Which will be the most profitable fight of all-time? Canelo vs Mayweather. Or Rios vs Pacquiao.

Heading into the the second half of the year, I have a genuine feeling that the two most profitable fights of all time are about to take place. Canelo vs Mayweather, being on a Mexican holiday, and being on American PPV, is going to rake in big time. No doubt about it. At $60, I think it might do upwards of 2 million, marketed well (hopefully no more random doccies about Floyd, with his opponent also getting some screen time).

But, Pacquiao-Rios is in uncharted waters. A PPV in China, early morning broadcast, for a good American time. It might go nuclear. Rumor has it the fight is going to cost $5 in China. With 250 million Chinese cellphone users... It could be the beginning of a brave new world. A lot of this fights Chinese sales is reliant on Arum convincing Chinese superstar Zou Shiming to join the card.

Which fight is going to make more? The Pacquiao fight should sell more, but the disparity in price makes for an interesting contest. Thoughts?

Would be amazing if Pacman managed to sell over 2-3 million PPV's and would prove to be a very astute business decision.

China is a huge market for just about everything, one of the richest countries on the planet and they have the infrastructure to stay there for a long time.

Would love it if boxing really takes off there as I could quite easily get myself a business trip over there to coincide with a decent fight.

What would also be interesting is if the Pac fight does go massive and not only gets better numbers than any previous PPV event but also makes more money, would that make Pacman the biggest fighter of this generation?

But I think Pacquiao is going to have to 600-800k in the States. But he needs 20-30 Million PPV buys in China. Its a huge ask, but who knows.

It's an interesting one, because we're still unsure of how big the demand for fights in China is. That said with the population of the country and the fact its only $5 and its also being broadcasting in the states men's it could do huge. Shimming alone is a huge figure for the Chinese and Pacquiao is an Asian icon. Rios will bring the fire and pacquiao will make it look good

Floyd-Canelo is a little easier to predict. Will get a minimum of 1.5mil PPV buys and is very possible that it could get to 2million+. Each one of those will be at $60 a buy or $70 for HD (which is more popular than standard atm with a ratio of 2:1 in favour of HD for floyd's last fight) and will make well over $100mil revenue. With huge promotional ventures, huge sponsorships and huge gate receipts

It'll be interesting but i'd pip Floyd-Canelo in overall revenue made by a considerable amount

Maybe Manny should stick a few sumo fights on the undercard....

manny will make more money in this fight than mayweather. I just think the Chinese market is massive and manny is an asian icon.

manny fight will sell massive in asia and also America whilst the floyd fight will sell in America and Mexico.

Canelo Mayweather will make more I reckon. May even break the barrier set by De La hoya/Mayweather, but won't do as many numbers.

Thats my thinking too, CS. I can see Manny breaking PPV buy records, but how many will he sell? I think 30 million will be remarkable. Some are saying 100 million. Thats too ambitious, but I think that 30M is quite possible.

Pacquiao Sales. China: 40m buys x $5= $200m, US: 600k buys x $ 60= $36m

Mayweather Sales. US 2.5m buys x $60= $150m

Pacquiao destroys Mayweather in the money stakes on the above assumptions. However, if Floyd does do 2.5m sales, Manny needs to do 30m buys in China to break even.

I think Manny will win this one.

The fact it is the first mega fight in China will result in loads of people buying it.

Mayweather vs Pacquiao in China would have made it a super event just because of the fight and the entire worlds media running round desperate to get a word in with either fighter, trainer, groupie involved. China loves that stuff. Pacquiao vs rios doesnt have quite that magic to it.

Thats why Shiming needs to be on the card.

I don't think Trussman appreciates China is the world's biggest superstar and they idolise their national sporting heroes.

This fight will break records, that's for sure. Pacquiao vs Rios is actually the perfect fight as it guarantees entertainment.

If he does, he needs to demand a 90/10 split if he ever fights Floyd, since he is bringing the money!!
