That is not too far off a team as good as last season, and with Jock Shingler playing at fullback, or Jordan I guess, we have a decent goal kicking option to relieve pressure of Rhys and let him do what he does best. And if your back line is playing a fluid flowing game, I have confidence that whoever is on the wing will be able to finish..

Int - I was thinking about the players likely to be involved in the HEC squad, which has a limited squad size, not the amount of players in west wales that are able to play rugby.

Re: Welsh Regions Signings/Departures/Rumours 2013 (Scarlets link with Blues winger Albert Nikoro)
I was thinking about pre-season friendlies, the Rabo, the LV and the Heineken. I've also considered some players may pick up injuries before or during the 2013/2014 season (and hence become unavailable for selection for a part/parts of the 2013/2014 season), a player may be rested for a part of the 2013/2014 season after a Lions tour, and some players may be away on international duty for a period/periods in the 2013/2014 season (Wales seniors, Wales U20s and Wales 7's); I believe strength in depth may be needed. But, you're right, the squad I picked is too large to be nominated for the Heineken Cup; I've named over fifty players and the Heineken Cup only allows squads of up to 38 players. However, I think it's good to have potentially over fifty players competing for a maximum of thirty-eight Heineken Cup squad berths, let alone the starting fifteen.
Does anyone know the date/time of the 'deadline' for participating regions/clubs to name their HC squads for the 2013/2014 season?
http://www.ercrugby.com/eng/heinekencup/rules/index.php wrote: 2. Eligibility of Players
(i) Each club must nominate a squad of up to 38 players. A minimum of 10 of the players nominated by the club must be capable of playing in front row forward positions. All such players must, on registration, be fully and properly registered with their club and Union and available to play for the club from that date.

Over the last few years we have feilded a fair few players in the pre-season friendlies, who have not really featured again, or not until the LV=, purely because they are not quite up to standards.
That said it will be interesting to see if this Rob Stevenson (is that the lad gypo found?) gets involved in pre-season.

So yesterday we said that it was nearly guaranteed that Rodney would sign for us, I wake up and now it's unlikely. What the f**k, I don't care what happens but we NEED to sign an 8 that is capable of what we require and Mccafrey doesn't do it for me personally because from what i have seen him in he doesn't look suite to what we want, I noticed he run up way to high when he ball carry's. Now it's says he is likely to g to the Blues, since when.
As for this winger he would have to be welsh qualified otherwise we will be way over the NWQ limit but again I can't think of a welsh winger with an 84% kicking success rate.
As for Timani i'm still not convinced he has signed.

Jhamer, no I wasn't in attendance, I'm going by what has been tweeted on the Crys16 twitter page and by posters on scarlet fever, can't see Crys16 posting it if it wasn't true. They are also the ones who mentioned us signing the winger with an 84% kicking ratio plus a new kicking coach.

apparently so'oialo representatives offered his services to the blues, without the blues seeking him out. guess looking for the highest bidder.......also some issues around his knee injury. gamble signing for either region.

At 34 he's a one season signing.
A sad indictment of the pulling power of the Welsh regions only a few years after Dai Lyons and Xavier Rush that we are both seriously considering an arguably semi-retired 34 year old.

THE Scarlets have added James Davies, the younger brother of British and Irish Lions centre Jonathan Davies, to their squad for the coming season.
The sevens specialist, who has starred for Wales on the IRB circuit, has been brought on board, along with another sevens speedster, Llandovery's Chris Knight.
Davies has been playing openside for Carmarthen Quins in the Welsh Premiership and will give head coach Simon Easterby added options in his back-row pool.
So too will Tongan Sione Timani, who has agreed a new contract. Timani had been released by the Scarlets at the end of last season, but a deal with French side Agen fell through because of their relegation from the Top 14, and he has been back training at Parc y Scarlets.
I think James Davies signing for the Scarlets for the 2013/2014 season is news that some of us know already, but Chris Knight signing for the Scarlets for the 2013/2014 season, I believe, is 'hot off the press,' so to speak. I think he'll compete for a wing berth at the Scarlets next season alongside the likes of Aaron Warren, Kristian Phillips, Kyle Evans, Iolo Evans, Jason Harries, Dion Jones, Rob Stevenson, Liam Williams and others.
Timani will be part of the Scarlets squad for the 2013/2014 season according to the above link, considered as a back row player; a 6 or an 8 I would imagine. I believe he'll provide healthy competition for the Scarlets six shirt next season; alongside the likes of Aaron Shingler, Josh Turnbull and Lewis Rawlins, and compete with the likes of Sion Bennett, Rob McCusker, Craig Price and Stuart Leach for the eight shirt. The only downside is he's not WQ.

