Matthysse vs. Peterson: Catchweight @ 141lbs?!

... Can someone please explain this to me? What is the relevance of having a LWW fight at a Catchweight of 141lbs?!

Incidentally, Matthysee weighed in at 140lbs and Peterson has come in at 141lbs. If I don't recall, against Khan
Peterson's in ring weight was around 158lbs- quite an incredible gain from weighing in at 140lbs the night before.

Something to do with Matthysse not wanting the title as he'd lose his place as mandatory challenger for Garcia if he beats Peterson, whereas if its at 141lbs I believe win or lose he is still in line to fight for the WBC belt next which Garcia holds.

I think its so there is no IBF title on the line for Peterson.

Matthysse is a pretty big light welter as well so I would expect the pair to weigh a similar amount in the ring.

Matthysse is interim WBC champ, he has a shot at Garcia

He has wanted Garcia for ages now so obviously priorities him above Peterson

Peterson keeps his IBF belt win or lose and Matthysse gets a shot at the belt he wants and puts himself in a position that Garcia can't avoid him

Basically, it's to beat the system. As the WBC will not their belt to get unified?

Not sure if I quite understand, but if it allows the victor to face Garcia next without any political nonsense then I'm all for it.

Didn't Khan get made the number one mandatory earlier this week?

What happens to the unofficial GBP Tournament if Peterson wins? Winner fights Garcia but Matthysse would still be his mandatory, would Garcia just drop the WBC belt?

Crazy decision by lucas. When he loses expect him to lose his shot at Garcia also regardless if he's the mandatory or not.

If he loses with the IBF on the line then he won't fight Garcia anyway so can't see how its a crazy decision

•If the title is on the line, if he wins he might lose his chance against Garica

•If he losses when the title is on the line he losses both positions as WBC will drop him and Peterson will be Champ

•If he losses when the title isnt on the line he's in exactly the same as he would if it was

But if Peterson wins then he supposedly is due to fight Garcia, so will his IBF belt STILL not be on the line?? The IBF are doing a great job keeping Lamont (or LP for the moron) as their champion at light welter.

If the WBC won't allow a unification fight then Lamont should surely give the IBF. Up if he were to win.

As much as it pains me to say, WBC are the most corrupt sanctioning organisation.

Pointless having the catchweight then. I was under the impression that the weight was because Matthysse didn't want to lose his mandatory shot at Garcia if he loses to Peterson.

I can't say which is more corrupt. As far as I'm concerned they're all corrupt. The least corrupt one hasn't been formed yet.

Matthysse thought the catchweight would guarantee he shot as Garcia, but bizarrely the WBC said he'll to that.

Not sure how an interim 140 strap can be contended for at 141...

Pride fighting had competitions like that. Open divisions and all that. All over one day I believe. That's how the UFC was in its infancy. Royce Gracie who weighed about 160 beat all comers.
