Adaptability
Who are the fighters who can change their game plan if they realise that their original plan is not working too well. In short who has a plan B
Going back a few years the obvious choice would be SR Leonard who decided to brawl against Hearns when he realised he was way behind on points and needed a KO to win. He got the KO.
Floyd Mayweather changed his approach in R5 when fighting Judah. A close fight up to that point until Floyd decided to pick up the pace and become more aggressive.
Saturday's non action showed that a certain boxer from the far east doesn't have the boxing intelligence to alter his game plan so no point in discussing him.
MAB opted to outbox Naz which threq Naz off his game plan and showed he did not have a plan B.
Anyone else?

Re: Adaptability
I thought Leonard's was the act of a desperate Man rather than a lucid plan.....
Ali vs Lyle...Ali trained for the rope a dope Lyle wouldn't buy it and Ali had to lead and chase and ended up beating a top class fighter....
Chavez instead of being the bull played the matador against Ramirez.....
Few fighters have the guts to try anything else you are right and come out of their comfort zone even if it isn't working.

Valero vs DeMarco
Valero showed some of his boxing skills that can be viewed in some of his sparring sessions for a change. Was really impressed as DeMarco was his toughest test to date IMO and come through with flying colours. Had a tall rangy style that could have caused problems for Valero had he just went in head first as usual.

Re: Adaptability
Bernard Hopkins. He never really changed his style mid fight it was more over a period of time to compensate for the loss of speed due to him being older than God. He doesn't put in the same workload as he used to less punches thrown now. He doesn't move as much and has developed his defence and jab to compensate for this.

Re: Adaptability
The most recent fighter that springs to mind is Carl Froch against Arthur Abraham. Everyone expected it to be an all-guns-blazing slugfest and instead Froch gave a boxing masterclass and dominated Abraham who himself had no Plan B. However he had all this worked out BEFORE the fight, not during it.
Haye showing he was able to box sensibly after he broke his hand on Valuev's huge head.

Re: Adaptability
Gamboa seems to be able to adapt during a fight. He likes the KO but will box and settle for the win if he can't get it.
I always liked how Lennox Lewis fought fight to fight. He could be explosive or box depending on the opponent. He had all the tools to adapt to beat another fighters style.
Joe Calzaghe is a great example as post Lacy his hands had become so brittle, it was amazing that he could still fight. He was forced to adapt because of the brittle hands and he did it very well.
