England Embarrassed at U20 World Cup

I haven't seen the game, but England have drawn 2-2 with Iraq in their first group game. This was despite England being 2-0 up after 74 minutes. Next game is on Wednesday against Chile.

I watched it! England played well for the first 70 odd mins til they give away a soft penalty!

Yesterday, England fell behind to Chile before recovering to draw 1-1. Now England must beat Egypt on Saturday to have any hope of progression.

Iraq, Chile and Egypt, real power houses of world football. So the young talent of England is not that great at the moment. I guess kids playing video games at home mean there is no street football and no hunger. If the kids in these so-called third world countries have it, then the future is not so bright.

It's not video games that have been the core reason for the embarrassment that the youth game has become. For me its down to the very way in which the children have been developed for the past 20 years in this country.
Theres far too many coaches with completely the wrong development system. I've stood at the sidelines watching my 7 year old son turn up at training at 6pm, its been 30 minutes at times before he's even touched a football, the time spent running between places playing bulldog etc before finally standing in a long queue to take a penalty and getting back in the queue. After that then the kids get to play a game where its split into two sides of how many kids turn up, sometimes 9 a side where its survival of the fittest as the ball pings about in what looks to the casual observer a cross between pinball and a rugby scrum.
Until at the very outset the way children are taught to control a football then the game in this country will be in the dark ages.

Maybe the greatest sporting nation at sports one has to sit down to participate (cycling and rowing). But I think they lag behind on many other sports.

To be fair it was nothing like the embarassment that was the U21 tournament. Saw the 3 games, England were dominant for large patches in all three, probably should have won all of them. Nothing wrong with their ability on the ball, it was just the finishing that let them down. Far more promising than what was seen from U21's.

Since when were darts and snooker sport?? Boxing is represented as is football. Rugby added next time doubt the UK could pick up a medal there though. Cricket questionable as well. Add NFL, ice hockey, baseball, softball and whatever sports the chineesse have as well of you want to add those. Either way the UK ain't the greatest sporting nation...

They are sports though like it or not.

The USA are better than England at (not including Olympic sports) American football, baseball, basketball, NASCAR, IndyCar, pool, golf.....

I watched a few of the games and the problems I saw was, too much Steven Gerrard type football. ie pass is square once or twice, lose patience, try a 'Hollywood ball' and give possession away.

Another problem was a lack of movement in spaces to receive the ball. Player A would pass the ball then just run forward whether it was into space or not.

We can pass the ball. We teach pass at kids level and they can be really good at it around cones. The trouble is we don't teach them how to use it in games. We don't teach kids movement or tactical awareness.
