Music Cup Round 1 - Songs from the decade you were born
First topic message reminder :
Here it is, the opening round of the Music Cup 2013. I'm sorry I couldn't think of a glitzier name.
We have a whole plethora of entrants and this round is wide open considering some of the songs put forward. If you didn't receive a PM from me telling you you got your second choice then you got your first choice.
You can select only TWO songs to vote for, and you may vote for your own if you're a filthy cheat.
Final note before the write ups - kudos to the man that selected Keep on Movin' by 5ive.
Write Ups:
Livin' On a Prayer by Bon Jovi - everyone knows the words, you're singing it right now in your head. Best 80s song bar none!
Bohemian Rhapsody (70's) - Although not the best song of the 70s, not even the best song by Queen, it is possibly the greatest song writing achievement ever. An iconic fusion of rock and opera, the song broke the norm of what was played on radio and considered cool.
There Is A Light That Never Goes Out - I was gutted I had to pick from the 80s until I remembered this band, and this tune. It still resonates with me today as one of the greatest songs ever written.
Rod Stewart - Sailing - Not a massive fan of 70's music but love this anthemic tune from good old Rod. Still sounds great today, which is something.
I just died in your arms tonight - Cutting Crew
Love this song, my favourite song of the 80's. The song has a brilliant intro that grabs your attention then Nick Van Eede excellent voice comes in "Oh I, I just died in your arms tonight, It must have been something you said........" and it has a beast of a guitar solo!!!
Ghost Town - The Specials
Unemployment, social unrest and racial tension powered ‘Ghost Town’, which caught the multi-cultural Specials at a politically febrile moment in time. The people of Britain were “getting angry”, and this was mirrored in the song's haunting production and sense of dislocation. More than a pop song, this was a brilliant piece of art-as-social-comment.
1) Kate Bush - Wuthering Heights - could possibly be the most unmistakeable pop song ever apart from Bohemian Rhapsody, a bit like having an orgasm while stoned & simultaneously hearing nails screeching against a blackboard
90's song-Cast No Shadow - Oasis. Favourite song off the 1st album I ever bought. Classic Oasis!
Under Pressure - Queen + David Bowie. An utter masterpiece combining two unique, different yet totally complimentary vocalists (one a fantastic singer in his own right, the other arguably the greatest pop music male vocalist of all time with a truly irreplaceable voice and incredible range. I'll let you decide which was the Thin Duke and which Freddie) filling the song with both prodigious singing skills and raw emotion. THE iconic bass-line of all time, great lyrics. Both Queen and Bowie have produced some classic songs but this combined the best of both
Superstition - Stevie Wonder .............. I remember this being played as a young kid , good songs don't get old they mature
1st nomination: Don't Look Back in Anger - Oasis
The so called "National Anthem of Britain", who hasn't sung along to this song at one point in their life (drunkenly or not) ? Did you know that before Liam pitched the line "So Sally can wait", Noel was apparently singing "So Jim'll fix it"?
1. Wings - Mull of Kintyre : Was apparently the song which would send me to sleep when I was a little grizzler, had a soft spot for it ever since I can remember.
The Beatles - I Am The Walrus
It's weird and wacky, it's classic pop but it's totally bizarre, it quotes King Lear and it was written on acid - it's everything a late 1960s song should be and more. A timeless work of genius.
Teenage Kicks - The Undertones: Iconic, simply put. You know each and every time this song gets airtime that immediately you're reaching for the volume button to turn up. It's universal as well, evn now it gets played on Radio 1 36 years after its release. The favourite record of John Peel and the favourite record of mine.

Can we have a consensus? If your song is in your genuine top 2 should you vote for it or not? I think we should all try and treat the competition in the same manner

Never had you down as the insecure type, Galted!
I wasn't until the Movie Cup happened. Thought I would redeem myself in the music version but not looking too promising so far.

I am sticking to my guns. I genuinely wouldn't put 2 songs above my choice (would possibly put Teenage Kicks above it but not Smells Like Teen Spirit) but it just all feels a bit of an anti-climax voting for my own all the way through.
I am going to rely on the wider forum to vote for mine (which is proving a silly tactic at the moment but hey ho).

