Tendulkar bats at 4.
Bradman is the best number 3 and the best ever.

Re: Number 3
I've just made a contribution on 606 encouraging posters there to join 606v2. I said one of main advantages of 606v2 was that you don't get endless posts on whether Tendulkar or Ponting is best! Lol - I'm sure on this site we won't have 100s of reruns of the the same argument and the debate will be civilised....

Re: Number 3
Dont worry Corporal. But as this is a new site this debate is new here. But if the same stuff pops up then it will be merged with the original article.

Re: Number 3
yes, me az. Lara was very very good, but even at his best you felt you had a chance of getting him at any time as he could be a bit impetuous. Ponting was sometimes an uncertain starter, but once he was in you felt he would never get out.

I dunno. When Lara was in, he remained in. A flashy batsman with wonderful hand ete coordination and amazing reflexes. I'd even rate him ahead of Sachin. Pontin was a tough and determined character, but I didn't even think he was the best Aussie batsman.

Ah well opinions opinions hey. Lara was a wonderful batsman by all means and fantastic to watch, but IMO you always felt you had a chance at getting him out. Ponting once he got past 20 or so I always felt was on his wa to a hundred.
Having said that neither of the two makes my all time XI, whereas Tendulkar does.

Hasn't Lara scored more tons than Pontin?
Your last sentence is very interesting. Your alltime 11? Imagine Haynes and Greenidge as your openers. Richards, Sachin, Pontin and Lara as your batsmen. Say Gilchrist as your keeper, who would you have as bowlers? Warne or Murali? Who would the speedkings be? I'd say Whispering Death and Marshall. No all-rounder (Sobers or Beefy?)

Re: Number 3
I voted Viv. Sachin will probably be remembered as the better cricketer, but that ability Viv had to hit even the best ball for four was brilliant. Even if he batted for an hour in a Test, he could take the game away from you. He thrilled you as a batsman in a way that even non hardcore cricket fans could appreciate. Only dedicated fans could appreciate Sach's glorious technique, but anyone could come and watch Viv bat, slashing and pulling boundaries and be taken in by the shear ferocity and awesomness of him.

Re: Number 3
Az, there's a thread right here discussing the all time world XI. Out of those you name, Richards and Sachin make up the middle-order. Ponting doesn't make it (Bradman was better), while Sobers takes the all-ounder spot. The bowling spots I justify there, I don't expect people o agree with my selection but I've gone for the best balanced attack rather than purely the best four bowlers.
For what it's worth, Ponting has 39 hundreds and Lara 34. This is somewhat balanced by the fact that Ponting played more cricket than Lara. Indeed the avergae number of matches played per century scored is remarkably similar (Lara shades it by 0.04 matches per century). Ponting does have a slight advantage if you look at number of innings per century (Lara scores a hundred every 6.82 innings, Ponting every 6.64). Not much in it really...