So we have resigned Timani and brought in a bunch of amateurs from the premiership. They ad better prove themselves.
No news on an 8 then, absolutely pathetic. What were they thinking re-signing Timani, there is absolutely no logic behind it.

No logic? He was one of your best players last season... And is a lot damn better than Shingler, Turnbull, McCusker, Rawlings... Price looks good but he hasn't really played enough for the Scarlets to show if he is that good. Have the Scarlets offered Price a contract?

Yes there is NO logic being it from our point of view. The coaches clearly don't think much off him and don't/didn't play him half as much as we should have. He is a great player (not better than Shingler though) but we won't use him very much, it will just be like before.
He will be a back up and he will be taking up a NWQ spot which we need for wingers or an 8 who will be starting the bigger games. It's a waist of a NWQ spot.
He isn't going to get in at second row and the coaches are going to pick the likes of Shingler, Turnball and Mccusker in front of him. So even though he is a good player there is no point in buying him;

But now they may, just may finally realise that he is the best in his position. It's no coincidence that the Scarlets play better when Timani and Gareth Davies are on the pitch. Ever since he took over Easterby's selection policy has been terrible. I think you could also do with mixing the midfield up a bit, Williams and JD2 isn't working.

Saint- I hope Timani does get a run of games at 8, see how he goes, he's a good ball carrier and has played really well on occasions in the back row, I just hope he can show a bit more consistency this season. I agree with mixing up the midfield, for all of the positives in defence that a jd2/Williams partnership usually brings I'd like to see Gareth Owen or Steve shingler have a crack at 12, I think we need more of a ball player there, maybe it'll give Scott Williams a bit of a kick up the arse, I thought he was poor last season.

Buzz, I forgot about GO and Shingler, they cover 10, 12 and 15 very well. Going by their experience and abilities I would say Owen is better at 12 than Shingler, but not as good at 15. They're both ball players which is exactly what you need. I agree with Timani coming in at 8, perhaps with Barclay and Aaron Shingler on either flank.

Re: Welsh Regions Signings/Departures/Rumours 2013 (Scarlets link with Blues winger Albert Nikoro)
I thought the Scarlet's backline looked pretty potent early last season with Scott Williams and JD2 in the centre and Priestland at 10. Then a combination of Wales squad duty, struggling scrum and Priestland's injury (and no established cover at 10) took the sting out of the attack.
Gareth Owen's defence is too flaky for 12, he looks good at 15 though but Sanjay is by far the best 15 in the squad. Hopefully forward parity and a fit Priestland will restore the edge to the Scarlet's backline. They do badly need to recruit at least 1 quality wing. The prospect of playing "revolving doors" Phillips or one of a number of players such as Maul, Jordan Williams, Sanjay, etc., out of position, for a whole season cannot be filling their fans with any confidence.

Seagultaf- Scott had a great game against Leinster in the first game of the season but after that he went down hill quickly, he kicked a lot of possession away and butchered a few 2 on 1 chances throughout the season, so much so I was calling for the inclusion of Gareth Owen or Adam warren at 12. I agree that maybe Owen a bit to flakey in defence for a 12 though. I've got a feeling we may see a fair bit of Steve Shingler or Jordan Williams at 15 with Sanjay and Kyle Evans on the wings, so as you say we definitely need to bring in at least 1 quality wing.

