Better Than Wilkinson? - Page 2 Empty Better Than Wilkinson?

Post by GloriousEmpire Tue 28 May 2013, 5:11 am

First topic message reminder :

With England now heir apparent for the 2015 World Cup, being the form northern hemisphere team and only side to have consistently beaten SH opposition and the All Blacks; and given that winning world cups at home is a mere formality; and the likelihood of a Lions victory with Owen Farrell at the helm... Then should these two likelihood a play out; leaving Farrell with both a Lions series win and World Cup to his name, would he then be seen as a better fly half than Wilkinson?

Where will the Lions score points from if Farrell plays for instance? He can't run a backline, and his England side looked toothless try wise for much of the 6N.

In terms of taking his kicks... will that be enough for the lions? Can the Lions win from just Farrell kicking 5/6 penalties for 2 out of 3 matches?

and even then can we rely on him? The only match I've seen him actually composed under pressure was in Dublin this year... the rest of the time he's faltered (MS, Port Elizabeth etc) or had someone else pulling the strings.

Farrell has a good England team around him with the ability to score.... just doesn't happen. You won't score off a garry owen.... not with Beale or Folau at 15... more likely AUS will score off them themselves.

Tend to agree with that, fa. He looked out of his depth on Saturday but then again if can recapture some of his Dublin form he might gain some confidence.

He can put up as many gerryowens as he wants... they'll be gifts for Folau and co. I think that sort of tactic would backfire against a Wallaby side who have some of the best markers of the high ball in world rugby. We can count ourselves lucky there are no Irish players in this Lions squad with strong Gallic football backgrounds.

Nothing to worry about. Sexton will play the tests. Farrell will pick up an "injury" and be sent home. A replacement (Biggar/Wilkinson?) will be flown out.

Allain Rolland is the Irish rugby man with the strongest links to France Whistle

Thinking of Gaelic football, reminds me of watching the cross codes fixture between an AI Gaelic team and an Aussie Rules select team. Carnage - somewhere in the fighting there was a ball game waiting to break out.

Actually you can make that 8 Mr Messanger, Sir "Tich" announced this morning for his services to Rugby.

Well from now on even if sexton plays halfpenny has to kick after Saturday because against Australia we are going to need the points that him and farrell missed its not as if they missed 1 each it was 2 or 3 each and its not acceptable in big games, so lets hope halfpenny kicks or Wilkinson turns up

With Carter injured I'm interested in the comparison between Sexton and Cruden over the next few weeks. Crudens in peak form so looking forward to that.

Kearney is injured anyway so it seems more and more likely that 1/2p will start.

I heard the ball was rather different to the ones they had been training with so with the humidity it could have had a big impact.

All will return to normal now the tour is in AUS.

They were using a rhino ball. I think they will be using a Gilbert for the rest of the tour or the test matches anyway. Most players had trouble passing. My guess is it was the conditions more so than the ball.

Their pro players they should practice with different balls being international players going to different countries knowing they use different balls its not an excuse. Only ball I wouldn't expect them to pass or kick tidy is a weighted ball.
