Who would YOU start against the Wallabies (hooker)?
The 606v2 Lions Selection Hooker
Alright guys!
I figured we could get this going to give us a bit of a heads up on the general consensus of opinions for Lions Test shirts. We'll have a starting XV in no time BUT I am going to leave vote cancelling on so people can change their minds over the next 8 days or so.
Keep the debate honest and punch above the belt.
ps: remember this is not a prediction, it is a "who would YOU select" poll.
Youngs
Great guy to have in the loose, very dynamic and won't mind the Aussies throwing the ball around a fair bit, he will manage to keep up with a quick game better than the other two. His throwing has been poor but probably better than the other two options. He is getting a go with what looks to be the Test front row which could help his cause.
Hibbard
Had an absolutely outstanding 6 nations where he was very accurate out of touch and a bit of a demon in the tight exchanges using a lot of power be it in the tackle, carry or the ruck. He like the other hookers has missed more lineout throws than he would care to remember but the scrum has gone well with him at 2 and he would bring a physicality the Aussies may find hard to deal with.
Best
Arguably 1st choice in December or January his form has nose dived since February. He had a very poor 6Nations (by his standards) and despite doing well domestically he was never to the fore the way he was before Christmas and last year. His throwing has been very poor but he brings a lot to the table in the breakdown area where he is very strong and to the tackle area where he not only effective in the amount of tackles but in the quality of slowing ball.
Ok guys get the debate started and get the votes coming in.
Much love.

Youngs for me. He's been the best on Tour so far.

I'm maintained that I would just like the coaching team to pick the best player on tour. Youngs has been that best Hooker for me so get's my vote.

He gets a shot on Saturday which he kinda has to take. It is hard to see past the physicality that Hibbard brings IMO. He could really dominate the tight if left to do his thing in those close quarter exchanges. Youngs will be able to keep up with play more.
I think gatland will want a pretty structured game and if that means slow and powerful then his bet is probably Hibbard no?

Re: The 606v2 Lions Selection Hooker
In some ways I worry about both Youngs and Hibbard.
Youngs lacks bulk in the scrum... something we'll need to put the AUS pack on the backfoot. Don't underestimate the AUS scrum, they will have had 1 thing on their mind since they've met up 1 month ago.... scrum, scrum, scrum. Alexander, Sharpe & Robinson are no mugs.
Hibbards throwing is a little out of shape. He's gone a little mental on the tour, throwing himself around like its his last match ever and perhaps its affected his throwing composure.
Best - not on form. A good happy medium had he been on form.
Where is Dylan Hartley when you need him???

I've gone for Hibbard, but it's so close between him and Youngs right now.

Re: The 606v2 Lions Selection Hooker
Hibbard all the way - an absolute bullock who will put some fear into the aussies like he did in his last game in the 6 Nations. An absolute beast in the loose who has the power and nous to deal with anything put in front of him.

If we go for Vuni and Youngs who are both dynamic and maybe a little less powerful in the tight are we creating an unbalanced front 5???

Adam Hibbard Corbisero - We need the power there

Re: The 606v2 Lions Selection Hooker
Went for Youngs, Hibbard has been good but Youngs I think has been more accurate in the lineout and has been dynamic in the loose.
Rory, Rory, Rory your throwing needs to improve if you want to get involved for the 2nd and 3rd tests.

That's a perfectly reasonable rational Ruby, you would create options for dynamic players outside that I assume?
I personally would go for this....
Vuni- On form. He carries well in the medium channels.
Hibbard- Effective in the tight, maul, pick and go, defense.
Cole- Good scrumming player and very effective at ruck time.
I think that has a really nice balance to it.

radge - Englands line out was poor in the 6 Nations - We're judging Youngs again on weak opposition here IMO

Hibberd to start for me. Would like 25-30 minutes of Youngs after.

I don't think there is much to draw between the 2 of them Ruby. Hooker is probably the only position I would decide with a coin toss, the rest are pretty clear cut (for me anyway).

Re: The 606v2 Lions Selection Hooker
Youngs on the bench would create some dynamism to come off it. If you have Vuni on that bench coming off too there is some serious impact.
If you have Youngs and Vuni on from the start that may be a lot of dynamism in the loose without dominating the tight exchanges where we should be going to town on Australia.
I'd say these duos would be the best options:
Vuni-Hibbard
Corbs-Youngs

Jeez this one is much closer than I was thinking it would be. All the Sky panelists said Hibbard, didn't realise the fans were so divided on this one

Youngs based on the tour so far. But there is still time for the other 2 to show their ability.

Same logic as I used on the TH prop thread - start with the powerful guy and bring on the more dynamic one as the game opens up after 55-60. As such, Hibbard starts and Youngs comes on from the bench
So a starting front row of Corbs - Hibbard - Jones
replacements Mako - Youngs - Cole.

I am a great fan of Youngs but given that two hookers will get to play I would start with the more powerful Hibbard and replace with the more dynamic Youngs. Same logic with Corbs giving way to Mako and Jones to Cole.

I'm going to wait until after the weekend for this one
It is very close, if Young messes up his lineouts this weekend or Hibbard makes his presence felt off the bench then things will change.