Re: Welsh Regions Signings/Departures/Rumours 2013 (Scarlets link with Blues winger Albert Nikoro)
Sanjay is a good wing but an exceptional 15, it would be a waste of his talents if he is used extensively out of position. Jordan Williams has played on the wing and in the senior game that may be his best position. I have not seen Kyle Evans so can't comment. If Jock Shingler is as fast as his brother (was before he bulked up) he may be an option on the wing. Overall I think the Scarlet's will struggle without recruiting a quality wing to replace; North, Fenby and Stoddart.

Re: Welsh Regions Signings/Departures/Rumours 2013 (Scarlets link with Blues winger Albert Nikoro)
Sanjay is a far better full back than wing, so I'd prefer to play him there although he does tend to be a bit blinkered at times when counter attacking, as he tends to ignore supporting players opting to try and beat his man or take contact instead. I don't think Steve Shingler has the pace to play on the wing but from the little I've seen and heard of Kyle Evans he is an absolute flyer, apparently one of the quickest to have played for the scarlets. I agree however we will struggle if we don't pick up a quality winger, I'm not looking forward to watching another season of Kristian Phillips urine poor attempts at tackling!

Look we will have t wait ans see I guess. Rob and Timani have about the same experience at 8. But we do need to get our selection right, personally i would prefer Timani at 8 instead of rob because he offers more at ball carrying.
Our selection wasn't the best last season, i still can't understand why Phil John was our leading tight head, why turnball was ahead of Johnathan Edwards at 7, why we didn't sign an 8 and tries to convert a 6 to the position, we didn't bring Adam warren in sooner after he had recovered from injury. I will admit that Scott didn't have the best of seaosn win the scarlet's jersey but with Rhys steering the ship and bossing the back line, i hope he will be better next season.

Apparently the 84% kicking success rate winger that the scarlets we're chasing is Frazier Climo.

All depending WRU approval.

Climo is not really a winger, he's a 10 and he was the darling of my club Ayr for many years (2009-2011). Climo is famously the 'one that got away' from Scottish rugby a couple of years ago. He was the best 10 in the Scottish Hydro Division One (the Scottish top club league) by some distance but Glasgow fannied around with his offer as Fraz was carrying a hamstring injury at the time and Taranaki (whom he played for as a boy) stepped in to whisk him away.
The SRU got serious brickbats for that at the time and quite rightly as he looked very special indeed. And feic everything else I think he might be Scots qualified.

Thanks for the info George. It's all dependent on WRU approval, so no means a done deal yet.
Think we are singing him as a wing, and for his 84% kicking rate ( take some pressure of Priestlsnds kicking) Does he have any pace?
Decent signing then?

Yes, he was a very quick 10 and scored a lot of tries. I think it's potentially a very good signing, although of course you need to see what pops out the other side when you stick anybody into a professional conditioning programme. I honestly believe he'd be competing for the Glasgow shirt right now at the expense of Rhubarb Jackson if Glasgow had done what they should have in 2011.pioden gorllewin wrote:Thanks for the info George. I can't see him making much of an impact, unless he has had a lot of game time with Taranaki? Sounds like another good move by Scarlets though, a move that may be ruined by a daft selection policy in time.

Climo notched up 115 points through six tries, 17 conversions and 17 penalties from his 10 appearances for taranaki, so not a bad strike rate. be a really good addition to the region if we can get it approved.

Re: Welsh Regions Signings/Departures/Rumours 2013 (Scarlets link with Blues winger Albert Nikoro)
Pioden - some of my fellow Scots have confirmed that Climo is unlikely to be SQ as he left Ayr before the minimum SQ residency period had been satisfied. As this works on the basis of continual residence, there's no danger in him being away in the international windows. If that's true (jury is still out because he did play for at least 3 seasons), bad news for Scotland, good for the Scarlets.
Incidentally, I think that Climo has been top points scorer for Taranaki every year he's played for them. That's not bad when your competition is Beauden Barrett.

George having looked a bit further into it he would have been Scottish qualified but apparently fell though a loophole by going back to NZ during an off season for 3 months and it bumped him back 2 years on his residency criteria.

