The fact is i don't have a clue on the limit and laws on NWQ players and neither does anybody else (even thought they pretend to know).
Only the Scarlet's board will know.
Personally an 8 is the most important and we NEED to use a NWQ spot for an 8. If we can sign this Climo and still sign a NWQ 8, then why not. But our main priority must be an 8. I don't' know much about this Climo and don't really think much of the rumor because there has been at least a dozen now. But i do trust we can find and sign a suitable player.

You have Timani to play at 8. You aren't going to get a better 8 than that. Reckon McCusker will keep him out of the team? Rolling Eyes

You don't know that though, i haven't seen him play 8 before. If you have and he was good then ok. Have you seen hi play 8 and if so what was he like ?
Apart from that, yes they will favor Rob instead of Timani.

Not sure if its been mentioned above, but I'm hearing So'oialo may not be going to Blues or Scarlets after all, having apparantly demanded too much cash.

No mention of what sort of money he wants, only that the Blues think its too much given that the guy is 33 and may have a dodgey knee.

The guy is massive, and a good ball carrier. What more do you need? Theyprobably will favour Rob though unfortunately. It's a shame for Rob because when he began his career at the Scarlets he looked extremely good.

So MJ says that Scarlets are still in the market for an 8?

Cannot believe Rodney will be worth the money - he's a journeyman now, really, in the purest sense and all reports point towards his attitude sucking quite a lot. Why not make Gareth Delve an offer? WQ and has had a very good couple of seasons fighting a losing cause as Rebels captain.

Surely that's all the go-forward and leadership that Jones could want?

With the selling of George North i think it's a bit of a disgrace the Scarlets couldn't bring in Delve (he is off to Japan).

Or maybe the coaching staff doesn't rate him that much to break the bank for him.

I believe it was Danny Wilson the scarlets forwards coach who said a while back that Delve had been an option but was to expensive for them. Regardless of the money we've had from the sale of North, he'd be able earn a great deal more in Japan. As much as I'd liked to have signed Delve I wouldn't want us to break the bank for him especially as we have players like John Davies, Rhys Priestland and Scott Williams out of contract at the end of the season so I'd prefer to see the money spent to help retain the them. In all honesty I'd be surprised if we get an 8 in now, I think our 8's next season will be Timani and mccusker, doesn't fill me with confidence really.

How about Sion Bennett and Craig Price?

Craig Price and Sion Bennett are both 6's, I think we've got enough 6's being converted to number 8's as it is. Price and Bennett have very little or no experience at rabbo level and it would be a big ask for either to come in and be expected to do the job we need done at 8.

I think you're right about Sion Bennett being primarily a six, however...

Timani, Price and Bennet could all do well at 8 I reckon. Shingler is seen as the incumbent 6, so it makes sense to give Timani a lot of game time at 8 when you consider that Price could be with the Sevens team and Bennett the U20s.

From what i have seen Craig Price isn't the big bruising 8 needed, he is more of a pacey 8.

Dan Baker would be a great pick imo, as he is behind Bearman and Allen at the Ospreys.

Yes he has played once at 8 for the scarlets, hence my comment that he lacks experience in the rabbo. Craig IMO does not have the physical presence we require at 8, he is more of a ball playing 6 than a dynamic ball carrying 8 which we need, he's a decent enough player to cover the whole of the back row in case of injury or in the lv cup but nothing more than that really.

As far as I know, Bennett's Wales U20s career is over; according to the Carmarthen Quins website, he turns 20 in November 2013.

http://www.carmarthenquinsrfc.co.uk/Teams/Player?PersonId=151292

I believe Wales U20s' next fixture is against Italy U20s in January/February 2014 in the U20s Six Nations.

As far as I know, a player needs to be WQ and under 20 years of age on the 1st of January 2014 to be eligible to represent Wales U20s in that fixture.

197, that was just an assumption of mine, because a fair few of the most recent U20s crop are still eligible next season. Thanks for pointing that out.

Well that's a good mix to have. Scarlets are well stocked already in the back row and you can't possible get more unbalanced than Turnbull, Edwards and McCusker starting at 6, 7 and 8. So I'm not sure why would want to nick from the Ospreys. Bearman is close to retirement and Allen is yet to nail down a spot in the team, so Baker is well in the mix, especially now that he's capped.

