Leonard-Hagler right at the top of the list. How it was ever acclaimed as fight of the year by The Ring remains one of life's enduring mysteries. One rousing round, or at least half of a round (the ninth). Otherwise, more posturing and show minus substance than the House of Commons.

I quite like a nice stink box as it goes...
But anyway in regards to rubbish fights...Mayweather v De La Hoya very poor
Both fighters claming they would come out guns blazing and it was totally the opposite
The post fight interviews didnt help with Mayweather saying he was now retired and declaring himself the greatest ever

DLH Trinidad never really caught fire. Given how hyped it was and how excited I remember being about it it was never one I would look to revisit in a hurry.

Rigo vs Donaire, not massively hyped but it was a massive fight and boy did Rigo make it stink.

Neither hyped but...
Two of the worst fights I've ever seen - Matthew Barney v Tony Oakey, Matt Skelton v Michael Sprott.
Just bloody awful

I actually enjoyed Rigo-Donaire. Was just in awe of Rigo's brilliance, even if the fight wasn't text-book exciting.

Re: It Was A Right Stink Box
Interesting that you mention Skelton-Sprott, BlakkMamba. It was dreadful, you're right, but I'd say that Skelton-Williams I was even worse. I was delighted when Williams was given the nod in that one, as Skelton's performance was an absolute disgrace.
Mind you, as you've already said, you'll be hard pressed to find a Matt Skelton (or Danny Williams) fight that was 'hyped'!
On the face of it, Alexander-Bradley two or three years back should have been a good advert for boxing; both young, both undefeated, both being tipped for big things in the future and both holding a piece of the Light-Welterweight title, making it a big-time unification. But boy did they stink the place out.
Lewis-Holyfield I can be added, I suppose. Considering that the pair were splitting a pot of more than $31 million, you could maybe have expected a bit more! Lewis cruised when he could / should have been putting the exclamation point on his superiority, while Holyfield just never got going at all.
Frazier-Ali II. Goes to show that the pair of them didn't quite manage to produce a classic every time!

Bradley ever been in a good fight.........
Breland-Starling 2.........Shown by HBO and given the big build up but Starling clowned and Breland lacked the bottle to engage..
Both should have lost.......

Re: It Was A Right Stink Box
Ward froch was a bit sniffy, for the super 6 finale.
Not in a hurry to watch hagler Duran again either.

Re: It Was A Right Stink Box
Good shout on Froch vs Ward. Personally I'd throw in Froch v Abraham as well, the build up was Froch telling everyone that it will be an absolute war with 2 throwback gladiators throwing bombs blah blah blah and it turned out with Froch sticking to boxing rather than going to war like he claimed he would.....Froch v Dirrell was a nightmare to watch
Re: It Was A Right Stink Box
Haskins vs broadhurst has to be one of the biggest stinkers iv ever seen
Re: It Was A Right Stink Box
Lewis vs Akinwande or whatever his name was. Barely even threw a punch the whole fight and Lewis never got out of first gear.

Can't agree with Mayweathe v ODLH.
To me it was a masterclass by money May. ODLH came at him and Floyd allowed him to push on the front foot but it was great to see how ODLH could not land a decent punch

Ward vs Gatti III. Essentially a 9-1 demolition job with one hand. How was that fight of the year?

Really onetwo? A masterclass of not getting hit and.... Not doing much hitting yourself. I'd say it was one of floyd's least impressive performances. He won the fight, but as much from Oscar gassing as any masterclass. Overly cautious against an old man, the fight was roughly even on most cards coming into the last few rounds.

Remember reading an interview with Matt Barney where he states his admiration of Sven Ottke.
Explains quite a lot - his 'fight' with MacIntosh was car crash stuff...

More recently Bellew v Chilemba I and II were pretty drab affairs that made me want to watch the Mr and Mrs show just for some violence.

Can't agree with that, personally I thought Leonard/Hagler was a terrific fight.

Re: It Was A Right Stink Box
I enjoyed the first williams vs skelton fight. Skelton was vert dirty but tried everything to win. I had a lot of respect for the man after that. The second fight was hilarious, with Williams coming in huge for another physical fight and Skelton boxed instead!!88Chris05 wrote:Interesting that you mention Skelton-Sprott, BlakkMamba. Some of Eubanks later fights weren't much cop. He had lost alot of his hunger after what happened with Watson and seemed to go through the motions.