Re: Welsh Regions Signings/Departures/Rumours 2013 (Scarlets link with Blues winger Albert Nikoro)
I think the Scarlets are unable to sign Frazier Climo because he is not Welsh Qualified. I understand the Welsh regions are allowed up to 6 NWQ players in their squads for the forthcoming season (I think this number ought to be reduced to two or three and eventually to zero). As the Scarlets already have 6 NWQ players in their squad (for the 2013/2014 season); Jacobie Adriaanse, Deacon Manu, Joe Snyman, George Earle, Jon Barclay and Sione Timani, I believe they are unable to sign Frazier Climo, unless he is Welsh Qualified.
If that's the case, I believe there is nothing to worry about; I believe the Scarlets are already very well covered on the wings for the 2013/2014 season; Kyle Evans, Kristian Phillips, Aaron Warren, Chris Knight, Iolo Evans, Jason Harries, Liam Williams and others are competing for berths there and will continue to compete against each other for berths there, I would suspect, throughout the 2013/2014 season, which can only be healthy for the Scarlets.

They can register them for a feeder team and "call them up". I think that is the loop hole anyway. Isn't Timani a Quins player?

As far as I know, NWQ Sione Timani is registered with the Scarlets for the 2013/2014 season. I believe he (Timani) may be 'dual registered' with the Scarlets and the Carmarthen Quins for the forthcoming season, but that would still mean that he is registered with the Scarlets as a NWQ player. NWQs Jacobie Adriaanse, Deacon Manu, Joe Snyman, George Earle and Jon Barclay are also registered with the Scarlets for the 2013/2014 season, as far as I know. I'm unsure if they are 'dual registered' with any club within the Scarlets region for the 2013/2014 season.

Our Chairman Nigel Short, when asked about NWQ's & Player Registrations at a recent supporters meeting, said that he could "be here for hours" discussing the why's & wherefores of the subject, & everyone would be none the wiser at the end. It really is a complex "agreement" that does have loopholes & special dispensation clauses"
Think Deacon Manu is being registered with the RFC.....also some loophole with Timanai and the Quins. But international is right Scarlets have offered him a contract.

Robin Davey tweeted saying not truth in rumours of Coombs to Scarlets. That rumour had died of death a while ago, so not too sure why Davey needed to bring it up again.

WalesOnline.co.uk is reporting that 'former Wales captain Gareth Davies is poised to become the new chief executive of Newport Gwent Dragons.' If this is true, I hope he'll be on a lower salary than the current Dragons chief executive, Chris Brown.

They also mention in the article how 'the Dragons are believed to have the smallest debt of Wales' four professional rugby regions.'

Robin probably still has a few contacts within the region, but not as many as he makes out. The Coombes rumour is about 3 months old if not more. Never thought Coombs would come to the Scarlets as an 8 (that was the rumour) Coombs is an lock or 6. Both positions we are well stocked with at the moment.
Robin Davey has also tweeted it looked likely that the Dragons weren't signing a centre. Has Tuilagi been officially released? Nothing came of the link with London Welsh Tonga'uiha?

Poiden you were slow with this one, I was just talking to Jack Jones's farther and he has told me that Jack has been given a three year contract from the Ospreys, well done Jack. Let's hope that Ianto and Alyn bring him on up to their standards.

read an article the other day on jack jones:
http://www.thisissouthwales.co.uk/Jones-looking-follow-proud-family-footsteps/story-19578543-detail/story.html#axzz2akC5HY48
Fair play he comes from good stock, and to captain Swansea RFC at 18 is impressive. Ospreys conveyor belt of bringing youngsters through is impressive. Lloyd Peers, Rhodri Hughes & Jack Jones are all good prospects to take the baton off AWJ & Ianto one day.

Robin tweeted about the Coombes rumour because someone mentioned it on one of the sites (maybe Dragged Up) The info regarding the non signing of the overseas centre came when the chairman vetoed the signing just before Lyn was announce as new coach, probably because new coaches need to input on who is signed - Robin seems to have got that one spot on too
