' contribute nothing to Welsh rugby, and now you have issue with players origins being outside of the british isles, despite them fullfilling the Qualification rules...
There is a trend here, and I don't like it Allty!!!

Re: NUKQ Lions
Have to say I agree with Alty on this one, I think it should be representative of home grown players, but then I beleive that for every international representative team
Pride, patriotism, tribalism and all that stuff.

Indeed, although my impression is the OP is in favour of 'T-eam W-ithout A-ny T-alent'
Still don't know what a NUCK is. Maybe I will make something up.

I dont think you have read my post Bluey.
I'm simply pointing out the origins of individual players not forgetting our Irish brothers.

Where do you draw the line?
Toby Faletau was about 7 when he moved to Wales, so has been here almost his entire school life and certainly his entire rugby life.
Manu T was 12 or 13, so was developed as a player by Leicester Academy.
Mako Vunipola was developed in the Bristol academy (and is New Zealand by birth although Tongan by ancestry) - haven't got the age he came to the UK, but certainly was while still at school.
Hartley (leaving aside that he shouldn't have been picked ahead of Best) came over to attend college at 17/18 and is EQ'd by ancestry
OK, I'd prefer it if we weren't picking players like Maitland, whose only link is ancestral and who has only been in the UK a year, but unfortunately a precedent has been set with picking the likes of Flutey for the last tour.

OK - it's a reasonable criterion, by which reckoning the first three I list are fine. Not sure which side of the line it puts Hartley (I assume he played a good amount of age group rugby in NZ).

Re: NUKQ Lions
Well let's use SA calling their U20 world cup squad as their 2nd team, anyone getting to our U 19 Currie Cup teams as "poaching" stars should not be allowed in any way.
Those kids were already identified at Craven week, which is our school system.

Re: NUKQ Lions
Allty - just a thought, you calss them as Non Uk Qualified, although they are qualified (well except the Irish) and have played international rugby for either Wales, England or Scotland.
That said I did comment yesterday about that Lions squad having a fair few players who were born in the Southern Hemisphere.

Re: NUKQ Lions
Vunipola is Faletau's cousin. Both dads came over to play rugby in Wales - Faletau's Dad Kuli for Ebbw Vale and Pontypool, and Fe'Ao 'Vinny' Vunipola for Pontypool and then I think Pontypridd. My mate worked with Mr Vunipola a while back as he went into surveying after rugby.
I think both sets of parents sent their boys to Filton College which has a good rugby academy. Toby was then snapped up by the Dragons but the Vunipola boys were signed by English teams.

And South Africa's rugby history is a great example of that.