Fair do's, if you want to vote for your own do it. Personally, I just think we shouldn't that's all.
Theoretically I would agree with you, would help to minimise tactical voting.

I am not a massive fan, but I do happen to really like the song on this list.
Then again, I am still in my 30's so I will let you know in a few years if that changes.

You can't believe that one of the greatest bands of all time is beating a bunch of northern bowl cuts?
They didn't even have a super cool rapper like J in the Beatles.

The bloody Smiths. Nirvana are my favourite band but I won't pick Smells Like Teen Spirit as its one of my least favourite of theirs. Can't say I'd expect many votes for mine, cracking tune is Modern Love though. Teenage kicks gets my vote just over Roxanne

Did some research. Apparently his name is Abz with a 'z'. Should have known really, the use of the letter 's' is all but disappearing these dayz.
Richard Abidin "Abz" Breen. He is a singer, rapper, dancer and DJ but never performed with The Beatles.

I always assumed he was called Abz because he had a washboard like torso.
Richard Breen may be the dullest name I've ever heard in pop music though.

Is it any wonder I stalk them with phat lyrics like this?
You gots to keep it real
You gots to keep it raw
I'm lyrically blessed so don't try to ignore
Time for some action creeping up your back and
Keep the beat nasty like Janet my reaction
Hard I'm addictive better lock your kids in
Coming to you area ya don't know what you're missing
Go tell your family here comes
The enemy blowing up the spot tech remedy
Everybody get up singing
1,2,3,4, Five will make you get down now
(Baby bring it on, bring it on now)
Everybody get up singing
1,2,3,4, Five will make you get down now

Re: Music Cup Round 1 - Songs from the decade you were born
I always preferred Slam Dunk (Da Funk)
- Do Not Read If Easily Offended:
- Five bad boys with the power to rock you
Blowing your mind so you gotta get into
Five, whatcha waiting four if you wanna
Three (three)
Two (two)
One let's do it
Do you wanna get freaky
when the five of us make one
You gotta push the good vibe on
If you really wanna feel it
Got da flava in my song
But I really need to know
Do you wanna get down
Do you wanna get funky
Do you wanna get down
Get on down
[Chorus:]
Slam dunk da funk, put it up
(If you got that feeling)
Slam dunk da funk, put it up
(If you got that feeling)
Slam dunk da funk, put it up
(If you got that feeling)
Slam dunk da funk
(put it up)
You gotta shoot, pass, slam baby time to set it off
I'll be up, up away, above the rim and hook a shot
Ally oop, baby, whoop, there it is and now I gotcha
Three seconds left, it's just enuff for me to rock ya
Now check it, how I flip it rock a beat 'cause
I get with it and everybody wants to be the man
with a hey, yippee yo yippee four quarter slam
everybody grab a party and just get on down
Do you wanna get down
Do you wanna get funky
Do you wanna get down
Get on down
[Chorus:]
Slam dunk da funk, put it up
(If you got that feeling)
Slam dunk da funk, put it up
(If you got that feeling)
Slam dunk da funk, put it up
(If you got that feeling)
Slam dunk da funk
(put it up)
You wanna know what hits you like a fork lift truck
We got J, AB, Rich, Sean and Scott rocking the extra
Curricular ladies love particular fella
Who knock da meter get the boom shake regular
Five bad boys, honey no, we don't quit til we hit
The rebound sound with a kick
So come on everybody, everybody in tune
As I boomshake n' rock a body
Gimme room
Clap your hands
Stamp your feet
Push it in, pull it out to the beat
[Chorus:]
Slam dunk da funk, put it up
(If you got that feeling)
Slam dunk da funk, put it up
(If you got that feeling)
Slam dunk da funk, put it up
(If you got that feeling)
Slam dunk da funk
(put it up)

No wonder they have as many votes as my choice.
I might get those lyrics tattooed on my body somewhere.

I hadn't even considered a boy band round, but that is definitely happening now.

Would the beatles, Stones and Queen be considered boy bands?
Re: Music Cup Round 1 - Songs from the decade you were born
The one criticism I would have of the first two rounds is that the categories have been very wide so far.
for example this round could have featured any song from the 60s to the 90s - thats 30 years worth of songs!

Absolutely not. We're talking Backstreet Boys, Westlife et al.