I assume the Scarlets will not be signing Stuart Leach or Ed Price, two Llanelli RFC no.8s, for the 2013/2014 season? I think they would provide good competition for the likes of Sione Timani, Rob McCusker, Sion Bennett, Craig Price and Lewis Rawlins for the Scarlets number eight shirt next season.

International- have you seen all of the above play regularly? I'll b honest I haven't seen all of the above play play but have seen most of them, Rawlings an 8? I've seen him play as a flanker and he seems way to lightweight for an 8. Just because a player is playing premiership rugby as an 8 doesn't mean he is any ware near being good enough to be a regional player. For example, Kieron Murphy was an average squad playing 8 in the rabbo but when he played 8 in the premiership he was head and shoulders above everyone else, Kristian Phillips really stood out in premiership on the wing but was poor in the rabbo, basically what I'm trying to say is there's a hell of a step up between the premiership and rabbo and at a the moment I'm not sure if we have anyone within the region who can step up as a robbo/Heineken cup number 8.

If Rodney want's to be greedy, then let him. He will disappear into a low rated top 14 side like Agen. He has the chance to play top flight rugby again but he is wants more money. If we wanted him that much I think we could sign him but they obviously have their doubts which gives me the impression that he is a definite no go signing.
As for Sion bennett and Criag Price, that would just be a stupid call. If we were to make them our 8 then what would have been the point of letting Kieran go. It's because we need a different styled number 8 than Murphy which is why we let him go. Sion and Craig are 6's and thats where they should stay. We don't want another repeat of Mccusker do we.
The strength we have at 6 is ridicules but at 8 is also ridiculous (but in a different context)

international, please take the hint from other posters and stop listing every player within the Scarlets region available in a certain position. Try to understand that the Scarlets need someone of the calibre of Ben Morgan or David Lyons or, failing that, a proven player who will first choice at number 8 and more than capable of driving the ball up in the Rabo. Merely naming 30 kids who the Scarlets could pick at 8 proves nothing.

I think it's acceptable to be 'greedy' at 34. It's his last, or penultimate, contract, and therefore pay package as a player. He's going to go for as much as he possibly can. There's no way he'd move to Wales to earn less than he is in Japan, and any notion of professional desire or will to win things in Europe is, as an ex All Black, almost certainly gone; going to Japan is in essence a semi-retirement at that age anyway. Would have been a poor signing for either region anyway. I would have thought the Blues would have really tried to offer Delve an acceptable wage, as it surely wouldn't have to match a Japanese offer, only to be in the same region (no pun intended), for him to come home.

But it seems no other teams realy want him. Looks like no English, new zealand or big french club want to try their chances with him. If he wanted to play if top flight rugby we or the blues would have been his best option. He has the chance with us but he want more money and it looks like no other team is willing to do that because of his conditioning. He can't really be icky by the sounds.
He could have played in the Heienken cup again but wont have the chance because i can't see any Irish or top french/english clubs signing him.

Good news for Welsh rugby and the Dragons. Let's just hope that Halfpenny, Sam, Adam, Alyn Wyn, Ian Evans and John Davies follow the same course. Good on ya Toby Very Happy

It would be great news if Toby stays. He'll still be worth a fair bit in a few years' time if he wants to leave then - he might even be worth more than he is now.

Until 2016? Great news. I wonder what Lyn Jones said to him... Now all he has to do is keep the next up and coming 8 at the Region.

This gives Ieuan Jones plenty of time to develop without too much pressure. Great to see the Dragons making so many positive announcements.

Evans was out of contract at the end of last season and I am not sure what his plans are.

Alyn Wynn and Adam Jones are Ospreys until the end of next season, I think Sam, Jon Davies and Halfpenny the same for their respective regions.

I think we'd have heard something if Warburton, JD2 and Halfpenny had signed for the Os!

Martin Muller isn't coming to RP now. It looks like he's signed for the Lions (I think) in SA

I'd heard we weren't happy that he's played so little rugby over the last couple of seasons. If that's what's swung it for us, then I agree with the decision.

What a schmuck! Either he's broken a contract or the region has been very silly announcing his signing before a contract was secured.

