Open qualifying
Big day today 24th june for final international quali at sunningdale 36 holes long day .Some relatively big names will be dropping out today.
Also the start of regional qualifying for hundreds of other hopefuls.Looking through the names locally there are plenty of amateurs and club pros who are likely to get a very rude awakening but its the magic of the open I guess. My friend is on the bag for his son at Luffenham Heath, good luck

Re: Open qualifying
Tom Lewis doing what he's been doing the last two tournaments, i.e. starting like a bullet, but I'm worried about his second round...
Currently Tom's leading at 5-under after 15 holes, while Aguilar is... +31 after 10 holes
Leader in the clubhouse so far is Frenchman Alexandre Kaleka (69)

I believe he probably just walked off after 5 holes... if you look at his card he 's getting only 10's after the first 5 holes...

Our man shot 73 at Luffenham 4th at the minute long wait to see if that will be enough.

I see Jimmy Bullard, former Fulham, Hull & Wigan footballer, is trying to get through Regional Qualifying today at The London.
Lee Bowyer & Garry O'Neill tried last year. Wonder if there are any other footballers playing in Open Qualifying this year?

Re: Open qualifying
Final qualifying for the Open is held on links courses - Gullane, North Berwick, Musselburgh and Dunbar this year.
I see 22 players withdrew from the final International Qualifying. I think it's disgraceful that these guys can't be bothered to show up or play a few holes and walk off. 22 other guys have been denied a chance to qualify.
If I was Peter Dawson, none of these guys would be entered in the Open Championship again.

What the hell has happened to Nick Dougherty? Propping up the field (alongside Soren Hansen) at +15, you've got to admire his optimism in playing I suppose but surely he needs to get his game back before attempting to play in majors?

Play-Off for Ross Fisher, Drysdale, Goya and Canizares then?
For just one spot?? (Sure I'd seen there were to be ten slots earlier in the day.)
Nice to see Alvaro get through, and another statement by Koepka.

Re: Open qualifying
My friends son has got through at Luffenham plus another local amateur.Been in Portugal over the winter and did pretty well his dads cheque book must be straining a bit now.Back 10 years we used to go to their house on Saturday evening for a barbeque and the lad was hitting balls into a net 10 years old non stop not a blade of grass left on the lawn and about 10.30 his mum would call him in because
it was bedtime.I cannot stress how many shots this lad has hit long way to go but great effort.
To me it gives a glimpse of what sort of all round effort is required

No doubt dyna, and good luck to him.
Bad luck for Ross Fisher, Drysdale and Canizares though, as Goya qualifies. Another disappointment for Fish in a year full of them, some of course self-inflicted.

Been at the regional qualifying at Remedy Oak today. Two scores under par -3 and -1. Playoff among +3 scores for final place. Excellent day. Saw some great ball striking but think greens did for a lot of people, 3 putts all over the place. 3 ams made it through.

Only made it to 44th reserve - but on the same score as one who qualified automatically. Play off loss perhaps?dynamark wrote: boxers son Conteh?

As good a course as it undoubtedly is George I'm afraid Musselburgh isn't a links course, it's as parkland as they come; another example is when the open's at St Andrews they sometimes use Ladybank for final qualifying, again far from a links course.
And really, if they know they're not going to qualify then why not walk off? They don't get paid for playing in it and they're not denying anyone a qualifying chance as the entry for this is done on world rankings so if they're good enough they've earned the right to withdraw if they know they're not gonna make it.

Re: Open qualifying
I'll never agree that walking off is the right thing to do, but I suppose it's better than not showing up at all.
If it's based on world rankings then not showing up is still depriving someone of a chance to qualify.

Indeed, Up until 2010, they used Scotscraig and Ladybank for Qualifying when at St.Andrews, while Carnoustie used Downfield. None of which are Links courses.

Someone was deserted by his two playing partners in the qualifying thing yesterday. They just disappeared, leaving him to consult with a rules guy who had to break up the three ahead (who were all doing well) with one of them dropping back to partner the guy who was alone. Maximum disruption all round.
That kind of thing is just pure selfishness. I don't think anyone ever has the 'right' to withdraw. There is no right to withdraw. If you enter it, you should play, and if you hit off the first you should certainly finish your round.

Got to agree with George easy way to sanction that would be to exclude anyone who walked without a medical reason from next years open.Have to say also that some of them are kidding themselves by entering in the first place.

Dunbar - great course on a really narrow piece of land along the coast. Nightmare for anyone with a slice. Front 9 heading out has a wall OOB down the right side, back 9 coming home you have the sea all the way down the right hand side. There are 4 holes (1-3 and 18) on the land side of the wall which don't feel very linksy, but then the remainder is right on the coast.
It's not the longest course so I would imagine pretty low scoring from the pro's (unless the weather is a shocker). Good luck with qualifying!

Dunbar is pretty tough, especially in the wind. I'd say it's the hardest of the qualifying courses.

Pity, I was hoping to stop off and watch the climax at one of the courses on my way home tonight.

Plenty of very good 9 holers, turned into absolute toilets. St.Michaels near St.Andrews used to be an excellent 9 holers, they got rid of a few of the old holes to make a new 18 holer and now the course has about 5 good holes. Shame.

It says that there are three places available from Local Final Qualifying. Is that from each course, or overall?

Re: Open qualifying
3 from each course, yes.
Things starting to look a little clearer, a couple of amateurs looking good at Dunbar and North Berwick, and Kent's own Steve Tiley lapping the field at Musselburgh... fourth time through local qualifying for him, but 2010 his only cut made so far, when he was on the first page of the leaderboard for most of the first two days.

Monty won't be there. I can't help, but feel that he should have either just stuck with the Champions Tour events OR missed the Senior Players Championship and concentrated on trying to qualifying for the Open.