Yep, if this is true then fair enough.  I think the Muller signing might have been pre- Lyn Jones?  Perhaps he's had a look and thought, nah that's not how I operate (taking a punt on an untried/un-played player).

That's a good point, he was 'signed' (in inverted commas because it can't have been that binding) before Lyn Jones's appointment

Yes, what a mistake that was. They deemed him too small at under 20 level and let him go to the Blues...! Mind you whoever advises on Fullbacks at Llandarcy is not the best, Fussell is appalling and Ross Jones shows bags of promise.

We let Prydie go when injured too, now look at how well he is doing at the Dragons.

I was looking forward to seeing muller pull on a dragons shirt, think he could have been successful as earle & snyman have been for us. but like it has been mentioned, he wasn't a lyn or kingsley signing. maybe kingsley knows a monster of a Russian lock that available.

maesteg you could add gareth owen to the list of good fullbacks ospreys let go. know he's was plagued with injuries while at the ospreys. but he found a bit of form for us last season, and there is no doubting his potential.

Definitely...!

Good player, shame he had so many injuries but he really is a talented lad, great centre too. Fussell seems to have done something that really impressed the lads at Llandarcy, I dont see it myself.

Sure that Ian Evans, Adam and Alyn wyn are all out of contract at the end of this season. IM sure about John Davies and Halfpenny as well. I'm sure i heard that Sam was as well.

Also where did you lot hear that the Muller deal had fallen through? Anyway, if it has then they should still work on signing Ian Gough. Would be great and h is welsh qualifed for you.
Why was it Muller's deal that fell through couldn't it have been Talei's Whistle
They have 3 good number 8's now for a few season and we have nothing

Gough would be a useful guy for the Dragons, and a player that the Ospreys are likely to use less this season as their new lads get more games.

Andrew Hore declares new Osprey template for signing players:

ANDREW Hore has underlined that the great Filo Tiatia will be the template for future recruitment at the Ospreys.

The region believe their charismatic No. 8 to be their finest ever overseas signing, with the New Zealander not costing the earth but proving an unqualified success during his four-season stay at the Liberty.

And the Ospreys reckon that spectacular value-for-money coup they achieved in capturing Tiatia, who made 99 appearances for them between 2006 and 2010 en route to becoming a club legend, should point the way for their dealings in the transfer market in the campaigns ahead.

"It is a question of being smart in the way we do things," said Hore, the region's chief executive

"It isn't about getting another Filo. But it is about getting value for money. He was superb for us in that respect, not just on the field but with the way he conducted himself off the pitch as well.

"He set an example and gave everything for the shirt.

"The big mistake many entities make is in thinking if they sign a big name it is guaranteed to make their team stronger. When Filo came in, he wasn't especially heralded. But by the time he left, everyone knew about him."

Hore continued: "Steve Tandy and Andy Lloyd have a big emphasis on having the right kind of people in our squad and I applaud them for that.

"Of course, a big name can sometimes come off. Look what Gary Teichmann did for Newport.

"But if you are prepared to search there is every chance you will hit upon someone who could do a great job without costing a huge amount."

The Ospreys may have missed out on a trophy last season but Hore doesn't believe they took a step back.

"Given all the changes that were happening, the guys did extremely well," he said.

"We were a gnat's nose from being in the semi-finals of the Pro12 and in the middle of the campaign the Liberty was rocking. We had some strong European performances and some big wins in the league. Home and away we beat every other region, so there were a lot of highlights.

"Now it's a question of pushing on."

Great news on Toby staying. Ian Gough was due to join Dragons but after a health check it was decided to put the move on hold. Muller has signed for the Lions who are back into the S15.

http://www.supersport.com/rugby/sa-rugby/news/130805/And_now_the_Kings_exodus_begins

So now we don't have a lock joining the dragons and Ian Evans who worked under Lyn before is out of contract do you think he may make a move?

I cant see ian evans moving from the ospreys to be totally honest, I don't mean to be rude/offensive to the dragons, but why would he? he has been at the ospreys for so long, and through them he has gained welsh caps and toured with the lions, has a great partnership with Alun Wyn and the front 3 of the ospreys.
